Many service members experience situations that lead to life-long consequences:

Thanksgiving Quandary: Roast Turkey or Lame Duck

Sat, 19 Nov 2016 19:00:55 -0600

My father used to tell me anything worth doing was worth doing right the first time. If you have time to do it the second time, you have time to do it right the first time. As fathers go, he was right. It seems most people have not learned this lesson, least of all politicians who are supposedly serving the interests of their constituency. I know there are good politicians in America today. Nobody seems to know who they are, though.

Of Easter Eggs

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 06:55:15 -0500

The older I get, the less current holidays mean to me... and the more those from years, even decades ago. I see the vivid Easter displays; (these days pharmacies seem to have the most and largest.) But these festive aisles and windows, the bags of candy, and, of course, the seasonal cuddlies do not speak to me. They merely mark the calendar as just another day. That was not always the case, but years and unrelenting death have so thinned the ranks of the significant players in these annual rites that the dead now significantly outnumber the living, of whom, graying, I am yet one. I do not mind giving up this present holiday; there is little enough to lose. But I would mind relinquishing my memories of Easter Days gone by, for there are my beloved ghosts, each and every one as vital in my mind's eye as quick, not long defunct. And because these folks are even more precious to me now than then, I wish this Easter to remember them through the medium of eggs, colored eggs, hidden eggs, Easter eggs.

"Oh Danny Boy Oh Danny Boy I Love You So," But Not in Southie and NOT in the St Patrick's Day Parade

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 06:45:27 -0600

Have you ever been to South Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade? It is at the best of times a pitiable thing, ramshackle, disorganized, still smelling of the mother load that Billy O'Sullivan barfed on Monseigneur Murray last year. They battled against the gays and lesbians marching. Gay rights organizations understandably want total equality. Read on to hear a solution to solve this conundrum.

During the holiday season we continually hear the complaints and responses of people as they notice the "Xmas" greeting in place of the all familiar "Christmas." To many uninformed people this is an indication of disrespect and an attempt to remove the word Christ from the greeting making it a non-religious name. Others profess that those people who use the "X" in place of the word Christ are at best a lazy batch of people who are deliberately attempting to secularize the celebration of Jesus Christ's birth. This would seem to mean that society as a whole was attempting to cross out or eliminate the word Christ from our vocabulary. Folks according to research conducted nothing like this is even remotely truthful or verified.

Merry Christmas to All! (I Ain't Afraid of No Grinch!)

Wed, 23 Dec 2015 07:24:13 -0600

At this this time of year, I miss Christmas's past, those of years ago when I was a kid. The excitement was greater by far then, the anticipation grew more intense by the day as Christmas drew near. I especially miss the old days of Christmas in a rural area. Christmas meant Christmas trees each year. In the country, one does not go to a tree lot to buy a dried-out and sometimes-scraggly, exorbitantly priced Christmas tree. in rural areas one packs their recently sharpened ax, heads to the nearest wooded area, scouts out the best fir tree there, and harvests it.

Christmas in America Compared to Christmas in Italy, Two Pleasurable Holiday Destinations!

Mon, 14 Dec 2015 06:44:03 -0600

Whether you decide to celebrate Christmas in America or in Italy, you'll find that the experience will be pleasurable. Both countries have much to offer during the holidays! It's surprising how the two countries have become so similar at Christmas time due to the similar religious traditions, due to the opportunities for shopping, and thanks to most people's desires to spend quality time with friends and family. Whereas thirty years ago the use of the Internet was less frequent, today the two cultures both explore each other's traditions which has resulted in increasing similarities. Most Americans and Italians would agree that Christmas is about essentially about sharing one's time, sharing the love, and helping the needy in imitation of the story of Jesus. In both cultures, even those people who are not Christians still enjoy the popular character known as Santa Claus or, in Italian, "Babbo Natale." Christmas affords all of us the chance to see how we can share similar values and traditions so we become less divided. In America, we can thank Italian-American immigrants for the fine traditions they also brought to our country. There will always be a special relationship between Americans and Italians all year long!

Holiday Stollen: A Tasty Tradition

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 06:46:13 -0600

I love this time of year when the doldrums of cold days and dark nights are broken up by some of our favorite holidays. Thanksgiving gets things started and soon enough Christmas is on its heels. The various holiday foods are definitely one of my favorite parts. It's typically but once a year I lay my eyes on pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, fruit cake, and other, well, not so healthy items. They say the average American gains 7-10 pounds during the holidays. It can be difficult to resist those extra calories, especially when Aunt Mae is pushing you to eat "just one more homemade holiday cookie." That special holiday feeling can be quickly replaced by frustration, anger and resentment when willpower drops and the scale starts creeping up.

Don't Compare Yourself to Others During the Holidays

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 13:57:34 -0600

We all compare ourselves to others from time to time. However, this is especially the case during the holidays. Somehow, we want to outstrip our neighbours and look better than them. If we visit someone during the holidays and their house is all decked out, we want our house to be all decked out too. This can cause a lot of frustration and fatigue and it can lead us to many unhappy and stressful moments during the days leading up to the holidays. It is far better for us to simply decide for ourselves how we will decorate our home without checking in with others. I always believe that when we compare ourselves to others, we don't trust ourselves enough. We should just trust that how we decide to decorate and celebrate Christmas is indeed the right way for us and stop comparing ourselves to others all the time. In this article, I will show how to not compare yourself to others and enjoy the holidays.

How to Organize Your Holidays

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 13:56:39 -0600

When we think of the holidays, very few of us believe that we should organize them. Most of us are happy enough to spontaneously and unintentionally move into the holidays and get moving as fast as possible. But I believe that this is one way to exhaust ourselves and ultimately be bedbound by the time Christmas arrives. Organization is the key to having our best Christmas. This is as important for preparing our meals, cleaning, and doing the wash as it is to enjoy Christmas. It is worth sitting down sometime in early December and deciding what is important to you and your family for the holidays. In this article, I will show you how to do this most easily.

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 07:49:14 -0600
