The Right Way to Resist Trump - NYTimes.com

Sun, 20 Nov 2016 01:53:09 -0600

The Right Way to Resist Trump - NYTimes.com:

John Gruber says, “Twitter is full of people talking about Mike Pence getting booed by the audience at Hamilton last night. Now Trump himself is tweeting about it, focusing news media on the incident. Booing is not meaningful opposition. But it has served to distract from a legitimate scandal: Trump settling a fraud lawsuit for $25 million yesterday. That’s a legitimate scandal.

And the real news — what is happening this week that will have serious repercussions — is that the Trump administration is being filled with cronies, fools, and bigots.”

Happy Martin Luther King Day!

Don’t miss this incredible hour long performance of King’s letter to eight fellow clergymen. Both UT students at the time, Ya'Ke Smith directs Corey Jones performance of King’s letter. The letter starts at around the 4-minute mark.

Learn more about this awesome University of Texas production. Please share it with others so they can understand what today (and every day) should be about.

I’ll be watching this with my family every Martin Luther King day and probably other days of the year as well. Maybe March 14th or something.

How about you?

Notes

  • King’s letter should be taught alongside the declaration of independence - it’s as important. It’s an instruction manual on how to live through love, courage, dedication, and justice. And personally, this is the first time I can understand what being a real Christian (or any religious believer) meant (and maybe still does to some): protecting justice for all.

Two years ago, if you saw this sign and called the number, you would have found yourself in some kind of real life sci-fi art project game. On the cusp of 2016, Marlo just wants his lost drone back.

It has been a long time since I’ve heard a song for the first time and knew I’d want to listen to it over and over for a week. And knew deep inside that it would end up defining these days in my life for evermore. Here is that kind of song.

My 90s TV by Joey Cato. Non-stop TV from whatever 90′s year you choose.

Click keep reading below to hear all about a very serious theory* of mine. You don’t have to be sad anymore.

I have a very serious theory* about the world, humanity, and our shared reality. It has something to do with how we managed to divide and conquer ourselves. At some point, our universe dramatically swerved down the wrong and terrible tangent. A tangent that we continue to blindly occupy.

Here’s an observation that suggests we took a turn down a wrong path: Throughout history, in times of financial unrest, the lower and middle classes poked fun at the upper class. But now, in 2015, we struggle to pay our tv and internet bills, so we don’t miss the latest episode in the lives of the rich and not so famous. There’s no satire here. There’s envy, gossip, and the sense, no matter how artificial, that we are one of them. We’re not angry, we’re sedated - and unhappily. We’re alone. We’re scared.

But we all know that. We know where we are.

I’m more interested in how we got here.

My very serious theory* (you can call it “Tangential Dimensional: Anxiety/ Electromagnetic-wave Sedation and Desocialization Artifice Theory” if you want… or “Electric Anxiety SDA Tang**” for short) leads me to believe that our reality branched off into this tangent near the late 90s. And thanks to Joey Cato, I have an invaluable new research tool to pinpoint the exact moment we went off course.

*It’s serious.

**Tang is pronounced like (tang)erine. Not like the orange drink.

If my calculations are a bit off, we can search for clues in the 80s and 70s too:

pewresearch says, “Although there have been fewer executions in recent years than there were in the 1990s, 32 states still have the death penalty on their books, as does the federal government. And while public support has fallen, a majority of Americans still back the death penalty.”

Seven years ago, I discovered Chelsea Williams busking on Santa Monica’s third street promenade. This has remained one of my favorite songs…

Eight Days
Chelsea Williams

Your mother cried
when you told her you were Bernadette Peters
She was terrified
Called me up pleaded, won’t you come see her
And upon arriv-
al you ran outside to cartwheel down the drive
When they brought you home,
you tore off your clothes
and danced in the garden
singing hallelujah, oh
When they brought you home,
the poems you wrote
about a brave young girl
and the snake that swallowed her whole

coketalk says, “This got me. Damn it. I’m over here crying actual tears to these people’s reactions at seeing certain shades of red and green for the first time.

It just seems so magical and profound, to suddenly have the world pop with all the colors of the rainbow. What a gift. I want that. Hell, I need it. Not so much on the visual spectrum. On a spiritual one.”

This is an inaccurate description of colorblindness. Most colorblind people are color confused. They are not blind to color. Instead, certain hues look similar. I’ve worn these glasses and though they make colors more vivid, they do not show me colors I’ve never seen before.

Of course, the people in this film could have extreme cases, but that’s not mentioned in the film.

Serendipity 2.0

Sun, 19 Apr 2015 03:00:27 -0500

It used to be that if you continually saw or heard something over and over within a short time span - you called it serendipity or a sign.

For instance, you’d think it was a sign of some sort, if over the course of two days the following happened:

  • Stories about bees showed up in the news
  • you saw a photo of a bee hive in a museum
  • a stranger started talking to you about bees
  • a book about bees popped up on your Kindle screensaver
  • you logged into tumblr for the first time in months and the first post you saw said, “save the bees”
  • a swarm of bees took up residence on a stick in your neighbors yard and you had to call a bee removal service

Nowadays, what seems like serendipity is probably just data and recommendation algorithms trying to get us to buy more things.

Maybe this is part of the problem of this brave new world - magic has been replaced by consumerism. Or, at the very least, the magic can’t compete with all this greed-based noise.

What do you think?
