New motor vehicle sales data for Canada and the provinces are now available for November.

Retail sales in Canada totalled $153.1 billion in the third quarter, up 7.2% from the third quarter of 2016. Higher sales were recorded in 14 of 16 commodity groupings.

Retail sales rose 1.5% to $49.9 billion in October. Higher sales at new car dealers were the main contributor to the gain. Excluding sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, retail sales increased 0.8%.



Wholesale trade, October 2017

Wholesale sales increased 1.5% to $63.0 billion in October, more than offsetting the 1.1% decline in September. Gains were reported in six of seven subsectors, together representing 81% of total wholesale sales.



Annual wholesale trade, 2016

The operating revenue of Canadian wholesalers declined 1.4% in 2016 compared with 2015, dropping further below the $1.0 trillion mark reached in 2014. The overall drop was partly caused by a price-induced decline in the petroleum products subsector, as all other subsectors saw increases in revenues. Excluding petroleum, operating revenues rose 3.1% compared with 2015.

Retail sales edged up 0.1% to $49.1 billion in September. Higher sales at gasoline stations, particularly due to higher prices, were the main contributor to the gain. Excluding sales in this subsector, retail sales declined 0.2%.

Following two months of increases, wholesale sales declined 1.2% to $62.0 billion in September, the second decline of 2017.

The Wholesale Services Price Index (WSPI) rose 1.9% in the second quarter, with four of the eight subsectors posting margin gains.

The Retail Services Price Index (RSPI) edged up 0.2% in the second quarter, following a 1.3% increase in the first quarter. The growth was mainly attributable to higher margins at gasoline stations.
