The McVlog

Profiles, interviews and a journey in cultural curiosity by Daniel McVicar

McVlog, LateNiteMash and the New Media

This is the home of the McVlog, an online experiment that led to the creation of LateNiteMash, a creative online video conversation and community.

This conversation took place in 2006-2007 and resulted in over one million views. is now archived at

I've decided to leave The McVlog site up with its comments. You may have trouble finding videos on this site, as we used Brightcove, and they have discontinued their public service to focus on serving high quality video for commercial clients. You may find The McVlog in all it's raw form on

My official site and blog is located at

Five Things

I've been tagged twice for the five things blog tag game by Rick Rey and Drew Olanoff.

Does that mean?
a) I must list ten things, and tag ten people.
b) The two tags meet here, and therefore I do not tag further.

Please leave your opinion in the comments. If there is tagging, then I will tag from my comments.

OK , here they are. Five things that you may not know about me.

1. My left foot is slightly larger than my right. That means, I suppose, I dress to my left, at least in regard to socks.
2. I was named the "Betty Crocker All American Family Leader of Tomorrow", by General Mills when I was a Senior in High School. Cooking was not involved.
3. I spend more quiet time than not.
4. I play saxophone (infrequently now, and worse than Bill Clinton)
5. I just read the biography of "Cod" by Mark Kulansky. With our oceans being completely fished out in forty years, it is more interesting than you may think.

The best place to find McVideo these days is on my site and a community for creative professionals at . You may still see the McVlog Archives here.

At the end of her journey across America, Amanda Congdon stopped by and we had a great talk, and an energizing dance. This is the interview...I thought that you would enjoy it.

Also John Furrier, CEO ofPodtech had grabbed me for a few questions at the Vloggies in November.

Amanda Congdon Interview

At the end of her journey across America, Amanda Congdon stopped by and we had a great talk, and an energizing dance. This is the interview...I thought that you would enjoy it.

Amanda Congdon is a great star that is emerging from the new media. She just announced a deal with HBO to develop a series, and has much more to come after her arrival in Los Angeles.

She is one reason that I started doing this, and it was a special pleasure and privilege to get to know her, and be part of her journey Amanda Across America.

Rocketboom and an Announcement

story links: Late Nite Mash | Rocketboom | Amanda Across America | Reggie Watts | W.O. Thompson | MagmaWaveEvery idea starts with inspiration. I created the McVlog because of all the great Internet video being produced. Here we profile Rocketboom, perhaps the online video leader. I caught up with host Joanne Colan and producer Andrew Michael fact, I took them to the airport after the Podcasting and Portable Media Expo. I rushed them there in my hybrid, just in time to conduct the interview. It was a fun and interesting drive, and I discovered Joanne almost became the voice of a navigation system. She knows L.A., so I turned off the navigation and let her tell me where to go. Oh, and she did.In the profile, I talk about Rocketboom, Joanne Colan and her title as "The Hottest Woman on the Planet", and the future of Rocketboom with Andrew. Of course, any story about Rocketboom would be incomplete without mentioning Amanda Congdon, who is now traveling across the United States in a Ford hybrid in Amanda Across America. We are starting our own journey here. I am announcing the next step in this online world: "The Late Nite Mash".“The Late Nite Mash” is “The Tonight Show” compressed and re-imagined for the Web. Three minutes a day, posted at noon in LA, the show is a happening; with interesting guests, new music, smart humor, and popular web videos, all presented with a hip after-hours sensibility. “The Late Nite Mash” has a community of viewer contributors submitting videos and music. The website,, is a social network and a show in itself, but the daily “Late Nite Mash” show sets the standard with celebrities and discoveries. The site is up and running in beta (aren't we all?), and the show will be in previews soon. Join in, the party is getting started. Make a profile and say hello. Also included in this McVlog package is the complete interview with Andrew and Joanne. Let it's after the promo.Oh, and guess which Wikipedia page is real?Daniel McVicarorDaniel McVicar[...]

Secret Identities

I have met the Scobleizer, a superhero in his own transparent way. And here in Hollywood, I met a young lady with her own secret identity.

In this McVlog I also reveal an identity from my past.

All this and a pillowfight.

Oh, and a shoutout to Steve Garfield. What is your secret identity?

One Big Vlogofamily

I appreciate everyone who has been in contact with me over the last week. Irina of GeekTV had noticed what she calls a vlogger crush. I wore a ZeFrank shirt when I interviewed Robert Scoble, and was surprised when Ze wore a McVicar Beer T-shirt during his show. I nodded back with a duckie from the happy meal on Monday.

(image) (image)

This is not a crush. We are men. Macho vlogging men. These are shoutouts.

I really appreciate it coming from Ze. He is the best. If you haven't seen his address to the TED conference, you should.

I've enjoyed being on "The Bold and the Beautiful" for many years, and the people there are like a family to me.

I jumped with both feet into the Blogosphere with The McVlog, and have found a great family and community. There are certain people I admire, certain shows that inspire me. Rocketboom is the platinum standard, with its 3 minutes of daily delight and compressed content. Ze Frank is blazingly bright, funny, and a true visionary. Amanda Congdon, a real rising star, is taking this form across platforms, and now that she is de-boomed she's taking us across the country in Amanda Across America. The first groups I profiled have turned out to be my friends, and their work is wonderful: The Jet Set Show, 88Slide and Noodlescar.

Steve and Zadi of The Jet Set Show are spinning off their RSS News puppets into RSSNews.TV. It must be true that "Hands Up Our Ass Make Us Feel Alive!", and you can see why when Ernesto, their sexy correspondent, interviews me. We did this without rehearsal, script, and in one take. It makes me laugh.

See you soon with a new McVlog.

Out to Lunch

story links: zefrank | Ben Myers | CoralPoetry | Dean Martin | Blogs of Note by Blogger | MagmaWave

I noticed a great deal of traffic this weekend, not on the roads, but on my blog. thanks to Blogger for making me a Blog of Note(do I get a plaque?) and to all who visited. It is time to step up my game.

But first, I want to take you all to lunch. Come on!

p.s. for some reason this blog was down for a couple of hours. It is back, and I will stay so that the terrorists don't win.

Robert Scoble: The Blogger King

story links: Robert Scoble | Jeff Pulver | Jeff Jarvis | zefrank | Google

From the Hollywood Hills to an undisclosed location in Silicon Valley, I tracked down the King of the Bloggers, Robert Scoble.

Robert is one of the most positive and delightful people that I have had the pleasure to know. I interviewed him for the McVlog, and also enjoyed his company over dinner. I also had the pleasure of meeting his lovely wife Maryam.

I can see why Robert has become such a force and voice in technology. He is candid, curious and has a certain kindness.

Although he should never be underestimated, for he will confront evil in his online persona "The Scobleizer".

I am looking forward to his video work coming soon. I would like to see where his curious mind takes us. And Robert, my vote for the name of your show is "The Scoble Show". 'Nuff said.

Here you can see our report, and also a more complete interview with Robert.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Rabbit Bites and Message to Hank

Buzz has been asking for a new McVlog, so here you are. Not industry buzz, although we are getting some of that here and here. No, the Buzz that was needing a McVlog fix was my friend Buzz Belmondo the Filipino entertainer now teamed with Carl Bradley, a former network executive. Sounds strange and funny, and it is.

I hope you all enjoy this McVlog, especially one bright young redheaded man in New York City.

We are gearing up for a daily show here this fall, and I will tell you more about that later. The McVlog will continue as my personal video communication.

Thanks to Robert Scoble and Amanda Congdon for the shoutouts this week.

Reactions and Rabbits

The McVlog has received many comments and reactions, and I thought I'd take the time to address some of the feedback I've collected.

We shot this at Joey's Place, a really cool recording studio dating back to 1936 across from Paramount Studios in Hollywood. I hung out with maestro Joey Altruda.

The McVlog has captured the attention of two funny bunny vlog satirists at (image) I've never gotten that much attention from Bunnies in all my visits to the Playboy Mansion. Oh, and here is a link for one of my favorite recipes: rabbit on a stick.

I will be traveling to New York this week, and look forward to staying in touch.

Thanks to Steve Garfield for the clip, and anyone else who chimed in.

Happy Birthday Millie

It's Millie Garfield' s Birthday, and I would like to join the voices in a big shout out to her. Happy Birthday Millie, you are amazing, and I am happy to be your friend.

I always loved a song "Millie Make Some Chili" by Billy Vera and the Beaters. Billy is an old friend, and also an avid viewer of "The Bold and the Beautiful" for almost twenty years. I asked him to sing a little for you.

He is a legend in the music business, complete with a number one song "At this Moment" and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Thanks Billy!

I hope that you have a Happy Birthday Millie. I know I was very happy to wish you one.

Craig Newmark and the Craigslist Foundation

This McVlog has a special correspondent piece in San Francisco. Craig Newmark invited me to his home to discuss The Craigslist Foundation, a non profit organization. I later visited the office of Darian Heyman, its executive director.

Comedian Pat Mellon wrote a song especially for this piece: "Ode to Craigslist". Thanks, Pat.

The Craigslist Foundation is holding a BootCamp for non profits August 19th.

For a great example of a non profit that could use some help check out Ze Frank's PSBI.

Blogher Part Two and some more bonus interviews

In part two of my report from BlogHer, I look at the growth of the conference, the changes coming on the web, and get a sense of community.

I have also included an extended interview with the delightful Zadi Diaz of .

Zadi Diaz interview

And Jenn and the Mommy Bloggers, don't worry. I will be putting up the FULL interview with you, not just the ball bits. I did take your threat seriously.

Special thanks to my team at MagmaWave, Spencer Bainbridge and Niko Rantala.

Late Late Show , Ferguson, McVicar and Andy Garcia

Watch the video

I got interrupted while I was editing the "Blogher Part Two" report to go and do an appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson".  This was my tenth appearance, and it airs tonight.

My old and dear friend Andy Garcia was also on the show , talking about his touching and wonderful film "The Lost City", now released on DVD.

I had shot some footage of Andy on Monday at an appearance of the Cineson All's a few seconds.

The McVlog will return tomorrow with "Blogher Part Two" and some more interviews.

Interview with Arianna Huffington at Blogher

Part Two of my report from Blogher is on its way. In the meantime, I am posting the interview with Arianna Huffington.

I have always loved powerful and beautiful women. Arianna Huffington is both. Her Huffington Post has provided a place on the web for direct and always interesting political discourse. Soon to come will be "Politics Aside", a section of the site where anything and everything can be discussed.

In this interview she also discusses being fearless, her new book, and the war in Israel and Lebanon.

BlogHer Part One

I attended the BlogHer conference over last weekend, and was absolutely impressed. It seems that so much is bubbling up from so many, that communities are forming and taking hold.

The Blogher Bunch is an example of the power and the growth of blogging and vlogging.

I came to listen, to learn and not interfere. However, I did get to visit with many impressive bloggers, including Arianna Huffington, Lisa Stone and Jory Des Jardins of Blogher.

In part one, I deal with my fears in being a man in a woman's blogger world. There will be more in part two. I am also posting interviews today with Lisa Stone and Jory des Jardins. I will have complete interviews posted with Arianna Huffington, Zadi Diaz, the Mommybloggers, and many others.

NewAssignment and Craig

Craig Newmark of Craigslist talks about his seed donation to , Jay Rosen's new adventure in a professional and citizen journalism hybrid.

I went to San Francisco to do a profile on the craigslist foundation, and Craig Newmark was kind enough to give me some time.

He spoke about and I wanted to post this report.

I shot it with two cameras, an HDSony and my laptop cam. I focused the HD on Craig, and the laptop on me. Unfortunately, I bumped the laptop, and the picture is not framed well. However, Craig looks great. After all the years on the soap opera, perhaps I am maturing by making everyone else look better.

He is so well spoken and caring, he will always look great.

To find out more about you may visit its website.

I did get over to the craigslist foundation in the afternoon and visited with Darian Heyman. I will bring that report in the future.

It's Noodlescar!

A profile of the delightful Orange County Blog Noodle Scar produced by the husband and wife team of Lan Bui and Bonny Pierzina.

You will be enchanted.

I am going up this weekend to interview a leader in the Web, and profile his foundation. You have all used his website, and won't always say what for. Leave me a comment and a guess.

In my continuing series "Meet the Vloggers" I talk with Noah Bonnett of 88slide. Thanks Noah, I love Jack Davis at Mad Magazine, but I learned to draw from Mort Drucker.

The Jet Set Show, Steve and Zadi's Wedding Night Video and Rocketboom

(object) (embed)

In this vlog I talk with Steve and Zadi from "The Jet Set Show". This children's show is their contribution to the new medium. Zadi and Steve also talk about Amanda Congdon and Andrew Baron, and their involvement in the show and the future.
I wanted to be kind and not deal with gossip, but the reality is that the Rocketboom blowup has brought more attention to this space in the media.
I am enjoying my visit in this space, and am hatching my own contribution to come soon. Tomorrow we should have ready the 88slide profile.

MSM meets the Vloggers

(object) (embed)

I am fascinated by the new wave of communication coming from vloggers. I went Saturday to a “Meet the Vloggers” night at the Apple Store in LA, and just finished my MCVlog 1. You will see more this week....I will profile 88slide, jetsetshow, and noodlescar. Also, there will be some interesting comments in the vlog tomorrow (if I can figure out the editing) from the creators of The Jet Set Show regarding the Rocketboom blowup. My thanks to , and . The MSM meets the vloggers.

Peace. Daniel
