How to Become a Non-Smoker

Sat, 24 Jun 2017 08:22:55 -0500

Trying to quit smoking can be like trying not to think about a pink elephant. Your mental attitude can make a huge difference. Focusing on what you want, rather than what you don't want is the key to your long-term success.

Quitting Smoking - You Pull Your Pants On One Leg At A Time, Don't You?

Sun, 11 Jun 2017 10:35:18 -0500

Having helped over 2,000 to quit smoking I believe I have heard every possible reason for not being able to quit. My response to these excuses, which are keeping people trapped, is often very similar. "What is special about you?" If people all around the world are quitting smoking what is so special about you that prevents you from quitting. Most people have stress in their lives, most feel bored at times and everyone likes to relax at the end of a busy day. So what makes you so different from the millions who don't need a cigarette to do it?

Which Habit Do You Want To Be a Slave To?

Sun, 14 May 2017 08:39:34 -0500

Most smokers who want to quit acknowledge that they are a slave to their cigarette habit. The rest either don't want to quit or are in denial. Recently I aksed a potential quit client what would happen if she didn't have any cigarettes in the middle of the night. She immediately said she would drive around until she could find a service station open. Talk about a slave to her habit!

Letting Go Of The Guilty Cigarette

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 07:26:37 -0500

Just recently I went into the home of an acquaintance and they seemed to look a little guilty. It seemed kind of odd until I smelled the tell-tale odor of cigarettes. I didn't realise this person smoked, and given by profession they preferred for me not to know. I have no judgement on this person or any other smoker, I'm just there when they need to quit. This person is not alone in the category of secret smoker. I have had many clients over the years, who smoked only in private, but felt guilty because in many instances they were very healthy otherwise.

Quitting Smoking - What If Cigarettes Were Invented Today?

Wed, 26 Apr 2017 07:03:33 -0500

I imagine an inventor's television programme where one of the contestants has invented a new thing called the cigarette. "So what is it made from?" It's a plant called tobacco which is dried and processed with a variety of chemicals. "How many chemicals" After it burns about 4000 chemicals most of which are highly toxic and over 200 can enter the brain.

Quit Smoking - The Only Man In The Street

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 07:14:55 -0500

Recently in Brisbane we had a huge downpour of rain following a tropical cyclone in the north of the state. On the heaviest day schools were closed and most shops as well. Late in the day during a lull in the rain I walked outside of our inner city apartment and the streets were empty of people and cars. All except for one man, standing alone outside of an office building, as I was trying to stop my umbrella from self destructing I realised he was smoking.

Quit Smoking - Does Your Religion Help You Or Hinder You?

Sun, 23 Apr 2017 10:09:31 -0500

Every smoker who wants to quit cigarettes brings their belief system with them to the hypnosis session. This includes your religious beliefs. There are two schools of thought I have encountered. The mind is God's domain and hypnosis is verging on an evil intrusion. However I have seen some Christian hypnosis being offered which I assume somehow bi-passes the whole evil thing.

Quit Smoking - What Is Your Smoking Style?

Thu, 13 Apr 2017 09:07:32 -0500

I was recently having an early morning coffee at Mooloolaba beach. A few metres in front of where I sat was a very fit young woman, she surprised me by lighting up a cigarette. I noticed the glances a few walkers gave her as they sped by, perhaps a whole series of judgements in their minds. But none of this was remarkable except for the way the young women smoked her cigarette.

Quitting Smoking - Would You Like To Make A Bet?

Wed, 12 Apr 2017 08:06:19 -0500

I'm pretty sure that the sun will come up in the morning so I would bet on that. Aliens could invade the earth tomorrow but I wouldn't like to take a wager on that. In life there are all kinds of certainties and uncertainties and none of us ever know how the cards will fall. But in some areas of life we know the odds more stacked for or against us. As a smoker the odds that smoking will kill you are reasonably high. But the odds that smoking will make you sick are very high, and the odds that smoking will diminish the quality of your life is pretty much 100%.

Quit Smoking - Using Clear Language To Achieve Your Goal

Fri, 07 Apr 2017 07:54:21 -0500

Words have enormous power to help, to damage, to confuse or to clarify. Out tone can mean we are being genuine or sarcastic, this must be extremely confusing for people trying to learn our language. We make it even harder by speaking in metaphors, which would make no sense at all to a learner of English. A smoker is at a crossroads in their lives. That has two meanings, of course you are not standing in the middle of the road but you are at a point where your life can go in a couple of directions depending on what choice you make.

Infertility: How To Quit Smoking

Thu, 06 Apr 2017 08:15:07 -0500

Smoking is undoubtedly a bad habit that is difficult to cut out of your life. It is an unhealthy habit that can not only affect your organs but it can also affect your reproductive system and cause infertility. Women who smoke 20 cigarettes a day can reduce natural fertility by over 20%. In men, smoking can lead to low sperm counts and slow sperm motility. So if you are trying to have a baby, it is a good idea to quit sooner rather than later. The longer you smoke the more damage you cause to your reproductive system.

Quit Smoking - What Is The Brick Wall You Keep Running Into?

Wed, 05 Apr 2017 07:18:48 -0500

Some things in life seem easy to achieve and some seem difficult, and some even feel impossible. If you are struggling to quit smoking, or if you can quit for a while but keep coming back to it then you need to firstly identify your brick wall and then learn how to demolish it, so that you can be a non- smoker. The first question to ask your self is what does your brick wall look like, or how does it feel. Some examples are stress, anxiety, lack of confidence or self-belief. You may be bored, worried, or even happy.

6 Important Points For Selecting A Quit Smoking Therapist

Mon, 03 Apr 2017 07:32:18 -0500

Ensure your therapist is working with hypnosis. Even according to new scientist magazine hypnosis is by far the most successful way to quit. Because you are working with your unconscious mind, all of your inner strength and resources can be unleashed and used to support your change. Hypnosis doesn't involve willpower or sticking patches with toxic chemicals on your body, nor does it rely on powerful chemicals which are more likely to do more harm than good.

Quit Smoking - What's Your Epiphany?

Sun, 02 Apr 2017 10:42:14 -0500

Every day around the world millions of people want to quit smoking, or lose weight, go to the gym, start a business etc. But as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. For smoking the facts speak for themselves. But facts don't make people change. If logic was a universal motivator then humans would always make good healthy choices. Many smokers declare they are quitting on a regular basis but with little conviction and commitment, and so the attempt either fails to complete or fails to get started altogether. I know it's not about weakness; it's mostly about fear of failure or even the fear of having to cope with life as a non-smoker.

The Most Important Part Of Your Quit Smoking Programme

Fri, 31 Mar 2017 07:58:55 -0500

I am a therapist and I use hypnosis to help clients quit smoking. So you would expect me to say that the most important part of your quit programme would be your hypnosis session. Maybe it would be the hypnotic induction, or the secret hypnosis words used. Perhaps it's the homework that you are given to keep you on track.

How To Quit Smoking When You Are Sceptical Of Succeeding

Thu, 30 Mar 2017 07:54:14 -0500

One of the biggest impediments to successfully quitting smoking is your internal belief system. Henry Ford once said that if you think you can or you think you can't either way you are right. Of course that is easier said than done sometimes. But as you approach your hypnosis quit smoking session you can do so as a skeptic, which will flood your mind with doubt and anxiety. I'm sure you can see how this wouldn't be helpful for you achieving your goal.

Quit Smoking - 7,300 Metres Of Tobacco

Mon, 27 Mar 2017 07:29:10 -0500

The average smoker smokes 20 cigarettes a day for 20 years, which adds up to 7,300 metres or 7,908 yards of tobacco. This equates to approximately 1,460,000 draws of toxic smoke! Holy cow, the human body must be amazing to survive even a fraction of this amount of smoke. What an amazing insult to human tissue.

Quit Smoking - The Domino Effect

Sun, 26 Mar 2017 09:46:06 -0500

I'm sure we have all seen the amazing domino set ups. Thousands of dominos falling one at a time to create an amazing pattern. There are some important differences between dominoes and the domino effect from smoking. Domino displays are well thought out and with predictable outcomes. Smoking cigarettes is rarely thought out at all and the outcomes are highly unpredictable, not as to whether you will suffer, but how you will suffer, and for how long. Domino displays are fun and entertaining and harmless, inhaling toxic smoke may appear to be a kind of enjoyment but is anything but harmless.

Cigarette Smoking Makes Everything Worse

Thu, 23 Mar 2017 07:58:20 -0500

The list for things that cigarettes makes better does not exist. The list of things that aren't affected by smoking is a very short one, and apart from the brief hit of dopamine you get from a smoke, I can't actually think of anything else to add to that list. Physical Cost And even the feel good dopamine gets over shadowed by the stress hormones that follow. There is a simple way to understand how smoking makes everything physically worse. Inside every artery in your body is a lining called the endothelium?

Is Smoking In Your Genes?

Wed, 22 Mar 2017 07:34:23 -0500

I don't mean that you are genetically programmed to smoke, although a small percentage of smokers do carry this gene, it usually manifests in chain smoking and smoking the cigarette right down to the butt. The interesting thing is that most people with this gene don't smoke. This article refers to the effect of smoking on your genes. The study of Epi-genetics looks at the 70% of gene expression that we can influence by our lifestyle and choices. One study showed that boys who started smoking at 12 would pass on the damaged gene to their children.

Quitting Smoking - Are You Ready For The Smoking Police?

Thu, 16 Mar 2017 07:53:00 -0500

I notice media stories about smoking but this one really stands out. In China they have made smoking illegal in some cities in office buildings. To police this this keen anti smoker volunteers with government authority come into businesses and fine smokers about $70. The article was comical, because there were smokers lining the stair wells and corridors and they scattered as the inspectors arrived.

Quit Smoking - Better Than Before

Wed, 15 Mar 2017 07:39:57 -0500

In health terms what almost everyone likes to report after some intervention or action is that they feel better than before. The faster that happens, the happier people are with their therapy. We are all in a rush and delayed gratification doesn't work well for most of us. Advanced hypnosis as a therapy has that exact effect of the majority of people. They come in to a hypnosis clinic, and walk out as a non-smoker. This is definitely a better than before experience. But as the television ads say, there is more!

Why People Smoke After Sex And Not Before

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 06:33:21 -0600

There must be countless scenes in old movies of couples have the celebratory cigarette in bed after sex. In the more subtle days just the smoking scene was enough to imply the unseen steamy activity which had gone before. So why do we see this after sex and not before? Perhaps it's boredom, stress, being disconnected from social media! Maybe it's saving the ashtray mouth, or the smoke enriched hair until the moment of passion has passed could be a good idea but maybe there is a strongly bio-chemical reason behind it all.

Smoking: A Toxic Fixation

Mon, 27 Feb 2017 08:10:29 -0600

Smoking is indeed a toxic fixation because once you get addicted to it you find it really hard to let it go.But, looking at the dreadful aspects of this bad habit, one can certainly take one step forward to dump this hazardous mess for one's own good, in the first place, and next, for the good of those around.

Quit Smoking - What Is Your Gut Reaction?

Sat, 18 Feb 2017 16:47:34 -0600

I'm not talking about your intuition, although I'm sure that gut reaction tells you very clearly that smoking is a really bad idea on many levels. So here is another one. Your gut does a whole lot more than hold food and churn it up for digestion. There is a kilo or more of healthy bacteria in a healthy gut.

Don't Try To Quit Smoking If You Haven't Crossed The Threshold

Thu, 16 Feb 2017 07:51:39 -0600

In my early days in hypnosis I wanted to change the world and fix every smoker, but I realised that was impossible, and it took me a while to work out why. Imagine a straight line and a quarter of the way in from each end there is another line which crosses the first. The quarter at the right hand end represents crossing the threshold to total commitment to change. The quarter at the left hand end represents crossing the threshold to total commitment to remaining the same, or keeping the habit.

Quit Smoking - The Road Ahead

Thu, 09 Feb 2017 07:05:28 -0600

One of the reason many people struggle to quit or endlessly delay the moment is because they can't see the road ahead or they are looking down the wrong road altogether. The wrong road has only the imagined problems along the way. Suffering with cravings, even though at worst they are short lived. What about not being able to relax, and having your stress run out of control without nicotine, or having to breathe all of that fresh air, perhaps your concern is having a spare hand wandering around, and not knowing what to do with it.

Tapping Out of a Smoking Addiction

Tue, 07 Feb 2017 09:18:38 -0600

When Tod came in for his session he was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day and had been smoking most of his life. His conscious mind knew he would be better off if he could break this habit, but the more primitive part of his brain that holds and controls habits, patterns, and stress felt safer with this pattern firmly locked in place. Tapping is a process that works deeply with the primitive, non-verbal part of the brain - the part that holds and controls habits, patterns, stress, and traumatic events. By tapping on the same meridian points used in acupuncture, we send this part of the brain signals of calm and peace, letting it know it can safely release old habits, patterns and stress. Tod was skeptical about this tapping thing, but willing to give it a try.

Tue, 07 Feb 2017 07:06:48 -0600

Becoming a non smoker can be a challenge - but it doesn't need to be. There is so much information available these days to help people give up smoking, safely and without discomfort. Hypnosis to quit smoking is an easy and effective method used and is extremely successful allowing people to quit in only one session. Quit Smoking - Are You Bonding With Your Cigarettes?

Thu, 02 Feb 2017 07:56:06 -0600

Do you want to know how to cut back on smoking in just one day? All you have to do starting from now, is to take the time to truly bond with each and every cigarette you have. Sounds weird? OK the reality is that most cigarettes you have during a busy day pass by largely unnoticed, your mind will be elsewhere, or the smoke just burns itself down in an ashtray. Or perhaps you light up one after the other during an evening of drinking, losing count of how many you smoked.

Quitting Can Improve Your Sex Life

Mon, 30 Jan 2017 14:34:44 -0600

Did you know that quitting tobacco not only makes you healthier? It seems that it can also improve your sex life. Yes, really! How?

Quit Smoking - I Wonder What Your Brain Thinks About It

Mon, 16 Jan 2017 10:08:37 -0600

So you light up a cigarettes, perhaps you are relaxing with a wine or a beer at the end of the day, or maybe you are stressed and stepping out of your workplace in to a grimy alley which is designated as a smoking place. The smoke enters your lungs, then your heart and quickly into your blood stream. The whole reason you lit up is to feel good, but the only way you can feel good is to pump about 200 of the 4000 toxic chemicals now circulating in your blood stream into your brain.

Quit Smoking - Are You The Pig Or The Chicken?

Thu, 12 Jan 2017 07:39:26 -0600

There's and old joke that in the meal of bacon and eggs, the chicken was interested and the pig was committed, for obvious reasons. Here's the problem with being interested in quitting smoking or in anything in life, it is unlikely that there will be any result or tangible outcome. To me as a therapist when I hear someone say they are interested in making some important change, then they are either not ready to commit or they don't want to change, but are too polite or afraid to say so!

Quitting Smoking - Which Department Is In Charge?

Wed, 11 Jan 2017 07:50:07 -0600

In our lives and heads we have many departments. At work we step into one mental space, at home we take the attitude from a different space when playing with our children. If you were buying a home at first you are in the head space of the excited home owner with the vision of family life in your new home, but you have to swap over to the finance department or you may pay too much.

Quitting Smoking - What's Your Health Span?

Thu, 05 Jan 2017 10:24:36 -0600

As a smoker I'm sure you have heard more than enough about the risks and dangers. But have you considered your personal health span and how it is impacted. Firstly your health span is not about how long you will live it's the quality of life you will lead while alive and basically how long you have before your good health evaporates. Life spans for smokers has increased over the past decades because the medical profession simply has more drugs and surgical procedures which can keep you alive.

Quit Smoking - Could You Be 50% Healthier?

Mon, 31 Oct 2016 08:15:18 -0500

I wonder how much healthier you will be in 12 months if you quit smoking in the next week? Would you be 50% healthier or maybe more. How about fitness, I will guess you will be 100% fitter in a year. Most smoker don't exercise a lot because they think, what's the point of going to the gym if I smoke. But one of the first things that happens when a person quits is that they start back at some favourite activity, like gym, running walking, surfing etc.

Quit Smoking - How Superheros Can Help You

Thu, 27 Oct 2016 07:43:12 -0500

One of the most viewed TED talks in history is Amy Cuddy talking about how standing like Wonder Woman can help you to feel more confident. She is a psychologist who specialises in studying how human posture can affect our emotions and our wellbeing. In short standing up straight with your hands on your hips and looking the world in the eye just like wonder woman or superman will reduce your stress hormones in just 2 minutes and boost testosterone which is the confidence hormone. This was confirmed in studies by measuring blood hormone levels at two minute intervals.

Beer Blokes And Sport & 7 Steps To Quit Smoking

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 09:12:17 -0500

Some things seem to go together and for male smokers it is often sport and friends. For some these things are so bound up together that it is hard to separate them. In these situations they don't need to do the polite thing and go outside for a smoke. The TV room will be thick with smoke beer fumes and the smell of take away pizza.

Quit Smoking - What Is Your Identity?

Thu, 20 Oct 2016 08:01:07 -0500

How you perceive yourself and the words you use to describe yourself could be critical to your quit smoking success. Most smokers would say "I am a smoker" this implies that they clearly identify as a smoker. Unconsciously that means that quitting will be harder because in order to do so means creating a new identify.

Quitting Smoking - Weighing Up Emotions

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 08:41:52 -0500

So you smoke to manage your stress, which is very common. When you feel anxious, or overwhelmed you light a smoke, when you feel angry or sad you might smoke, or perhaps when you feel depressed or lonely, bored you smoke. Or maybe you smoke to relax and just let go. So many occasions, events and feelings are accompanied by cigarettes, and it may seem that life would be all hard to manage without them.

Quitting Smoking For Your Future Self

Thu, 13 Oct 2016 08:15:17 -0500

Today you may be thinking about quitting smoking, but chances are that you are still thinking how much you like smoking or at least wondering how you could manage without cigarettes. It has been said that people generally over estimate what we can do in the short term and under estimate what we can do in the long term.

Quit Smoking - Have You Ever Been Really Sick?

Mon, 26 Sep 2016 08:25:11 -0500

As I write this article I have had a stomach bug for 9 hours. It started at 3 am in the morning and I feel rubbish to say the least. Nauseous, aching and exhausted it's been a long day and unfortunately it's not over yet. This got me thinking about what it would be like to be really sick, to be chronically ill with the prospect of being disabled or dead.

Quit Smoking - What Is Your Smoking Conflict?

Tue, 13 Sep 2016 15:31:55 -0500

Most mornings I walk down by the river in my city. There are lots of people walking running and cycling. One man stands out, he is about 50 and is wears the full cycling outfit. Like a lot of riders his age his tight outfit struggles to contain his girth. But the thing that stands out the most is that he stops at the same water fountain for a drink and then lights up a cigarette.

10 Top Non-Medical Ways to Quit Smoking

Wed, 07 Sep 2016 13:29:17 -0500

Smoking has become a global phenomenon. Many people get initiated into the world of smoking pleasure under the peer pressure. All of them are fully aware of the hazards associated with smoking habit. Once initiated, they cannot come back due to the craving for it. This article lists out top 10 non-medical ways to quit smoking for the benefit of its readers who are chronic smokers.

Quit Smoking - What Are Young Smokers Thinking?

Mon, 29 Aug 2016 08:18:55 -0500

I'm not a mind reader so I am often curious about what people are thinking when they are smoking. I'm even more curious when I see young people with a cigarette. I can understand someone in their fifties who grew up in in an era when smoking was cool and freely advertised in all forms of media. But when I see someone in their teens or twenties I am really curious. So I'm going to guess, some teenagers are sick of being told what to do by all kinds of authorities and smoking is one way to rebel or stand out in the crowd.

Quitting Smoking - I Love It, I Hate It

Thu, 25 Aug 2016 06:59:49 -0500

A very common thing I hear from my quit smoking clients is that they enjoy smoking, they love to smoke when relaxing with friends, or having a drink or a coffee, but each day they wake up thinking that they wished they could quit cigarettes. It's like being torn in two directions at once, in the end something will fail, and it is usually the quitting which fails. It's like the person on the diet who eyes the dessert trolley and says, "I know I shouldn't but hit me with that big lump of sugary heaven". The struggle between good and bad seems endless.

Quitting Smoking, Your Belief Will Trap You Or Set You Free

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 15:40:14 -0500

Many smokers believe that either it will be very difficult to quit or even impossible for them. This belief can be a self-fulfilling trap unless you realise that there is a way to escape. Henry Ford famously stated that "if you think you can or you think you can't you are right" So we can translate that as if you think you can quit or you think you can't you are right. This may sound too easy, but truly changing your mind and thinking can be tricky. Bruce Lipton Ph.D describes a human as a big petri dish and the medium that feeds us is our blood. He goes on to say that what defines the blood is our thoughts.

Quit Smoking - Handling The Quit Cravings

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 09:58:54 -0500

Right up front I have to say that the best way to quit smoking is with hypnosis. It simply works for most of the people most of the time. Most people will have little or no quit cravings but some will have a bit of a challenge on their hands. In my experience it is with those people who have long used smoking to manage their stress. Even though in the hypnosis process they discover that nicotine increases their stress hormones, a part of them clings to their old ways.

Quit Smoking - It's Nicotine, Not Cocaine!

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 09:27:16 -0500

The belief of many smokers is that nicotine is as addictive as cocaine and this explains why it is so hard to quit. Even the drug companies support this argument by promoting drugs which have a serious impact on the dopamine receptors in your brain as a solution. This should solve the addiction right? Well about 23% of people do quit using the drugs, but many of the rest have side effects which are so disturbing that the risk reward is very bad. From nightmares, to vomiting to psychotic breakdowns and even heart attacks.

Quitting Smoking - Not Enough Commitment

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 06:59:00 -0500

Over the past few years I would have fielded perhaps 3000 phone inquiries from people interested in quitting smoking. I can usually tell very quickly which people will book an hypnosis session and which won't. I can now guess very accurately which people will sail through the process and which will have difficulty. Occasionally I get it completely wrong, but not often. When alarm bells ring on the phone, sometimes I will advise a person that I may not be able to help them, and usually I sense that at best they are wanting to try to quit, but there is just not enough commitment.

Quit Smoking - How Would You Like Your Body To Work?

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 07:37:22 -0500

The human body is very complex and it allows us to do amazing things, so it would seem only natural to look after the very thing that carries us through life. Strangely enough most people either don't think about it or just don't care. It doesn't make any sense unless you consider the time factor. If you place your hand on a hot plate then you will either move it or get burned. Either way you will get immediate feedback.

Quitting Smoking - How Can You Escape The Grip Of Cigarettes?

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 09:50:16 -0500

Smoking is a perfectly designed trap. Most people start when they are young and open to peer pressure. The cigarette companies had carefully crafted their marketing messages for decades, before governments cracked down on their behavior, of course now they have turned their attention to promoting into developing countries with large populations.

Quit Smoking - How To Reduce The Anxiety Of Quitting Cigarettes

Mon, 08 Aug 2016 08:23:33 -0500

Quitting Smoking can be an anxious time for many people and there are a few reasons which can make it harder. The fear of the unknown. If you have smoked for a long time then you may be anxious about how you will manage your stress or boredom or drinking sessions without a cigarette. This anxiety is because you are looking at the future without cigarettes from a smokers perspective. A non-smoker never has such concerns.

Quit Smoking - Good Grief, Another Price Rise

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 08:29:17 -0500

Australian smokers pay about 400% more for a packet of cigarettes than in many states of the USA. And they know that each year the price will rise to $40. Of course a couple of years later the cost of smoking will naturally rise again. The typical smoker I see as a client smokes one packet per day, which comes to an average of $150 a week depending on where they buy. All are aware of the weekly cost but few want to think about the long term.

Quit Smoking - Rules And More Rules

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 06:54:21 -0500

Those who wish to quit smoking are all too aware of the ever increasing number of rules being applied to you. I live in Brisbane and the city mall is declared a non-smoking zone, leaving smokers to huddle in lane ways during their breaks. You need to carry a tape measure with you or have a surveyor on hand to ensure you don't smoke within the restricted distance of a restaurant, or shop or school etc.

Why Individuals Opt For Stop Smoking Hypnosis Treatments

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 06:50:01 -0500

Quitting addictions like cigarette can be a huge challenge. However, with the right treatment, individuals can easily and efficiently stop smoking which can help improve their future.

Quitting Smoking - The Mirror Sometimes Lies

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 07:06:56 -0500

It would be a powerful motivator if everyone who had smoked for more than a few years showed obvious signs in the mirror. It certainly does for some people especially for slim women around the age of forty. They tend to have a characteristic look around the mouth. Generally a series of deep lines which radiate away from the mouth. Older smokers tend to have a pale grey appearance which makes them look like the after world is just around the corner.

Quitting Smoking - Making The Tough Decisions

Thu, 02 Jun 2016 07:24:56 -0500

At any time a high percentage of smokers would like to quit, but only a small number actually take action. You may be wanting to rid yourself of cigarettes, but are avoiding setting a quit date for a whole lot of different reasons. For some there is a belief that those who quit had more willpower, or strength or for some reason it was easy for them. But the real story is that many of them didn't want to quit, but they knew they just had to, or they were anxious of being without their smokes and stopped anyway.

Quitting Smoking - When Your Medicine Becomes Your Poison

Tue, 31 May 2016 08:48:42 -0500

So you want to quit smoking but you have so many fond memories of cigarettes locked away in your unconscious mind. Looking cool, or more mature, relaxing or being part of a peer group all made smoking seem like a good idea. In time you used smoking to manage stress and boredom, or to help you to think so cigarettes took on a kind of therapeutic or medicinal role. Decades ago doctors even prescribed smoking for nervous people.

Quitting Smoking, Timing Is In The Mind

Thu, 19 May 2016 06:14:26 -0500

Most smokers have set routines for smoking and feel cravings coming on if they miss those times. But an interesting study showed that the cravings were not fixed to time but to events. The study involved flight attendants. The routine was that after a four hour flight where they were free from cravings, that when the plane landed and arrived at the arrival gate they felt the cravings for a cigarette kick in. They then tested the same group of attendants on a six hour flight and found that were craving free until, once again they arrived at the arrival gate.

Quitting Smoking - When It's All Too Much

Mon, 16 May 2016 06:55:34 -0500

Sometimes life can be cruel, sometimes tragedy strikes us or misfortune smacks us right in the face. It is more likely at these times that an ex-smoker will start smoking again especially if there are other smokers involved in the problem or are there to give comfort. If you are reading this it's more than likely that you have started again, as not many people tend to read my smoking articles just for fun or curiosity.

Quitting Smoking - Over And Over Again

Mon, 02 May 2016 08:29:30 -0500

I wonder how many smokers reading this have lost count of how many times they have quit smoking. The old joke goes something like "I've quit smoking hundreds of times, I do it every Monday" The problem is that each time most lose a little more confidence with each failed attempt and soon there is little belief left at all, so the next attempt is made with little expectation of success and usually this fails as well.

Quitting Smoking - The 300 Challenge

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 06:43:40 -0500

Your challenge is to quit smoking, mine is to help you achieve that, but another challenge has been to communicate about how to quit smoking. When I wrote my first article I found it easy as I had plenty to say. But after ten articles I thought I had completely exhausted all my thoughts about quitting smoking cigarettes. But I kept on going and now this is my 300th article published on the subject. A reason I could keep going was because as I saw more and more smoking clients I learnt more and more about why people smoke and how to help them quit.

Quitting Smoking - What Helps You To Make Changes

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 08:18:34 -0500

Right up front I'm going to say that hypnosis is the best way to quit smoking by far. With that out of the way let's look at other things you can do to support your hypnosis. The key here is to understand yourself, your nature and what works for you. First up if you are a moderator you can start cutting down before your session. But if you are a abstainer cutting down will be hard. It will be all or nothing for you.

Quitting Smoking And Black Swans

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 06:29:29 -0500

The Author Nicholas Taleb wrote the book "The Black Swan". He is an expert in predicting major and usually bad events in financial markets. The thing about black swan events is that they are unexpected, but when viewed in hindsight there is usually a trail of clues leading up to the time of disaster. The problem is that most often these clues are ignored. Whether any smoker will have a black swan moment such as being diagnosed with a terminal illness is unknown, but probable.

Quit Smoking - Are You A Quitter Or A Person Who Quits?

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 08:07:59 -0500

In the area of smoking where important change needs to be made, where there is a ton of information outlining exactly what happens to smokers, there are three groups of people. Those who don't want to change. Those who try and give up, the quitters. And those who commit themselves to change and quit successfully.

Quitting Smoking - Runners, Lycra And A Smoke

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 08:07:00 -0500

As I was slurping on my morning coffee recently I observed lots of runners, walkers and cyclists passing by, puffing and sweating in the early morning, but one young women caught my eye. She had on super runner shoes and was kitted out in fashionable lycra exercise wear. What was different from all the others was she was drawing on a cigarette. My thoughts weren't about condemning her but more about the inner conflict she was experiencing.

Quit Smoking - Small Big Changes

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 06:52:45 -0500

Going from being a smoker to being a non-smoker can seem like a giant step especially if you have struggled before in the past. And the idea of doing it in an hour or so using hypnosis can almost seem impossible. But so many smokers wake up Monday morning and decide to go cold turkey which is like jumping into the unknown without a parachute. For most they are lighting up again that week having suffered and struggled and annoyed a lot of people around them.

Quit Smoking - Just Stepping Out for Some Fresh Nicotine Filled Smoke

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 06:43:30 -0500

It's commonly heard that someone steps outside for some fresh air, or a smoker says, just stepping out for a smoke, but have you ever said what you were really doing? Just stepping outside for some nicotine filled smoke, and while I'm there I'll suck in 200 chemicals which cross into my brain and the whole 2000 chemicals which head for my liver. At this point I might even imagine I can think more clearly, although it's hard to know with such chaos occurring in my grey cells.

How Smoking Affects As You Pound the Pavement

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 07:03:42 -0500

Smoking is injurious to health - we have been hearing this since our childhood. If this, or the numerous other reasons associated with smoking were not enough to kick the butt, there is another one to do so.

Quitting Smoking - Why Hypnosis?

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 07:41:44 -0500

Most clients I see for quitting smoking have tried most things and for many of them hypnosis is a little bit out of left field but they have generally heard it works. Hypnosis works because it allows you to focus very clearly on one idea for an extended period of time. Our conscious minds cannot hold a single thought for more than 15 seconds on average before we drift to something else. We cannot consciously hold two thoughts simultaneously and make any sense of either.

Quit Smoking to Avoid Cancer and Let the Spirit Heal You

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 06:15:07 -0500

In my younger years everyone smoked. There was barely a household where someone was not puffing away on cigarettes and the air always smelt of it. One ate with the smell, slept with it, even woke up to it, and it was quite normal to put up with it on public transport, in restaurants, even in the doctor's surgery.

Studies Show Cigarette Smoking Causes Chronic Back Pain

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 08:50:14 -0500

Cigarette smoking has a direct influence on many aspects of your health. Back pain is just one of them. You may say that your nicotine addiction doesn't have any influence on your pain. Cigarette smoking is a major factor in the development of chronic back pain. More specifically, it is a major cause of hypertension and coronary artery disease, which negatively influence back pain. Smoking affects your brain's addictive behavior and motivated learning connections. Smokers are three times more likely than nonsmokers to develop chronic back pain.

Smoking Kills Woman's Sex Drive

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 15:08:23 -0500

Smoking hurts every single cell in your body and it influences every aspect of your life in a negative way. Your sex life is no exception. Nicotine addiction reduces your ability to feel pleasure and often it is the source of many arguments. No wonder that smokers are twice as likely to get divorced.

Quit Smoking - The 12 Non Essentials

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 07:37:12 -0500

Each of these actions by themselves helps just a little but in combination they have a powerful effect.

Quit Smoking or Die a Horrible Death

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 14:13:03 -0500

The awful addictive to smoking is causing many to die of cancer. Quit Smoking - What Are You Going To Be When You Give Up?

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 08:37:59 -0500

I saw this on a Tee shirt recently a bit of a spin on what will you do when you grow up. But have you actually thought about how your life will be when you quit smoking. Most smokers focus on the cost and their health problems and of course how they are going to quit cigarettes. This focus grows with each attempt and soon failure becomes an expectation. So what happens next time to try to quit, of course you doubt you can succeed and throw in the towel at the first hurdle.

Quitting Smoking - Getting Past The Bouncers

Thu, 17 Mar 2016 06:35:21 -0500

Many people ask me how hypnosis works for quitting smoking and why it doesn't work for 100% of people. The 100% question is easy, there is no treatment or remedy in the world that works for 100% of people, because there is always the variable human response to intervention. As to how it works. Imagine you are standing in a queue for a top night club, outside you have made a decision to go in and have a great night, but you have to get past the bouncers first. This outside area is like your conscious mind, just because you want to go in doesn't mean anything.

Quit Smoking - Smoothing Off The Rough Edges

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 06:42:40 -0500

For many people quitting smoking is a kind of rough spiky experience but there is a way to smooth off the rough edges. In a previous life over 25 years ago I was a builder so I was thinking about the difference between running your fingers over a rough piece of timber and a nicely sanded piece. In life there are always easier or harder ways of doing things so why not make quitting as smooth as possible.

Smoking Addiction Can Be Overcome

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 14:12:02 -0600

It is one of the most insidious things that humans do and it doesn't only affect the smoker as many who breathe in the toxic fumes are also at risk. Cancer is the big one and should be warning enough and a strong reason to quite the habit. Unfortunately some would rather die from cancer than give it up.

Quit Smoking - I'll Have A Flat White And A Nicotine Patch To Go

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 06:33:26 -0600

So you need a cigarette with your coffee or a beer or a glass of wine right! You need a smoke when you relax on your patio after work. Perhaps you light up when the phone rings and you settle in for a long chat or need a smoke when you drive. This is common right? Most smokers have their own habits and so do you. You are told over and over by the marketing world that nicotine replacement is the way to quit smoking.

Quitting Smoking - Why So Many Struggle To Stop

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 06:48:38 -0600

So many people struggle to stop smoking because of a simple problem. It's about the immediate reward as opposed to the delayed benefit of quitting. So you're bored, or stressed, driving or on the phone and you light up a cigarette and you are immediately rewarded. Suddenly your boredom is solved, you relax the phone conversation is much better.

Quit Smoking - Are You An Abstainer Or A Moderator?

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 15:29:51 -0600

It is said in the area of creating new habits that there are two kinds of people. Moderators are the sort of people who can cut down and reduce their negative habits over time. Abstainers tend to be all or nothing. There is no cutting down, if you try you will experience a lot of stress and you will most likely fail. You know yourself better than anyone else what kind of person you are so it's important not to fool yourself. Cutting down smoking is always just a path to being a non-smoker, I'm sure you're aware that there is no safe level of smoking.

Quit Smoking - The Emotional Roller-Coaster

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 09:08:28 -0600

Everything we do in life is driven by our emotions. Smoking for a while provided some emotional support for you, maybe it still does, but I'm sure you known that propping yourself up emotionally with a burning stick of tobacco is not a good way to live your life. As you get closer to quitting you are feeling new negative emotions with smoking such as fear of illness or death, or feeling a failure for not being able to quit up until now.

Quit Smoking - $40 Per Packet!

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 07:03:37 -0600

In Australia one of our brilliant political parties is floating the idea of raising the price of a packet of cigarettes to $40 per packet. In the same breath they claim this will raise a fortune in extra taxes. I thought our caring governments were interested in helping people quit cigarettes, but it seems it is just a cynical grab for cash. After all most non-smokers would think it's a good idea and it's bad luck for smokers, so they should just suck it up.

Quit Smoking - Is Your Goal A Delusion?

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 08:48:55 -0600

To quote Jim Rohn from his book "The five major pieces to the life puzzle" We cannot causally pursue the goal we have set for ourselves. A goal that is casually pursued is not a goal, at its best it is a wish, and wishes are little more than self-delusion.

Quit Smoking - One Lonely Cigarette Packet

Thu, 25 Feb 2016 07:46:11 -0600

While out walking recently I saw a crushed empty cigarette packet which had been tossed on the ground. I guess this says a few things about the owner. They see littering as OK, good thing is that most smokers don't agree with them.

Quit Smoking - Managing The Boredom Factor

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 06:01:32 -0600

When quit smoking clients come to see me, on their intake form I would estimate that 70% plus tick the box that boredom is a trigger for their smoking. If this is a problem for you then there are four important things to consider.

Quit Smoking - The Permission To Stop

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 09:14:38 -0600

You're an adult, you do what you like within reason, you choose to smoke and it is you who decides to quit right? The idea of the permission to stop smoking cigarettes is about giving yourself the permission to quit. Not seeking someone else's permission.

Quitting smoking can be hard, especially if you try and do it all at once. Many people think they can just pick a day to quit smoking and stop. Just like that! They think it will be easy. But if it was that easy they wouldn't have to pick a day in the future. They'd quit today. Right now. But instead they pick a future date (usually January 1st) and think that by some miracle, they'll wake up on that day with the urge to smoke gone. But even though it's hard to quit there is an easy way to do it that's so simple that you won't even notice that you're quitting, until you realise you've stopped. Don't believe me? Then read on.

Quit Smoking - Habits Are Formed And Broken

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 06:12:14 -0600

You may not think that all the non-smokers out there have the habit of not smoking but there is some truth to it. Every smoker in the world who quit cigarettes has created the habit of not smoking. And many non smokers at some time in their life rejected the choice to smoke, perhaps because of health reasons or they didn't like the taste, but somewhere there they developed the habit of being a non smoker.

Quit Smoking - A Stroll Through An Oncology Ward

Tue, 09 Feb 2016 06:35:37 -0600

Fear based articles are not my style, and fear is not a good motivator for people to quit smoking cigarettes. This article is different because I have had the displeasure of taking to many strolls through an oncology ward. The reason is because at the time of writing my father is in one. He never smoked and has an aggressive leukemia, but there are smokers with lung cancer in his ward.

The Best Gift Ever For Someone Who Smokes

Mon, 08 Feb 2016 08:22:27 -0600

If you want to buy a gift for a smoker, don't buy them something that will help them to keep smoking. It's far too easy to buy them a fancy cigarette lighter or a nice ashtray, but these types of gifts will only help them to keep their bad habit. And it's a habit that is killing them. Literally. So instead buy them something that's not only useful but will help them to kick their habit and will save their life.

Obviously pot is a popular social drug but for some the gloss wears off and all that is left is a habit which takes them away from a happy life.
