CECID Version 1.00 (stable) Released

Sun, 07 Mar 2004 14:01:42 -0000

CECID (the CEnsorship CIrcumvention Device) is a PHP script that allows people to access pages anonymously that have been blocked by firewalls at work, school, or anywhere that restricts or monitors internet access. After a long beta period, CECID-PHP version 1.00 stable has been released, which adds an enormous amount of bugfixes and feature enhancements.

The project has advanced significantly since its last news posting (over 248 days ago! :), with decent banned word filtering (many, many bugs have been fixed), image support, proper link obfuscating (again more bugfixes), a much nicer user interface as well as a few other new privacy management features. You can download the latest copy of the script at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=84849 , or try one of the official mirrors listed at http://cecid.sourceforge.net/mirrors.php .

Version 1.00 of the script also includes support for the CECID Client, which should be released later this year. The client will provide full anonyminity via a HTTP proxy interface which routes requests through a peer-to-peer network based on the MorphMix protocol. The protocol is such that it is virtually impossible for anyone to work out the identity of any given node on the network. Data is also encrypted. Additionally, the HTTP proxy means that normal browsers, P2P clients that support HTTP proxies and any instant messaging software will be supported. You can see the current state of the client in CVS at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/cecid/CECID-CLIENT/ .

For more information, have a look at our website (http://cecid.sourceforge.net) and sign up for one or both of the mailing lists available. Documentation regarding the client will be released soon. Check the website for updates (notification will be sent to the mailing lists, too). The mailing lists are available at http://cecid.sourceforge.net/maillist.php .

CECID v0.01 alpha-testing released (First Release)

Fri, 04 Jul 2003 12:24:22 -0000

CECID is the CEnsorship Circumvention Device, a php script designed to anonymize http requests

and allow users behind restrictive firewalls to access blocked sites. Users enter a URL to

access, and CECID will download it and edit it on the fly to get it past content-filtering

software. The user can then view the page at their leisure.

This release of CECID is an alpha-testing release, ie. many features may not work at present.

The script will, however, access a requested page and edit it for banned words. Links do not

work at this stage.

We are aiming to build inter-script communication into CECID at some point in the future, so

that CECID scripts on servers around the world pool resources in order to maximise response

times, and thoroughly mask IP addresses. Additionally, we aim to build HTTPS, SOCKS, FTP and

eventually TELNET, NNTP, POP3 and SMTP into CECID to allow it to become a distributed

anonymizing network of scripts, running on servers around the world, for use with file-sharing

clients and email as well as general surfing.
