Whats next? RSS Feeds

Wed, 20 Aug 2003 18:17:18 -0000

After seeing the awesome power of RSS feeds, im rewriting the server portion to use them! I will have a SQL database catalog the articles, and provide them to the user that way. I am currently writing the backend for it. This should not be terribly difficult, hopefully done soon!

Current Work, Future Plans, OSS Presentation Today

Mon, 11 Aug 2003 16:28:25 -0000

Current Work
I have currently been revamping most of the program. When I started the program, I was basically just "hacking" at it (mainly because of my lack of Swing skills) Much of the code is sloppy, and needs to be rewritten. I have also started the menu'ing system.

Future Plans
As stated, over the summer break I very much want to rewrite most of the code. I will also change the functionality of the project. Initially I wanted the news to archived in a MySQL database, and then have the user access that information from the site. Currently, the user parses the website from the client side. This is wholly unacceptable, especially for slower connections. I also want all the previous headlines to be fully searchable. I am undecided what I will write the server side headline parser in. The parser does need to be rewritten, as it is quite buggy. These will be the initial goals of future development. I will also list some possible ideas for the program that may be implemented further down the road:
- Comments section shared by all users (Ex:
- More browser support (currently IE & netscape)
- Menu system, as well as printing capabilities etc
- Better threading system
- More configuration options

I do anticipate I will continue to develop this project. I want to be very fluent in Java, Swing, and JDBC before graduation (Spring 2003)

OSS Presentation
Today is also the presentation of the current development for the class.

The status bar now updates correctly. Also fixed a problem with the URL strings. Tried Javas integrated browser, but its REALLY terrible. So I will have to find a way to have it launch Mozilla. I will post Version 1.1 before the presentations in a week.
