To be more specific, the only time the situation you describe occurs is when only one player is still left in an epoch. If people are playing well, that won't happen every epoch, and when it does, that player won't have much of the Ra track left to fill.

Oh. So it is.

...In the same font that was used elsewhere on the page to do non-rules clarifications of reasons you were doing what you were doing such as letting you know what the purpose of these 5 resources were, and that the campaign book contains narrative hooks for the adventures and you should pay attention to them since there might be hints at what you should be doing in them and flavour text on locations, and which most rulebooks reserve for examples.

I... Can see how I missed that... Objection withdrawn, and replaced by 'who the heck thought putting rules text in the same font as non-rules clarifications and advice was a good idea'...

Having played the original Pandemic, I would never have played this newer iteration. Reading that spoiler would have killed any consideration, though. Least original game aspect of the last decade.

I said to a friend of mine who is fan of the original Pandemic (and owns all its expansions): "listen, I know that you don't consider buying it because of the Legacy thing, but don't worry, you wouldn't have enjoyed it I think. I can't tell you why because it would be a spoiler ... but as I know you, you would be disappointed".

But he has pre-ordered Pandemic Iberia.

I played more than 1 round. Other players were guessing correctly, after a not excessive number of experiments so I'd say the difficulty setting was appropriate for that group. Perhaps I'd have enjoyed it more with a group more on my level.

Yep.
Ra was a game i finally managed to play for the first time this year too... and i really enjoyed it. The rules were easy enough to just dive right into our first round (all players were new to the game) and have fun with it. Loads of push your luck tension, loads of table talk, people getting really excited and swearing... but maybe it was more the group than the game that made it fun... not sure (the group was actually just a random group of folks at a game night i attended in munich...).

Three new plays for me this week.

Blaenau Ffestiniog, Engine #7 - 178
I like how this variant changes the event mechanism in a subtle way, but it has large implications for your planning. I completely messed up the first few turns and Scott got a jump on me. Pulled off a reasonable score despite rampant events.

Daffodil Line, Engine #7 - 200
Another outing for the lucky Ralph. Can't complain about this one. A stationary surveyor was keeping this from being a very good score.

Trans-Australia, Gulflander - 180 (invalid)
My first time playing this scenario. I made a critical rules error for the first 5 turns or so - I was taking an _extra_ water cube for each stockyard action. Ooops  I blame the vague rules sheet - lots of bgg lookups required for clarifications.

I'm sure that there were other errors made. I definitely played with the extra track section before Kalgoorlie, and I most probably played the extreme weather wrong. For example, I had Drought and Rain on the same turn :what:

I read in the comments that you have played the light version.

I sincerely hope you've already tried the full version, because the other is more like a learning toy rather than a game. Or even a version for the faint-hearted. (I hope designers stop doing this versions that destroy the spirit of their games, and drive away potential players. I'd probably find Arkwright simple and boring if I'd only play the lite version).

There will be more AP, and in the end you may not like it anyway, but believe me when I say, the full version is a different beast.

You also say: "I would likely choose to play 1830 over it in the long term, but would give it another go in the short."

As I said, I hope you've already done it.

I always try to squeeze both in my schedule!:)

Nope, didn't play the long version in the end.

I don't have a copy and didn't see anything in it that would change the fundamentals of the game in to something else, just made it 'more', so I didn't seek it out. In that sense my misgivings still apply; it wasn't amount of complexity that made me dislike it, just the nature of the mechanisms.

I hope you enjoy the it Sean, it is quite punishing (difficulty wise)!

I think the variant does allow for a far more balanced approach (between military and technology). However I think the only way you can be free to pursue a technology focused strategy and neglect military is to amend the solo rules so that the human player's last cube on the map cannot be eliminated (as per the multi player game).

Stephen, I took a quick look through your games, and I'd say it's probably too light to replace Patchwork for you. I find Patchwork to be thinky and strategic in the same way that, say, 7 Wonders: Duel is (even though the rules are much simpler), whereas Cottage Garden is more of an "I'm tired after dinner, let's just relax and play Cottage Garden" thing. You're mostly engaging the part of your brain that recognizes and rotates shapes, and you're not in direct competition with the other player very much. It feels closer to the weight of a light 2-player card game (e.g. Lost Cities) than to a lot of the medium-heavy 2-player strategy games that I see in your collection.

I noticed you've played Onirim -- Cottage Garden fills that same niche, especially when played solo at night: something simple, satisfying, and meditative. I love it for that, so -- for me at least -- it's still worth owning both. A definite yes if you like tile-laying games or jigsaw puzzles, a probably-not if you prefer direct competition or dislike light games. Just keep in mind you're in for a different experience than Patchwork.

Hope that helps! Feel free to ask specific questions if you have any.

Love this game. But I have found a few moments where I don't have anything to do. I have all my stuff, all the tiles are flipped, and it's just mathematically impossible to try a hit on Hitler. So you end up just doing CONSPIRE, CONSPIRE, etc... trying to get his Military Support down. But overall, that's a minor quibble.

I've seen the exact same thing happen. But you know what, last night, as I had my first multi-player game of this (or two games actually), the guys pointed it out to me that I had been playing the game slightly wrong. And now I'm wondering if it was that that led to the phenomenon you describe.

I find it hard to understand how I possibly could have got this wrong, but I did, namely, instead of drawing a new event card at the end of EACH conspirator's INDIVIDUAL turn, I had both of my conspirators take their actions back to back, and only then did I draw a new event. (Parallel to that mistake, I also had failed to check the deputies effect at the start of EACH conspirator's INDIVIDUAL turn.)

One can see how that mistake might lead to the situation you describe, namely, that the stages get drawn out, you're getting all the items revealed etc., because you're drawing new events at half of the tempo that you should be.

Now I'm really curious to play the game again, and correctly!

Quite willing to bid for expansions only. I already have the base game and some expansions, and I'm not especially looking for duplicates. As well, I may be a teensy bit over-extended in another auction.

I don't remember that listing. I love it how generous people can be on BGG, but I think the people that are most generous are not always getting enough in return. More appreciation or gifts are what a lot of those people deserve. You see them a lot in the PIFF chain.

It's a great feeling to look upon a freshly set up game; tiles laid out, cards distributed, everything organized and ready for the chaos about to be unleashed by some uncompromising dice.

Same here. Setup often takes 10 minutes, but I enjoy it. It is like part of the game already, as the setup reveals the scenario challenge and the possible strategies. Strangely satisfying when everything is ready to play.

I'm curious how Smash Monster Rampage is different from regular Rampage / Terror in Meeple City?

I'm not sure which version I played. It said Rampage on cover, was printed in 2013, but the cover didn't match any in the inventory. I can't compare it to other versions because I've not seen any. Sorry for my lack of knowledge/exposure.

Also, what did you think of the UK/PA expansion for TtR? We picked it up recently but haven't had a chance to crack it open.

Love the PA side. The shareholding adds a dynamic that appeals to me. Also I grew up in PA, so hearing about these old companies and places I've heard of growing up... a bonus.
Don't like the U.K./technology mechanics as much. It is a harsher game. And I've not been as successful with its dynamics.

incredibly ugly game.
Are there actually any good games that use drafting as their only/main mechanism? (i hated 7 Wonders but it made me apprechiate Sushi go more in retrospect).
drafting seems great as a mechanism for selecting player characters/special powers or that kind of stuff, but as a core mechanism to build a whole game around it seems a bit weak.

Treasure Hunter by Richard Garfield is an extremely good and fun game that uses card drafting as the main mechanism. I highly recommend it.

I almost picked it up on amazon the other day when they had it for 15 Euros... but then i thought i probably wouldn't ever play it... (and i have like 20 0r 30 unplayed games lying around anyway...)

I am sorry about that- wasn't thinking. Well, it happens early on so I'm sure there a ton more surprises for you in the months after. I guess. I've blocked the offending text out for those who are still to come. I guess I was even surprised someone read that far!

Having played the original Pandemic, I would never have played this newer iteration. Reading that spoiler would have killed any consideration, though. Least original game aspect of the last decade.

This reminds me of when people get all excited about plot/storytelling/characters in videogames and tell you how great the story of an RPG was... You play it and fell like "nope, this is shit, had this been a book i would have stopped reading after 20 pages and burnt the damn thing. Amateurish rubbish all the way. Your standards are too low!"

Really? you got excited about a couple of [o]zombies[/o] in 2016??? What is wrong with these people?
