V-Drive V1.0.0 Alpha Released

Mon, 30 Jun 2003 20:03:47 -0000

I am pleased to announce that V-Drive V1.0.0 Alpha has been officially released!

V-Drive is a small application that creates a virtual Floppy Disk/CD-RW data drive on your PC. The client the stores your data on any Perl/CGI capable webserver which has the small Perl/CGI server application script installed.

The combination of the client and server working together means that you can stop taking those carrying those floppies everwhere, access your data anytime, anywhere and make use of that 20mb of webspace your ISP gave you!

Two downloads are currently available the first know as Personal Edition contains the client application, the server application, all related source code and installation instructions, the second download Client Only contains only the client application Win32 executable.

V-Drive V1.0.0 Alpha to be released this weekend

Tue, 24 Jun 2003 11:12:02 -0000

V-Drive the open source virtual hard disk application will make public its first alpha release this weekend. At long last something to make use of the 20mb of webspace that your ISP gave you!

The application which is written entirely in Perl comes in two parts:-

The first (server), is a small CGI (Common Gateway Interface) application that sits on any webserver capable of serving Perl/CGI scripts and acts as the 'V-Drive File Server'.

The second (client) is a Perl/Tk application ( available as source or as a standalone executable ) that allows the user to remotely connect to the server and retrieve his/her files, which are then placed in a virtual disk drive on the client PC (ordinarily V:\). If any files on the client PC's virtual drive are updated, deleted or created then the client will upload the new information to the remote server where the data is updated accordingly.

With both the client and server working together the user has all the benefits of removable media but without the hassle of physical media, as the floppy disk, CD-RW, etc has been replaced by a completely virtual system.
