As we all know when it's Christmas time, we Filipinos tend to spend more because we receive bonuses, gifts, and other incentives. I'm not saying that it's not good to spend only when it's needed. Spend only on the money that you have but not more than what you have because you will only end up losing your money.

O Christmas Tree

Fri, 29 Dec 2017 07:19:10 -0600

I happened to go into a large retail store recently and was absolutely shocked by the extremely long wall that was stocked from floor to ceiling with artificial Christmas trees. Sizes ranged from those suitable for desktops or apartments all the way up to those that were well over nine feet in height. Choices included spruce, pine, fir and even some that appeared to have freshly fallen snow on the branches.

A New Year

Fri, 29 Dec 2017 07:19:00 -0600

I had a lot of company over the Christmas holidays. Some were here just to open gifts. Some came to share a meal and others were here for a few days.

Life Is Not A Movie

Fri, 29 Dec 2017 07:18:58 -0600

Younger people are shocked when they find out that I was born in the era of "pre-television". I remember the first day that we got the big box that only showed one black and white event at a time with live commercials. O Canada was played at the end of the broadcasting day followed by a test pattern with a soft but steady squeal that could be observed until the following morning.

How to Remember - November 11th

Fri, 29 Dec 2017 07:16:41 -0600

Memory is an interesting faculty of human life. Often I hear clients express concern about not being able to remember everything or recognizing that their memory isn't working as well as it had in the past. My response is to remind them that we are in an age of information and it is not even possible to remember everything.

Life Is Choices - Choose Thanksgiving

Fri, 29 Dec 2017 07:15:16 -0600

It is so easy to focus on all the things that go wrong in a day or in life. Fall is a season that reminds us to focus on the things that are going right - and to give thanks. Claiming Christmas

Sun, 24 Dec 2017 10:42:15 -0600

It's a shame that American society has traded the foundation of Christmas in order to not offend others by their beliefs. Other traditions stand firm for their beliefs and don't water them down for our benefit. I'm currently not working so thankfully, don't have to worry about it in the workplace this year. I am claiming Christmas and hope that the reader can give me this one day that brings me joy and accept the love in which it is intended.

Christmas Magic Experienced Through English Literature

Sat, 23 Dec 2017 18:38:14 -0600

English literature provides entertainment for people of all ages, and Christmas time is an excellent holiday in which families can share excellent old classics as well as new stories. There's no better way to open up one's imagination than with an excellent story on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. People used to sit around the fireplace and tell stories about Santa Claus or about the Christmas spirits who visited Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (1843) by Charles Dickens. It was a time when people even made up their own stories stories. Sharing a good story, analyzing its meaning, and reacting to it as a group effort created bonds between people, connections that prevailed and that were passed down from one generation to the next. Christmas stories will brighten your holidays. Stories by great authors such as Charles Dickens, can help create bonds with friends and colleagues alike. Long live the art of storytelling at Christmas time!

Behold, the Christmas Grinch Cometh

Sat, 16 Dec 2017 09:03:54 -0600

I never have to look at the calendar to know when the Christmas holiday season is approaching. As soon as I lay down my fork on Thanksgiving Day, the battle drums begin to roll. Somebody, who apparently does not have much of a life, takes a pot shot at the Christmas holiday. You would think, from some of their comments, the Christmas holiday was the greatest conspiracy in all of human history. According to these protesters, the very word "Christmas," offends them to no degree. They forbid people to say cheerfully, "Merry Christmas," as if those words in and of themselves would create the ultimate damage to the person hearing them. To placate these values-challenged patrons, some businesses have chosen not to put the word "Christmas," anywhere near their business, replacing that offensive word with the words, "Happy Holiday." Even employees are prohibited wishing customers a Merry Christmas, but rather a "Happy Holiday." This, according to the all-wise Christmas Grinch, is more acceptable than simply saying, "Merry Christmas."

Thu, 14 Dec 2017 09:43:54 -0600

Santa Claus Hasn't Received My Letter Yet

Sat, 09 Dec 2017 18:08:12 -0600

In first grade, our teacher asked us to pen a letter to Santa for Christmas. She asked us, "Name one present you would like Santa to bring you for Christmas." Then we were to write a letter to Santa, who, according to her, lived at the North Pole, and tell him what we wanted for Christmas and why we wanted it. Then, we put it in an envelope and she mailed it to the North Pole. At the time, I thought my teacher had a connection with Santa Claus. She said so many nice things about him that she must have known him personally. Accordingly, I thought a letter delivered to him by my teacher would have credit.

Mother's Day and Its Birth

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 08:44:48 -0500

There are many exciting and glamorous professions in the world but none as marginalized, trivialized and taken for granted as that of motherhood. At its very root the label of mother is often underestimated and even associated to that of a mere caretaker. However this underestimated, and potentially unflattering, description seems to discount the true value and significance of motherhood. Mothers, these superhuman beings who immerse themselves into their prime passion which not only includes the care for their children but also transforming themselves into whatever function is required of them by their family. They can be the primary unofficial health care practitioner, nutritionist, educator, psychologist, emotional support system, protector from all that is evil and, at times, even a warden. If this sounds like the type of person that merits the label of "hero' - well, yes definitely. Their unconditional love, selfless commitment and dedication, as well as their strong tendencies for altruistic is only matched by the behavior of their fellow mothers. These nurturers of life and cultivators of character who are often taken for granted, and even neglected, have one day per year during which they are celebrated.

We were sitting for the last time around the Christmas tree which was about to be disassembled and I happen to say, "I can't believe Christmas is over. Where does the time go?" Santa Claus Is White And That Is Racist - Actually, Once He Starts Working, He Is Black As Can Be

Mon, 19 Dec 2016 07:11:59 -0600

Today I talked to a College Student at the Malibu CA Starbucks, she was a very well-spoken gal, obviously from a family with means (judging by the Porsche she drove off in), and it was obvious that she had a fairly significant IQ with lots of prep-school education prior to her Pepperdine attendance. We got to talking about cultural challenges in our society. Specifically, the undercurrent of racism and as an example she noted that Jesus is depicted as a white male, and Santa Claus was also white. I laughed but decided to let her explain - and she gave me a perturbed facial expression and went into her pre-considered and obviously rehearsed speech.
