Here's Updated Mapping Vehicle Paves Way for Self-Driving Cars

04 Dec 2017 09:00 CDT

t may have been a while since we last we came across a Here 3D mapping vehicle, but that's not to say the company hasn't been using its cars lately. In fact, the Here True collection vehicle is now in its third revision, and I got to hop on one -- based on a Volkswagen Golf Variant 280 TSI Highline -- during Computex. The ride features much faster D-GPS tracking that no longer requires a half-hour calibration (to reach an accuracy of under one meter), along with a Velodyne LiDAR with an accuracy of better than 2cm (within a range of up to 70 meters) and four 16.2-megapixel MARS panoramic cameras. This set of gear is almost identical to what we've seen before, so the real highlight this time is the updated backend to support high-definition mapping. ...continued ...

Drone2Map for ArcGIS 1.3 Released

04 Dec 2017 09:00 CDT

Building an accurate geographic information systems requires significant technological assets. GIS is not just the pretty map on the screen -- many would argue that is the easy part. The key to it all, is data collection -- finding, storing and retrieving the data you want to render on your screen

Among the latest technologies to enter the GIS field is the drone or UAV, or unmanned aerial vehicle. Oddly, the drone itself is the least important piece of the tech. The key is the equipment it carries to take images, videos, topology and volume, among others....continued ...

Microsoft Previews Azure Location Based Services

04 Dec 2017 09:00 CDT

Microsoft this week previewed Azure Location Based Services, a new set of services with APIs for developers that lets applications tap geographical information. The APIs available with Azure Location Based Services provide access to five REST-based services, including Render, Routing, Search, Time Zones and Traffic. There's also a JavaScript control, called "Azure Map Control," that lets developers add their own data to vector- and raster-graphics map images. ...continued ...

DigitalGlobe Goes All-In on AWS

04 Dec 2017 09:00 CDT

Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) announced that DigitalGlobe has gone all-in on AWS and is leveraging AWS machine learning technologies to drive deeper insights and improved responsiveness for applications such as defense and intelligence, public safety, map making and analysis, environmental monitoring, oil and gas exploration, and navigation. DigitalGlobe, a business unit of Maxar Technologies, has migrated its entire 100-petabyte imagery library to AWS, which will give its customers instant access to its vast library of geospatial images, eliminating the need to wait for tapes and disks to be retrieved for content. DigitalGlobe, its sister division Radiant Solutions, and its partner ecosystem also leverage AWS’s frameworks and tools to build machine learning applications that allow their customers to incorporate valuable geospatial information extracted from commercial satellite imagery into their work flows, enabling decisions to be made with confidence. ...continued ...

UC Riverside Debuts New Center for Geospatial Sciences

04 Dec 2017 09:00 CDT

Human beings have been making maps for millennia, but the birth of geographic information systems (GIS) in the late 1960s ushered in an era of tech-infused cartography. Nowadays, GIS is a ubiquitous part of life; it even powers your mobile phone’s mapping app.

A growing academic discipline known as geographic information science, or GIScience, meanwhile, combines traditional GIS technology with statistical data to support scientific research and solve complex problems related to resource management, governmental policy, and industry, among other areas.

Launched in late September, the University of California, Riverside’s Center for Geospatial Sciences (CGS) is the campus’s new hub for GIScience research and spatial analysis. Overseen by Founding Director Sergio Rey, a professor of public policy, the center is stationed inside Room 159 of UCR’s Tomás Rivera Library and designed to be a university-wide resource....continued ...
