Thanks! My thoughts exactly. Right now, I'm reminded of the hell it is to have a teenager.

Rehashing and saying. "I've seen worse." doesn't really help. I am trying to share less because I am tired of working in an oversharing area.

Some days I'm just so happy to go hide.

I have learned that the more people in power in any group make references to being a 'family' in some way....my inner brat mutters "I already have a dysfunctional one and have made my own healthier one...I don't need another family!!"
This seems to give everyone the idea to just feel way too much at home at the office, with all the oversharing and cathartic conversations and power/control dynamics that take place in a group of people who are not sure of their roles......
and plays out in the work with clients, too.

I enjoy your posts, Rehab RN.

Congrats on the certification renewal! I've never done one of them, but I know they are hard work...your patients and coworkers are lucky to have a nurse who makes the effort!
I know what you mean about politics at work....adding more drama to a workplace, especially in health care, is never a good idea!

LOL! I agree. The coworkers were the problem in this meeting.

I really got tired of how they kept up the "we're victims" attitude.

Drives me nuts, but not my circus, and not my monkeys.

Used to work at a place that had such boundary-less and insensitive management that I decided that the senior leadership team was actually the love child(ren) of the Monty Python cast and the characters from Dilbert.
Death by meeting....along with death by endless cell phone sounds....the modern equivalent of being pecked to death by birds!

I think the biggest reason why nurses work while sick is that they feel guilty, knowing that the facility, and their coworkers, might have to work short-shifted. I know that's always a factor for me when I have to decide.

My hubby got his hearing aides about 6 months ago - a great improvement! there is some adjustment, and his hearing in a very open place such as a large museum gallery, or in a crowded place like a cafeteria is different than 'normal' hearing. But now he can hear everything that goes on around him. The bluetooth to phone feature is great - he can listen to music and no one knows it - as long as he doesn't sing along!

No thanks on the ham. I'm not a fan. Just an extra serving of anything Cadbury. Just for today they contain no calories.

It is really scary. Had an interesting conversation with one of our chiropractors today.

Insurance is loathe to prescribe PT or chiro because there are few randomized control trials. Wonder why that happens? Probably because many RCTs are funded by drug companies to sell drugs.

It's a vicious cycle that popping a pill won't solve for everyone. In fact, it could make things worse.

I'm going to be curious about the new CDC guidelines. I've noticed a very high upswing in opioids recently, and even when I talked to my coworkers about the new guidelines, they're not so hopeful.

All nurses are teachers, patient advocates, and tend to psychosocial needs along with physical ones. Learned this in nursing school over 30 years ago, and still try to practice by it. Comprehensive health care is an interdisciplinary team effort, ideally.

Thank you for your insight! I work in a skilled nursing facility, and it is easy to remember that things aren't permanent. Especially when it comes to patients.

Update: I never could get into American Smoke, so I returned it. Lights and Sirens is definitely a book you want to read.

Gotta reorder the Emperor of All Maladies because it got sent back.

Enjoy!

It ought to be mandatory reading for everyone in healthcare - well, maybe not the pedi and obstetric folks. But otherwise, the whole idea of considering costs and benefits of treatments at all ages and in all settings makes a lot of sense. We need to get past the idea of lots of costly care for everyone, always. It is not sustainable.

Oh my...seeing AWOL coworkers would raise my BP considerably!! Commitment to quality care....gets so much 'air time' but so little 'real time implementation' these days.
Glad you got a good family photo this year..it's a challenge, isn't it?
Sharing office space and adjusting to new space, etc. does bring out the nursery school level of cooperation in some folks.
Take care, rehab RN.

Oh, my! I feel old and wonder what they are teaching in nursing school these days!!
The patients end up suffering, and not getting maximum benefit from the access to rehab services (often limited by number of days, rate of progress, etc...) It's not just about treating pain, it's about helping patient make maximum progress and being an advocate to eliminate barriers, not to add to them.
