I Met the Lesbian Love of My Life on Tumblr:

Happy Lesbian Visibility Day, Tumblr!

Here’s a beautiful little piece to warm your hearts.

Let’s make some charts

Thu, 26 Apr 2018 11:22:59 -0400

#ChartDay is here, Tumblr! While U.S. Representative Mark Takano (@repmarktakano) is hosting a day-long conference with panels on the history and future of charts, and how infographics can help combat fake news, we’re celebrating by showing off the best of your homegrown charts on this beautiful Explore page

Didn’t make a chart? Feeling left out? Wondering if it’s too late for you? Nah, buddies. It’s not at all too late for you. Here’s how you can make some big, beautiful charts of your own.

Tap that photo post

You’ll recognize it by it’s heavily-coded label: “Photo.”

Choose the photo of your liking

A hot tip for a successful chart: do not choose a photo you hate.

Gently—lovingly—tap that sticker face

Look at that face. Just happy to be here, waiting to be lovingly tapped.

Place your charts

They’re in the app right now, and we put them there just for you (and everyone else on Tumblr).

Grow strong with chart-induced power

Throw some more stickers on there, or don’t. Slap some text on there, or not. We’re not here to tell you what your chart should be, we’re just here to provide a little guidance.

Now go on, pals. Show us what you’re made of. Tag ‘em #ChartDay so we know where to find them.

Please rise for the honorable Week in Review

thefandometrics: Guilty!…of doing well (K-Pop) NCT 2018 debuts at No. 7 thanks to their new performance MV, Black on Black. (Music) Beyoncé maintains her spot at No. 2. All hail Beyoncé. (Web Stuff) It’s an early check-in for Hazbin Hotel (No. 19), a new animated web series from Vivienne Medrano. (Celebs) John Mulaney leaps up seven spots to No. 7 after hosting a killer SNL. What’s new, pussycat? (TV) The 100, now in its fifth season, pops in at No. 16. Not guilty!…of doing well (Video Games) Hiveswap takes a miserable dive sixteen spots down to No. 20. Did the entire fandom go on vacation last week? (K-Pop) Twice falls six spots down to No. 9. Where you at, Once? (Movies) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was having (another) moment, but that has seemed to pass. The 2017 sequel has fallen six spots to No. 16. (Anime & Manga) This Fairy Tail has turned grim as it plummets to No. 19. (Ships) Stucky (the Marvel universe’s Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes) gets stuck at No. 18. That sucks. [...]

Oh, have we got something in store for the beautiful, data-loving nerds of Tumblr.

In collaboration with the Society for News Design and the U.S. Congressman Mark Takano (@repmarktakano) of California’s 41st District, we are proud to announce the existence of the first annual International Chart Day.

On Thursday, April 26, we’re asking you to celebrate the power of facts—the truth behind numbers. This isn’t just a holiday to celebrate D&D-inspired alignment charts (though they should be celebrated) and Math Lady (you knew what it is before you clicked, didn’t you?). This is about combating untrue stories. This is about celebrating the ability to extract and use pure information instead of relying on questionable secondary sources. This is about the unfortunate and grating fight against “fake news.”

Here’s how you can celebrate

We’ve dropped a limited-edition sticker pack so you can make your own charts without ever leaving the Tumblr app. You can make make whatever chart your brain or heart desires. Post ‘em, tag ‘em #ChartDay, and we’ll throw the best ones up on a brand new curated Explore page starting April 26.

Get weird. Or get serious. Or do something silly. There are no rules here. You shouldn’t feel limited to a complex graphs representing a complicated issue. Try quantifying the emotional, like @coolnessgraphed, who lives up to their name by graphing the coolness of hundreds of different things. Nice.

Need some more #ChartDay-inspo?

  • Floor Charts (@floorcharts) curates some of the most visually-appealing government charts that have ever crossed the U.S. House and Senate floors.

  • Chart-like Charts (@chartlikecharts) really needs no explanation outside of their username. That’s good branding, @chartlikecharts.

  • I Got Charts (@igotcharts) gets a little more serious than the others on the list. The babies are comprehensive

Okay, that’s it. See you on April 26. No need to RSVP. Dress code: your finest charts.

thefandometrics: Good times (K-Pop) Twice catapults twelve spots up the list to No. 3 after the release of What is Love? (Music) Beyoncé (No. 2) kept us up until the early morning hours with her Coachella performance, and we’d do it all over again. (Web Stuff) Thomas Sanders (No. 4) is back, friends. (Celebs) Our condolences to Adam Driver (No. 16), as evidently no one is talking about him. Psst. We’re shaking things up with our Music and K-Pop lists next week. Get ready. [...]

Mon, 16 Apr 2018 16:12:26 -0400

Congratulations! You’re a Webby nominee.

Tumblr is in the running to win a Webby (@webbys) for best community on the internet—and it’s all thanks to you. This is our eighth Community nomination. With your help, it can be our sixth win.

You’ve created some beautiful little communities here on Tumblr. You’re welcoming, you’re passionate, and if we must be honest, just the right amount of weird.

Where else on the internet are you going to find SKAM fans who translated each and every episode into English for those who don’t snakker norsk? What other platform is home to witchblr—the people who see the magic in everything, from emoji spells to crystal instructional guides. You are the community who got together for the first-ever virtual march—an online march for each and every person who was not able to physically attend a March For Our Lives rally. You are the people that host your own Tumblr prom every single year so no one feels left out. That’s because no one is left out here on Tumblr. Everyone is welcome.

You’re what makes Tumblr feel like home.

So go on and vote before the polls close this Thursday, April 19. We’re rooting for you.

Fri, 30 Mar 2018 13:14:31 -0400

It’s the Great Tumblr Bug Hunt: iOS Edition

Help find bugs lurking in the Tumblr iOS app before they get released to the bug-hating public.

Who’s eligible: The first 10,000 people to register. You need to be an iOS user, obviously. And you should use Tumblr every day—because bugs are natural sneaks. You won’t find them if you’re not using the app all the time.

How it works: You’ll get access to each new release about a week before it goes public. When you see a bug, take a screenshot and email it to to with a description of what happened and what you were doing at the time. (Some legal stuff: Any feedback that you send in is completely voluntarily but it will be exclusively owned by Tumblr so we can use it to make Tumblr better—even the mean stuff).

What you should know: You’ll be looking for bugs, which means there are bugs to look for. Don’t register if you’re expecting a bug-free experience. But if you get tired of bugs, you can leave the beta program at any time. Also, even though it’s a beta, it’s still the Tumblr app and the same Tumblr Terms of Service and Privacy Policy applies.

How to register: Join this Google group with your email. In a couple days you’ll get an email from TestFlight with instructions on how to install the beta.

What else you should know: Is in this FAQ.

We out here drippin’ in Week in Review.

Wed, 28 Mar 2018 15:12:50 -0400

“You have to use your platform for something good. You just have to, otherwise what’s the point? I would say the core message that I am trying to get through to everybody, is that whatever it is that you set your mind to, that you want to do, you can do it.—Shay Mitchell

This week is all about the ChangeMAKERS—women who have made a difference. Actress Shay Mitchell knows that being in the public eye makes her a great candidate to promote charities and non-profits. She’s worked with The Trevor Project (@thetrevorproject) which focuses on suicide prevention for LGBTQ youth, WE Charity for the education and development of children, and she has worked with organizations that donate to GLAAD (@glaad).

You can see our full set of interviews with Shay Mitchell over on MAKERS

@makerswomen is celebrating ChangeMAKERS for the last week of Women’s History Month. The women they’re profiling are those who have made an effort to make the world a better place. Go on and give ‘em a follow to see who else they highlight over the next few days.

We’re taking steps to protect against future interference in our political conversation by state-sponsored propaganda campaigns

Fri, 23 Mar 2018 10:32:57 -0400

Hi Tumblr,We’re all grappling with the influence that state-sponsored disinformation campaigns can have on our political conversations—and how wide-spread that interference turned out to be. So please take a moment to read this, think about it, and talk about it.Last fall, we uncovered 84 Tumblr accounts linked to the Russian government through the Internet Research Agency, or IRA. These accounts were being used as part of a disinformation campaign leading up to the 2016 U.S. election. After uncovering the activity, we notified law enforcement, terminated the accounts, and deleted their original posts. Behind the scenes, we worked with the Department of Justice, and the information we provided helped indict 13 people who worked for the IRA.Now that the investigations are done, we want to let you know how we’re going to help protect Tumblr in the future and what you can do to help. Here’s what we know about these accountsThe IRA employs more than 1,000 people who engage in electronic disinformation and propaganda campaigns around the world using phony social media accounts. Their goal is to sow division and discontent in the countries they target. What makes them so difficult to spot is that they’re not spambots. They’re real people who get trained and paid to spread propaganda. As far as we can tell, the IRA-linked accounts were only focused on spreading disinformation in the U.S., and they only posted organic content. We didn’t find any indication that they ran ads. Remember, the IRA and other state-sponsored disinformation campaigns play off our zero-sum politics. They want to drive a wedge between us so that we spend our time fighting with each other instead of building towards the future. We’ll be watching for signs of future activity, but the best defense is knowing how they operate and how to judge the content you see. What we’re doing in response to the interferenceFirst, we’ll be emailing anyone who liked, reblogged, replied to, or followed an IRA-linked account with the list of usernames they engaged with. Second, we’re going to start keeping a public record of usernames we’ve linked to the IRA or other state-sponsored disinformation campaigns. We’re committed to transparency and want you to know everything that we know. We’ve decided to leave up any reblog chains that might be on your Tumblrs—you can choose to leave them or delete them. We’re letting you decide because the reblog chains contain posts created by real Tumblr users, often challenging or debunking the false and incendiary claims in the IRA-linked original post. Removing those authentic posts without your consent would encroach on your free speech—and there have been enough disruptions to our conversations as it is. What we’re doing to stop future disinformation campaignsYou’ve probably read that U.S. intelligence officials expect foreign agents to try similar propaganda campaigns in the future. We’ll be monitoring Tumblr for signs of state-sponsored disinformation campaigns, and if we see anything we will…Terminate the accounts and remove their original posts.Notify you if we determine that you’ve liked, reblogged, replied to, or followed a propaganda account.Add the username to the public record.Alert law enforcement. There are also things you can do to help stop the spread of disinformation and propaganda.Be aware that people want to manipulate the conversation. Knowing that disinformation and propaganda accounts are out there makes it harder for them to operate. The News Literacy Project ha[...]
