(object) (embed)My brother’s friend from school, CJ Boyd, left their philosophy program just shy of a Ph.D to pursue music full time. He’s been on the road for the last two years playing both his solo work and as a member of of the CJ Boyd Sexxtet, which explores the connection between music and sexuality.
Using a bass, a loop, a harmonica, and his voice, I was mesmerized by the layered, rich sounds CJ creates. His music has been described:
Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica drones and constant improvisational exploration. Deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone. While certainly following in the footstep of great bassists like Mingus and Meyer, Boyd’s aesthetic sensibility also seeks to wed the minimalism of Reich and Riley with what might be called the maximalism of Beethoven’s chamber music. Add some Moondog, Authur Russell, Godspeed, Eluvium. But with the improvisational prowess culled from jazz. Not a “bassplayer” in the usual sense of the word. But something refreshing and impressive—with fingers that only know how to dance to the deepest tunes.
CJ was a nice reminder that something invaluable may be gained by leaving the rat race behind for a while and letting the instinctual desire to create and explore unfold. You can stream or download his albums (much better listening quality) here.

The Let’s Colour project’s idea is to bring color to gray community spaces around the world in an effort to encourage the people in those areas. Adam Berg made it to Jodhpur, India (as well as London, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro) and put together a beautiful look at this inspiring project.
