Mother's Day and Its Birth

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 08:44:48 -0500

There are many exciting and glamorous professions in the world but none as marginalized, trivialized and taken for granted as that of motherhood. At its very root the label of mother is often underestimated and even associated to that of a mere caretaker. However this underestimated, and potentially unflattering, description seems to discount the true value and significance of motherhood. Mothers, these superhuman beings who immerse themselves into their prime passion which not only includes the care for their children but also transforming themselves into whatever function is required of them by their family. They can be the primary unofficial health care practitioner, nutritionist, educator, psychologist, emotional support system, protector from all that is evil and, at times, even a warden. If this sounds like the type of person that merits the label of "hero' - well, yes definitely. Their unconditional love, selfless commitment and dedication, as well as their strong tendencies for altruistic is only matched by the behavior of their fellow mothers. These nurturers of life and cultivators of character who are often taken for granted, and even neglected, have one day per year during which they are celebrated.

Wishing for a 2005 Christmas or Am I?

Sun, 25 Dec 2016 17:23:27 -0600

Another Christmas Up the Chimney

Sun, 25 Dec 2016 17:20:09 -0600

It hardly seems possible that another Christmas has come and gone. I think it comes quicker than it goes, but then that is just my opinion. We were sitting for the last time around the Christmas tree which was about to be disassembled and I happen to say, "I can't believe Christmas is over. Where does the time go?" To that, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage looked at me and said, "The older you get, the faster time goes." Santa Claus Is White And That Is Racist - Actually, Once He Starts Working, He Is Black As Can Be

Mon, 19 Dec 2016 07:11:59 -0600

Today I talked to a College Student at the Malibu CA Starbucks, she was a very well-spoken gal, obviously from a family with means (judging by the Porsche she drove off in), and it was obvious that she had a fairly significant IQ with lots of prep-school education prior to her Pepperdine attendance. We got to talking about cultural challenges in our society. Specifically, the undercurrent of racism and as an example she noted that Jesus is depicted as a white male, and Santa Claus was also white. I laughed but decided to let her explain - and she gave me a perturbed facial expression and went into her pre-considered and obviously rehearsed speech.

The Merrification of Christmas

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 19:04:09 -0600

One word defines Christmas. It is the word "merry." I never tire of wishing people a Merry Christmas. Although, for some, it may not be politically correct, but for the rest of us who have at least two gray cells working, it is wonderful. I was relaxing one afternoon this past week when the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage approached me with a request. Thanksgiving Quandary: Roast Turkey or Lame Duck

Sat, 19 Nov 2016 19:00:55 -0600

My father used to tell me anything worth doing was worth doing right the first time. If you have time to do it the second time, you have time to do it right the first time. As fathers go, he was right. It seems most people have not learned this lesson, least of all politicians who are supposedly serving the interests of their constituency. I know there are good politicians in America today. Nobody seems to know who they are, though.

Of Easter Eggs

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 06:55:15 -0500

The older I get, the less current holidays mean to me... and the more those from years, even decades ago. I see the vivid Easter displays; (these days pharmacies seem to have the most and largest.) But these festive aisles and windows, the bags of candy, and, of course, the seasonal cuddlies do not speak to me. They merely mark the calendar as just another day. That was not always the case, but years and unrelenting death have so thinned the ranks of the significant players in these annual rites that the dead now significantly outnumber the living, of whom, graying, I am yet one. I do not mind giving up this present holiday; there is little enough to lose. But I would mind relinquishing my memories of Easter Days gone by, for there are my beloved ghosts, each and every one as vital in my mind's eye as quick, not long defunct. And because these folks are even more precious to me now than then, I wish this Easter to remember them through the medium of eggs, colored eggs, hidden eggs, Easter eggs.
