Episode 272: 10th Year Anniversary of the Business Driven PMO

Mon, 11 Mar 2013 12:00:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "10th Year Anniversary of the Business Driven PMO," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Ten years ago, I gave my first presentation to the formal project management community. I was asked to present a PMO topic at a conference. The topic of my presentation was “The Business Driven PMO.” Over the last decade, I have said a lot. I have listened as well. Naturally, it is hard to boil down a decade of work in promoting this mindset into a two minute elevator pitch, but that is precisely what one must do.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What is the opposite of ADD?” Attention Deficit Disorder. You have no doubt heard the term. But what is the opposite of ADD? Would it be Attention Surplus Order or ASO? More and more children have or are developing ADD. School students from K-12 and on into college have ADD. New workers entering the workforce have ADD. And those workers that have been around for some time are now finding new ways to get and exhibit ADD. And, in the context of the workplace, what do we do with these ADD prone folks? We give them iPhones, we give them iPads, netbooks and laptops, social software, we let them office from home. Don’t get me wrong. All of this is has a place, a purpose, a value; but there is also a cost. And in the case of an ADD prone workplace, the cost is charged to and taken from the human element.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about a very simple tool or approach for managing a project that can be promoted throughout the business by way of a valued skill to have.

Episode 271: Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Epiloque

Sat, 09 Mar 2013 12:00:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Epiloque," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I am very happy to announce the recent release and availability of my new book, Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World. This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with you the Epiloque.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "PMO Manager Education." If you are a PMO manager, what educational plans do you have in mind? Do you have your PMP already? Are you thinking about getting an MBA? Though just about any PMO manager would be well served by a PMP and an MBA, by the way I don't view those as apples to apples development choices, rather just good things for a PMO manager to get, there are other options and alternatives for PMO manager education.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about how to tell the PMO manager that the PMO is failing.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Turn off the TV and read!" Which do you do more of, watch TV or read? If you are like most folks, you watch more TV than you read. The average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day. That's 28 hours a week, 2 months per year, and by the time you have retired you will have watched 10 years of TV.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst project communications experience? I'll go first." Without a doubt, my worst project communication experience stands tall above all other project communications difficulties I have had. This was some time back but it seemed as if it happened yesterday; a tell-tale sign that I have yet to let it go and yet to forgive the guilty.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not a project manager that aspires to a career in management should get a PMP or MBA.

Episode 263: Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Chapter 5 - Techniques for Establishing a PMO Mandate

Wed, 06 Mar 2013 12:45:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Chapter 5 - Techniques for Establishing a PMO Mandate," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I am very happy to announce the recent release and availability of my new book, Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World. This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with you Chapter 5 - Techniques for Establishing a PMO Mandate.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst PMO steering committee experience? I'll go first." Naturally, there are many kinds of bad experiences that can be had with PMO steering committees. My worst experience was in a PMO in which one of the PMO steering committee members simply refused to show up and participate in the PMO meetings. As you can imagine, it is very hard to conduct portfolio management discussions, prioritizations, and selections for new project opportunities not to mention make decisions about rescuing or terminating existing projects without the full participation of all those that needed to be present.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not a PMO be viewed as a permanent organization or an organization that at some point in time works itself out of a job.

Episode 262: Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Chapter 4 - Case Study Example of PMO Failure

Wed, 06 Mar 2013 12:00:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Chapter 4 - Case Study Example of PMO Failure," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I am very happy to announce the recent release and availability of my new book, Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World. This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with you Chapter 4 - Case Study Example of PMO Failure.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst international project management experience? I'll go first." Having worked quite a bit internationally, it is very hard to limit this question to just one answer. Having said that, there was one international project management experience that stands out. In my first few international project management experiences, I did not appreciate the need to be able to self-medicate and to understand what your body is telling you.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not two PMOs be combined into one.

This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with you Chapter 3 - Project Management Community Mind-set All Wrong.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst PPM tool experience? I'll go first." Perhaps one of my worst PPM tool experiences had very little to do with the actual tool itself, rather the management expectation of what the tool would do for them.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about introducing Agile to a PMO team that doesn't know and doesn't care about it.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst people management experience? I'll go first." Well, to start, I have made so many people management mistakes over the years that it is hard to pick the one that was the worst. But one of my first and fairly bad people management mistakes happened years ago in my first year of management.

Episode 259: Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Chapter 1 - Why PMOs Fail

Sat, 02 Mar 2013 12:00:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Business Driven PMO Success Stories, Chapter 1 - Why PMOs Fail," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I am very happy to announce the recent release and availability of my new book, Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World. This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with you Chapter 1 - Why PMOs Fail.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What was your worst PMO setup experience? I'll go first." Okay, I will admit it. I have made so many PMO mistakes over the last 30 years. And almost always, the errors of my ways could have been easily foreseen. But alas, it happens. Perhaps my first and most memorable PMO setup mistakes happened years ago. I had previously setup and managed a departmental PMO that was viewed as very helpful to the business. On account of that experience, I was named to head another departmental PMO. Without a great deal of planning, I rushed into a cookie-cutter PMO strategy that was similar to the one I had just had success with for a different business group. You know, "people, process, tools" and let's through in some training, mentoring, communicating and reporting. All of this served constituents and worked well before, but not this time.

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not to put project managers in a new PMO.

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World, Introduction to the Book," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. And in today's podcast, I would like to share with you the introduction to the book.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "PMO Purpose? Simple question, wrong answer." Today, I have a test for you. Actually a quiz. I am going to ask you a question. The question is a simple question, but it is also a question that 9 out of 10 project management professions, certified PMPs, get wrong. Here is the question, what is the purpose of a PMO?

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about which is more valuable to obtain, a PMP or an MBA.

I am very happy to have Bill Dow with us today. I have known Bill for quite some time and wanted to have him on the show to talk about his two books and perspectives on PMO Setup and Management.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "How to give a sincere apology." If you are like me, every now and then you find yourself in need of giving someone a sincere apology. Now, I know that there are folks that advocate you should never, ever apologize. I am not one of those folks, to the contrary.

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Now released, Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I am very happy to announce the release and availability of my new book, Business Driven PMO Success Stories - Across Industries and Around the World. This book is my third in the business driven PMO book series, published by J. Ross Publishing. I have dedicated this book to the hundreds of executives, PMO managers, and practitioners of project management that I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from over the last three decades. And I truly hope that I have succeeded in accurately portraying the wisdom that these folks have graciously shared with me.

Like anything you do on a repetitive basis, you naturally pick up and acquire tips and things to do or not do. So today I have ten tips to share with you to help with international business travel.

Episode 255: More about the PMOEdge Workshop Series, an Interview with Terry Doerscher

Wed, 09 Jan 2013 12:00:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "More about the PMOEdge Workshop Series, an Interview with Terry Doerscher," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. If you are a PMO manager and active in the PMO and PPM domain, then you probably already know Terry Doerscher. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Goals bad, four legs good – Part 2." In part 1 our last podcast memo, we talked about the idea advocated lately by many in the business management domain that goals are harmful. For example, because of a personal goal, there was bad teamwork or because of team goal, there was lack of individual initiative. You get the idea. Do you buy it?

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not project management is the same regardless of project.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Goals bad, four legs good – Part 1." Lately, it seems that where ever you turn within the business management domain, one after another expert (usually from Harvard Business School) has put out a paper on the harmful effects of goals. Usually the research findings suggest something like this, "The benefits of goal setting have long been over overstated and the harmful effects of having goals have been completely ignored. So, in conclusion let there be no more goals. Really?

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not a PMO is a benefit generating department or a service organization.

Episode 253: Agile Today, highlights of Dave Garrett's interview with Jim Highsmith

Thu, 08 Nov 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Agile Today, highlights of Dave Garrett's interview with Jim Highsmith," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Dave Garrett and Jim Highsmith need no introduction. Both giants in the industry, Dave created the largest online community of project management professionals now known as ProjectManagement.com, formerly known as gantthead. And Jim Highsmith, well if you don't know Jim Highsmith, you don't know agile. Jim is a coauthor of The Agile Alliance and a founding member of The Agile Alliance. Jim has authored many books and whitepapers and has consulted with IT organizations, product development organizations, and software companies around the world. Not long ago, Dave interviewed Jim to talk about Agile Today. This is such an excellent interview, that I wanted to highlight a few key questions and answers of the interview for you.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "What is the cloud?" Have you heard the term "Cloud" or "Cloud Computing?" Of course you have. But what exactly is it. And why is all of this referred to as a cloud? Is it because we are all no doubt going to get rained on? Well, not exactly, though some of that will no doubt happen. The term cloud computing comes from the practice of using drawings of stylized clouds to denote networks in diagrams of systems and the word cloud, or I should say drawing of a cloud, is used to represent the internet and this technique dates back to more than twenty years ago. The actual concept of the cloud dates back to the 1950s, where large mainframe computers became available and accessible through fixed function, green screen, cathode ray terminals or CRTs as they were called.

Episode 252: Don't Miss the 11/15 PowerSteering Webcast - Finding the PPM Sweet Spot

Fri, 02 Nov 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Don't Miss the 11/15 PowerSteering Webcast - Finding the PPM Sweet Spot," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. For years, Jay Hoskins, the Director of Solution Consulting, has given presentations on business driven approaches to project portfolio management as has Susan Go, who is one of the PowerSteering PPM subject matter experts. PowerSteering is one of those leading PPM providers that recognizes that for most organizations a PPM initiative is far more than merely implementing a tool.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Top 10 PowerPoint Presentation Tips." Many people may think that good presenters were just born that way or are naturals at it, but I have found that not to be the case. Like with any craft, being good takes planning and practice. And in the case of giving a good presentation, it can also take having a good command and repertoire of some of the common and effective tips and techniques. So today, we have amassed a list of tips, ten altogether, for giving PowerPoint presentations.

Episode 251: Daptiv Announces 2012 PMO Success Webinar Series

Mon, 24 Sep 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Daptiv Announces 2012 PMO Success Webinar Series," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. In the last few months, I have had the opportunity to work with and get to know the daptiv company a little better. Their marketing manager, Satish Kumar, reached out to us with an idea for a PMO Success Webinar Series. He invited me to join one of daptiv's PMO thought leaders, David Blomhorst, who heads the daptiv Services and Solutions team, to provide a series of four webinars aimed at helping people with their PMOs.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Sales people - don't confuse value with price discounts." Not long ago, in discussions with a service provider about renewal of services that were not performing, they used terms like value and ROI quite often and quite loosely. In fact, it was clear that we did not speak the same language with respect to what is an expense and what is a benefit. And from there, the discussions about payback, ROI, and other such things to determine whether or not such products and services were warranted for renewal became unnecessarily irritating.

Episode 250: Don't Miss the PM Solutions 2012 PMO of the Year Virtual Award Ceremony

Thu, 13 Sep 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Don't Miss the PM Solutions 2012 PMO of the Year Virtual Award Ceremony," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Today, it is my pleasure to share with you the announcement of PM Solutions of their 2012 PMO of the Year Virtual Award Ceremony. What is the PMO of the Year Award? Well, it is just that. It is an award that is designed to annually recognize the best of the best PMOs. If your calendar permits, this is a must-attend event for PMO practitioners and enthusiasts.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "CFO pleads, stop speaking project management mumbo-jumbo!" Last night, on my flight from Pennsylvania back to Orlando, Florida, I found myself sitting next to a CFO. Not long after the plane took off, I took out my laptop to do some work. I suppose the nature of what was on my laptop screen gave away my occupation, and after a few moments, my fellow passenger struck up a conversation with me. After pleasant introductions, he shared with me more about his company and specially, quite a bit more about what he thought of the company’s PMO. Generally speaking, he was not at all satisfied with the PMO and he cited three reasons.

Episode 248: Is Your PMO Qualified?

Thu, 06 Sep 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Is Your PMO Qualified?" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. I often get asked for tips for how to rapidly set up a PMO and for how to show compelling results within the first six months of the PMO that demonstrate, to everyone's satisfaction, the value of the PMO. But before getting to the magical roadmap of steps to set up a PMO, I always first ask a simple question. And that is, is your PMO initiative qualified? This, almost always, produces a blank stare, much like the proverbial dear in the headlights of a fast moving vehicle late at night.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo shares, "Announcing a new green PM learning opportunity." I just received a nice email from Rich Maltzman, a wonderfully kind man and expert in all things PMO. Rich just told me about a new learning opportunity. Rich and his compatriots are running a very important 7 PDU online, instructor-led course with the Sustainability Learning Centre of Canada. By way of course description, this program is comprised of four sequential 90-minute modules with engaging assessments. The assessments must be completed to advance to the next module (1, 2, and 3), and there is one final assessment (at the end of Module 4) required for completion of the entire program.

Episode 247: Top Three Characteristics of an at Risk PMO

Fri, 26 Aug 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Top Three Characteristics of an at Risk PMO" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. As many of you know, I am a big proponent of the concept of the Business Driven PMO. About a decade ago, after performing some basic PMO research, it became clear to those of us involved in the PMO research project, that the findings were showing a cluster of data in two distinct and measureable areas. At the time, we coined these to clusters Business Driven PMOs and Inwardly Focused PMOs. Today, we present the top three characteristics of an inwardly focused, at risk, PMO.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo announces, "Introducing Samir Penkar's project management site, The Future of Project Management." In this PMO Podcast episode, I would like to introduce all of you to a very nice and smart man, Mr. Samir Penkar, who has a new project management site called The Future of Project Management. Samir is creating project management and PMO commentary that is fresh, content rich and very thought provoking. Visit the futureofprojectmanagement.com and say hello to Samir.

Episode 246: Top Three Characteristics of a Business Driven PMO

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents "Top Three Characteristics of a Business Driven PMO" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. At the time, we coined these to clusters Business Driven PMOs and Inwardly Focused PMOs. Today, we present the top three characteristics of a business driven PMO.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo asks, "Is Project Risk Management tied to Personal Risk Management?" This last month, I have been spending more time than usual discussing Project Risk Management with peers, colleagues, and some of my PMO manager friends. Our discussions came about on account of each of us having some kind of personal project at home to manage. And what we discovered was a correlation between Project Risk Management and Personal Risk Management.

Today, we have with us Matthew Weaver, an experienced project management trainer, consultant, and subject matter expert. Matthew is here to share with us his experiences and perspectives.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Green Fatigue." OKAY, I will be the first to say it. I am greened-out. I am tired of hearing about green this and green that. Okay, crucify me now. My green fatigue is not because of over use of the term, nor is it due to all of the exploitative things that always accompany if not take over such a cause, nor is it on account of government waste, abuse, and fraud related to all things green. I suppose the reason that I am so greened-out is that deep down I am a Deming enthusiast and process improvement advocate.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Who makes project decisions; the project manager or the software developer?" Today, I have a question for all of you listening based upon a real life company. In this company, the software developer told the project manager that the planned time for the development of a particular capability was going to take an extra two weeks. What is it about being a leader that some people do naturally and use to their advantage and others struggle with? Episode 241: The New Project Management Triangle, Part 2 - Business Acumen

Fri, 13 Mar 2012 11:47:01 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "The New Project Management Triangle, Part 2 - Business Acumen," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Most project management professionals are familiar with the term, the project management triangle. In the traditional project management triangle, the three points of the triangle (scope, time, and cost) refer to the triple constraints. Have you heard of the New Project Management Triangle?

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Think outside the box!" Thinking outside the box is more than just a business cliché. It means approaching problems in new, innovative ways; conceptualizing problems differently; and understanding your position in relation to any particular situation in a way you’d never thought of before. We’re told to “think outside the box” all the time, but how exactly do we do that?

Wed, 11 Mar 2012 11:47:01 GMT

Most project management professionals are familiar with the term, the project management triangle. In the traditional project management triangle, the three points of the triangle (scope, time, and cost) refer to the triple constraints. Have you heard of the New Project Management Triangle?

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Why do we call them soft skills?" When I hear the term soft skills, I always and regrettably think of these skills as nice to have but not really necessary. But in today’s PMO environments, one could easily make the case that the so-called hard skills, technical project management, are really secondary to these all important soft skills.

If your PMO is like many of today's PMOs, then you know all too well that anything that looks like a problem, especially if it lives and exists across a number of the line of business silo organizations, it comes to the PMO. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "How to deal with an arrogant executive." Arrogance is defined as conceit, self-loving and egotistic. In general, arrogance is self-confidence on drugs. Many executives do not know the distinction between leading and controlling. Arrogant executives never gain the respect of their followers. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Negative levels of maturity." How many times have we started off a discussion about PMO maturity with the assumption that when we start a new PMO, the maturity level of the PMO is Level 1? But what if the true starting point for maturity is not even at Level 1 on the maturity scale? Is this possible? Well, not only is this possible, but it is quite likely.

Episode 231: Live from Tokyo, Good Housekeeping with 5S

Wed, 01 Feb 2012 11:47:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "Live from Tokyo, Good Housekeeping with 5S" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Have you heard the term 5S in a project management context? Do you know what the term 5S means? And do you know the company in Japan credited with its development? If you answered yes to all three of these questions, then give yourself a big pat on the back. The history of 5S goes back as far as the 16th Century and Venice shipbuilders. In an effort to streamline the assembly process, workers used quality process production to build ships in hours instead of days or weeks. From there, it was Sakichi Toyoda and son Kiichiro as well as Toyota engineer Taiichi Ohno who developed the 5S methodology after World War II.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Learn from others." Learning from others is a very easy thing to do, but how many of us take the time to do it. Or worse, how many folks don’t even take the view that they can learn from others, rather they would instead seek to put others in their place so to speak.

Have you ever watched an episode of the TV show Seinfeld? If you have, then you know all about the character George Costanza, played by the comedic genius, Jason Alexander. In the show, George is the consummate loser, a lazy but not unintelligent man. In fact, if George would just spend as much time mastering how to do work well as he does mastering how to avoid work altogether, he would no doubt be a valued asset to any organization. But alas, and as it is, George could never be a good project manager, only fool others into believing it. Here are what would no doubt be George Costanza’s Top 10 Tips for appearing to be a Good Project Manager.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Don't use profane language." What advantage is there to swearing? Well, it's easy and everyone knows you're really upset. But the disadvantage? It demonstrates you aren't capable of coming up with actual words to describe your opinions.

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "Why was the project manager fired?" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. This little exercise is one of several exercises that I have given over the last several years in PMO workshops all around the world. The purpose of this exercise is to invite discussion and debate about how we approach the practical application of project management in today's business reality.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Beware of the one shoe fits all sizes methodology." For most organizations, this is ill advice. Nonetheless, it happens time and time again.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Don't be the PMO Methodology Police." If there is a common refrain to failed PMOs, this is it. The PMO becomes the viewed "The Methodology Police" tasked to enforce methodologies. Whether or not the methodology is any good is another issue. But to the point, at best, being the PMO police leads to complaints from project managers. At worst, it leads to open revolt and ignoring the methodology and the PMO entirely.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "The Three Kinds of Dashboards that All PMOs Have." Many organizations struggle with PMO dashboarding. Some view PMO dashboarding as a graphical summary view of real-time project portfolio management application data. Others think of PMO dashboarding as a set of automated business intelligence reports and analytics. And yet others view PMO dashboarding as a "one picture tells all" contextualized dashboard that is periodically prepared for the leadership team. Which view is correct? They all are!

Aha, I got you. Now that most companies and organizations are on Microsoft Office 2007 or even 2010, users are now spotting an RSS Feed folder right within their email client. Many PMOs have innovatively taken advantage of that RSS Feed feature within the email client to offer their constituents, the executives, a PMO RSS Feed to provide such useful information as PMO dashboards, alerts, announcements, and supporting news and information.

Grant is a regular speaker at national conferences, has been a PMI certified Project Management Professional since 2001, and has an MBA (with Distinction) from New Zealand’s Victoria University. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Don’t do things for the first time more than once." Recently, I worked with and spent some time with a PMO Manager. And I asked him what the keys of his success and the success of his PMO were? I was expecting to hear things like skill, experience, maybe a new twist on how to use a tool or institutionalize a process. So, what he told me came as a bit of a surprise. You see, when he started the PMO, there were the usual mission statements, goals, objectives, and strategies. But what he focused on most and what he asked his team for help in focusing on with him was to only do things for the first time once. And not a second, third, and fourth time. Episode 201: The 2010 PMO Symposium, an Interview with Craig Letavec, Vice Chair, and PMO Expert

Wed, 25 Aug 2010 11:46:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "The 2010 PMO Symposium, an Interview with Craig Letavec, Vice Chair, and PMO Expert" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. Today, we have with us Mr. Craig Letavec, the Vice Chair of Operations of the PMI PMO Special Interest Group. Craig is also a well know PMO expert, author, and speaker on the subject of PMOs. His book, "The Program Management Office" is a must read for anyone setting up or refreshing a PMO. This is Craig's first time on the PMO Podcast and he is here to tell us about the 2010 PMO Symposium.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, "Defending Taylor!" It is fashionable these days to be critical of scientific management and to find the term "Taylorism" being used as a derogatory battle cry for opponents of the theory as if the Industrial Era were the dark ages of mankind. To such critics, Taylor's system of controls, measurements, and output based pay stand in diametric opposition to flattened organizations, self-directed teams, and agile minded knowledge workers. Though Taylor is perceived by today's management gurus as a villain, a fair and balanced look at his life reveals that he is really a tragic hero.

Episode 200: Is the term Agile PMO an oxymoron?

Wed, 14 Apr 2010 11:46:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "Is the term Agile PMO an oxymoron?" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. These days were are hearing more and more about the Agile PMO. Have you heard that term before, the Agile PMO? Do you, like some, believe that PMOs should seek to adopt agile software development techniques, or do you like others, think that the term Agile PMO is an oxymoron?

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “Should software development be managed as a project?” Recently, I had an opportunity to meet a leading agile software developer and agile blogger. This expert software developer espouses with passion the concept that software development is a craft. It is art, if you will. Software development is not a process like manufacturing. Nor is it an engineering practice like building a house or a bridge. And as such, software development should not be managed like a project at all. Or should it?

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether the business case or the project charter is to be prepared first.

Episode 199: PPM is Not Easy, Part 3

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 11:46:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "PPM is Not Easy, Part 3," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. There are many that claim that the concept of project portfolio management is an easy concept to grasp and they compare management of a project portfolio to the management of a financial portfolio. Really! This is the third of a three part series that suggests PPM is not that easy afterall.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “Learning from Taylor." Do you know of a man named Frederick Taylor? Have you heard the term Taylorism? Taylor is credited for inventing scientific management. Taylor believed that decisions based upon tradition and rules of thumb should be replaced by precise procedures developed after careful study of an individual at work. Its application is contingent on a high level of managerial control over employee work practices. In management literature today, the it is not viewed favorable at all and greatest use of the concept of Taylorism is as a contrast to any new, improved way of doing business, such as agile..!

The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about what to do with a bad project manager.

Episode 198: PPM is Not Easy, Part 2

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 11:45:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "PPM is Not Easy, Part 2," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. There are many that claim that the concept of project portfolio management is an easy concept to grasp and they compare management of a project portfolio to the management of a financial portfolio. Really! This is the second of a three part series that suggests PPM is not that easy afterall.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “How to handle inappropriate humor on the project team." Light-hearted banter and joking on the project team can be helpful for keeping stress low and spirits high. Unfortunately, crude humor can sneak up and morph into inappropriate and offensive joke-telling over time. So, how do you respond to offensive behavior without alienating yourself, the offending person, or the project team?

Episode 197: PPM is Not Easy, Part 1

Mon, 12 Apr 2010 11:44:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "PPM is Not Easy, Part 1," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. There are many that claim that the concept of project portfolio management is an easy concept to grasp and they compare management of a project portfolio to the management of a financial portfolio. Really! This is the first of a three part series that suggests PPM is not that easy afterall.

The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “Unrealistic Deadlines." Some would argue that the majority of projects have "schedule slippage" as a normal end result rather than an exception to the rule. The challenge of many project managers becomes to find alternate approaches to the tasks and schedules in order to complete a project "on time", or to get approval for slipping dates out.

Episode 193: The Value of a PMO

Fri, 09 Apr 2010 11:43:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "The Value of a PMO," presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. For many organizations it takes courage and a leap of faith to start a PMO. Forming a PMO shouldn't be taken lightly; rather the benefits should be and can be clearly documented. According to Gartner Industry Research, "building a PMO is a competitive tactic". Gartner believes that organizations that establish standards for project management will experience half the major project cost overruns, delays, and cancellations of those that fail to do so. That’s what PMOs can do. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “Be Clear about PMO Coaching." Does your PMO provide coaching? Does it provide training? PMO coaching is actually quite different from project management training. Training implies a formal teacher-student relationship, and usually formal instruction of material. Coaching is more flexible to the situation at hand, and usually involves talking and explaining how things are done in the context of the project and work effort through describing and showing how project management processes, tools, and techniques can assist. If your PMO provides coaching, be clear about what this coaching encompasses. The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about the difference between a Project Manager and Project Leader. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed. With every new encounter, you are evaluated and yet another person’s impression of you is formed. Are you wondering what MUSIC has to do with Project Management? Today, we are going to talk about the first dimension of the Project Management MUSIC model which is the Myopic Dimension. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “PMO Dashboarding – The Three Must Haves." Not long ago, we surveyed 25 CIOs and asked them about PMO dashboarding. And what they told us was very insightful. What came out loud and clear was that CIOs and other members of the leadership team want periodical dashboards, typically monthly, that do three very important things. Episode 186: Project Manager Leadership

Sun, 04 Apr 2010 11:30:00 GMT

This week The PMO Podcast™ Featured Story presents, "Project Manager Leadership" presented by Mark Perry (about Mark), host of The PMO Podcast™. How do you exhibit your project manager leadership? I am not referring to the technical side of project management in terms of tools, processes, and know how? Rather, I am talking about human behavior and leadership as a subject matter expert, servant leader, or perhaps just an individual contributor, sharable resource. Take the case of Eldon, a senior program manager with years of experience, who exhibits, leadership, project manager leadership in all that he does. The PMO Podcast™ Points Memo presents, “PMBOK and Agile." Are PMBOK and Agile friends or foes? For years the PMBOK folks have ignored Agile. And, PMOs have imposed PMBOK aligned approaches upon development teams that would rather be adopting Agile techniques. To deny the friction between PMBOKers and Agilistas is a great mistake. To assume that the PMBOK can be forced upon developers, instead of the approaches that they want to adopt, is even a worse mistake. But, there is a silver lining to this cloudy sky. The PMO Podcast™ Mailbag answers a listener question about whether or not to use OPM3 Online or the OPM3 Product Suite. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate on a PMO roundtable discussion at an agile development venue in which the letters PMI were being used as invectives for all things wrong with project management and with PMOs. What is with the PMI bashing? Does anyone benefit from this? I don’t think so. While it is important that the project makes progress, it is far more important where the project is progressing in the right direction.
