Operating revenue for the travel arrangement and reservation services industry group increased 3.2% from 2015 to $13.2 billion in 2016.

Tourism spending in Canada rose 1.5% in the third quarter, the same rate as in the second quarter. The increase was driven by tourism spending by Canadians at home, as spending by international visitors in Canada declined.

Characteristics of international overnight travellers, second quarter 2017

Against a backdrop of celebrations for Canada's 150th and Montréal's 375th anniversaries, international travellers made 5.5 million overnight trips to Canada in the second quarter, up 7.6% compared with the second quarter of 2016. Growth was led by a 13.4% increase in overnight trips by residents of countries other than the United States, while the number of overnight trips by US residents rose 5.2%. Tourism spending in Canada by these international travellers totalled $5.5 billion.

The number of US travellers to Canada remained above the 2.0-million mark in September, little changed (-0.3%) from August after accounting for normal seasonal variation. This was still a 1.5% increase compared with the same month last year, and the highest number of US travellers to Canada in September in 10 years.

The number of overnight travellers to Canada rose in 2016 to its highest level since 2002. Travellers from abroad made 19.8 million overnight trips to Canada in 2016, spending $19.6 billion. This was 11.0% more overnight trips than 2015.

Just over 2 million US residents visited Canada in August as Canada 150 celebrations continued, 0.8% more than in July and a 3.9% increase compared with the same month in 2016. Over the first eight months of 2017, the number of US residents travelling to Canada was up 1.5% compared with the same period last year.

Travel Survey of Residents of Canada, first quarter 2017

The number of domestic trips increased 0.2% from the first quarter of 2016 to 66.9 million in the first quarter. Total expenditures for those trips fell 2.1% to $9.5 billion. The number of same day trips increased 1.6%, while the number of overnight trips fell 2.6%.
