This is Curtis. This is where Curtis lives, Bankhead Avenue abandoned bridge, Atlanta Georgia, USA. I spoke with Curtis for a few minutes before i photographed him. He had a surprisingly positive attitude despite being destitute. He told me being homeless wasn’t easy but if there were a good place to live, this was it. The bridge provided him solid housing, a tropical climate in a remote location, and nice tourists coming by with cameras and taking pictures of him. With food nearby, and an incredible view of the city, he seemed fairly content with his situation. We judge and shame people for living like this, but Curtis has done a good job turning a bad situation into something he can call his own. If there was a lesson in all of this, its that perspective and a positive attitude can get you though anything.

Factoid: This bridge, if I recall correctly, could be one route for a streetcar expansion and Beltline transit connection.

For this week’s CL cover story, I looked at Atlanta becoming the latest battleground in the war between the taxi industry and Uber and Lyft. Each side has hired a lobbyist and started quietly working to protect their interests. Things could get heated.

There seems to be a bit of confusion about MARTA’s “Pitch It In” anti-litter campaign. Apparently riders don’t know where they are supposed to pitch their bottles. In the stairwell? On a water pipe? On the tracks? On the roof? Or was it on top of the Breeze Card machines?

And notice that MARTA riders enjoy many brands of terrible beer: Miller Lite, Bud Light, and of course, Natty Ice.

At the end of every legislative session, Creative Loafing hands out the “Golden Sleaze Awards.” The faux honors are given to state lawmakers who proposed the worst ideas during the 40-day session. Some pols, such as state Rep. Earl Ehrhart, R-Powder Springs, consider the awards a badge of honor. We gave him a shout-out for trying to expand a scholarship program that allows state money to find its way to private schools. You might have read about it in the New York Times.

“Do people still walk in off the street with their stories and problems? I loved that about ag-town papers.‬ A guy would bring in a pumpkin that looked like Mickey Mouse, somebody would drop off 50 pages of typewritten pages about the Vatican poisoning the fluoride or whatever, an old lady would bring in the obit for her husband and spend two hours telling funny stories about World War II, etc. And the angry people would come in, and we’d always send them straight to the publisher’s office: “Oh yes, he looks FORWARD to talking to you about why the paper backed your lifelong enemy for the town manager vacancy.””

- Ken Layne talks with a journalist who went from newspapers to Patch and back to newspapers.

Destruction of the 7th Street apartment building designed by Neel Reid is underway in Midtown. Sad day for fans of old, elegant structures that don’t always provided the desired returns.

Well, that was fast.
