Reverend's Reviews: Thai One On 2009-10-16T10:56:43.119-07:00 Love of Siam (now available on DVDfrom Strand Releasing) opened in its home country of Thailand in 2007, and not only received near-universal critical acclaim but also became one of Thailand's all-time box office champs. It also won multiple awards at the Thai Oscars, the Thailand National Awards, and was their official submission to the 81st Academy Awards.Such success was and remains rather surprising, given that the film primarily depicts a romance between two teenage boys. It helps that the boys in question are cute, and never more so than when wearing their schoolboy uniforms of blue shorts and white, short-sleeved dress shirts.Tong is a quiet young man from a conservative Catholic family. He befriends his neighbor, Mew, after protecting him from homophobic bullies. Mew is musically gifted, and as he matures he becomes lead singer of an increasingly popular boy band. The two lose contact for a time when Tong's family moves away but are reunited several years later in Bangkok.Mew and Tong initially remind one another of happier times before their families were impacted by losses but gradually grow closer. A nice visual metaphor for their relationship referenced throughout the film is a Christmas figurine missing its red nose. Although Tong isn't yet capable of expressing his feelings for Mew in words, they seal their love one night through a romantic backyard kiss. Unfortunately for them, the kiss is witnessed by Tong's domineering mother.Love of Siam was written and directed by Matthew Chookiat Sakveerakul. As a coming of age story, the film is sweet and inoffensive (that kiss is the most graphic display of affection in the film) if overlong at 150 minutes and often melodramatic. The melodrama chiefly involves Tong's older sister, who went missing years before during a trip with friends, and his father's subsequent descent into alcoholism. While the storyline has the requisite teen angst to spare, it never feels heavy-handed.The performances are above average all around and Mario Maurer, who plays Tong, is a particular find. He has poise and confidence seemingly beyond his young years. I don't know whether Maurer is a professional actor, but if not he should consider more training. Witwisit Hiranyawongkul, who plays Mew, is also very good and has a nice singing voice (assuming it actually is him singing on the soundtrack). Side note: there is a startling "crotch shot" of Hiranyawongkul on the DVD cover that makes it appear he has a full erection!I wouldn't call Love of Siam a queer classic along the lines of Beautiful Thing or Brokeback Mountain but it does reinforce through its unique Thai lens many universal truths about love: same-sex, opposite-sex and parent-child.Click here to watch the trailer for Love of Siam.Review by Rev. Chris Carpenter, resident film critic of Movie Dearest and the Orange County and Long Beach Blade.[...]
Toon Talk: My Fair Lady 2009-10-16T10:56:43.168-07:00 Eight years after it made its DVD debut as the first in Disney’s Platinum Edition line, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs returns to home video shelves this month on a new, tricked out Blu-ray high definition release. And Snow (along with her seven little friends) are certainly living up to their “fairest ones of all” legacy even now, 70-plus years after their groundbreaking debut on the world stage way back in 1937.Featuring an all-new digital restoration of both sound and visuals, the new Diamond Edition“Combo Pack” set (which includes both a standard DVD of the movie in addition to the two Blu-ray discs and is available in both standard and Blu-ray packaging) is loaded with fresh interactive content and nifty features unique to the HD format. This is what makes it not so much a replacement of the 2001 Platinum release as more of a companion piece to it.As expected, there is some overlap in content (conveniently labeled on the menus as “Classic DVD Features”), but there is enough new goodies to warrant the upgrade, especially if you haven’t yet taken the Blu-ray plunge. (A two-disc standard DVDset will be released on November 24.)My one quibble with this latest edition of Snow White is its heavy reliance on the interactive functionality of Blu-ray. Sure, a lot of people love to dig into such capabilities, but an equal amount prefer to just sit back and watch, free of all the extra bells and whistles. An easy fix to balance things out here would have been to include the exceptional documentary “Still the Fairest One of All: The Making of Snow White” from the Platinum Edition, the one previous bonus that is sorely missed here.On the other hand, some of these bells and whistles are pretty cool, beginning with the “smart navigation” menus — embodied by a mirthful Magic Mirror — that “remembers” what you have watched and reminds you of features you many have missed. Plus, there’s even a game that is just as addictive as anything you’ll find online or on your nearest Xbox. But more on that later …Click here to continue reading my Toon Talk review of the new Snow White Blu-ray at LaughingPlace.com.[...]
The Latest on DVD: I Do, I Don't 2009-10-16T10:56:43.211-07:00 Sandra Bullock returns to typical terrain in the romantic comedy hit The Proposal, available on DVD and Blu-raytoday. She plays a Devil Wears Prada-esque book publisher who, upon threats of deportation to her native Canada, ropes her ambitious assistant Ryan Reynolds into a sham wedding to get her green card.Complications ensue when a by-the-book immigration officer (Denis O'Hare, who apparently is in everything these days) calls foul, prompting the faux lovebirds to fly to Reynolds' Alaskan hometown to prove the legitimacy of their pending nuptials. As is way-too-typical in movies like this, Bullock's ice queen is thawed in the wilds of Alaska, populated as it is with such quirky denizens as Betty White's gone-native grandmother and Oscar Nuñez (gay Oscar on The Office) as the town's sole male exotic dancer, Ramone. The plot hinges solely — and unbelievably — on that ol' rom com trope, the kiss of true love between two characters who hitherto loathed each other, and it's hard to buy that Bullock is such a dragon queen as well.Nevertheless, The Proposal benefits greatly from the charms of its leading couple, and the scene-stealing White is, as always, a hoot. And the Alaskan scenery looks great in high def.Blu-ray extras include a gag reel, deleted scenes and a wisely excised "alternate ending" that, if left intact, would have sent this one too far over the top to survive.[...]

Reel Thoughts Interview: Playwright Brings Kite Runner to the Stage 2009-10-16T10:56:43.449-07:00 It’s either brilliant or foolhardy to adapt a beloved novel like Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner to the stage. Playwright Matthew Spangler couldn’t resist the challenge, and the results have been a critical smash for the California professor.Co-produced with the San Jose Repertory Company, The Kite Runner is the story of an Afghan man who betrayed his best friend as a boy, then gets the chance “to be good again” years later by rescuing his former friend’s son. “It’s a story of immigration, and there aren’t a lot of those stories on the American stage,” Spangler said. “This one, of course, focuses on Afghan immigration to the California/San Francisco Bay area, but in a lot of ways, that story is universal no matter where you’re immigrating from.“I think this book is well positioned to counter some of the stereotypes that we might have of Afghanistan as Americans. Specifically the stereotype of Afghanistan as a war-torn land of poverty and terrorists,” he added.Spangler said the book shows Afghanistan with a pretty solid middle class, which has respect for education and egalitarian values. Many of these people immigrated during the Afghan war with the Soviet Union. “That was one thing that drew me to this,” Spangler said. “The other thing, on even a more basic level, is that this is a beautiful story of redemption. I found the book very moving. The main character does something at an early age that is horrible, and he regrets it, and the rest of his life is conditioned by that thing that he did when he was young, and then as an adult, he tried to set it right.”In the story, the protagonist fails to intervene when his young friend is raped by the neighborhood bully, then conspires to get the boy removed from his house (where the boy’s father works as a servant) to assuage his guilt.Spangler conceded that it’s a risk to adapt a piece where the protagonist behaves so badly. “The narrator is that protagonist, and he’s on stage for the full two and a half hours of the performance, so if the audience doesn’t go along with him, that’s a problem.” Spangler said the director, the actor and the writer worked together to find ways to allow the audience to empathize with him, even though in some ways he’s a despicable character for abandoning his friend. The challenge is to find ways to keep the audience on the character’s side.It helps that the narrator plays the character’s older self looking back, asking the audience’s forgiveness. “There’s something powerfully dramatic about that,” Spangler said. He praised Barzin Akhavan, who plays the older Amir, saying how lucky he and director David Ira Goldstein were to get him.Spangler said he is gratified to see how warmly audiences are responding to the piece, which he worried might be too dark. The film version of the book did court controversy with some LGBT audiences that felt that the villain was a stereotypical predatory gay man, but Spangler did not portray the character that way (the script for the play was completed before the film was released in 2007). The same-sex violation is shown to be a byproduct of prejudice and an act intended to humiliate.Despite its dark subject matter, the story’s main theme is Amir’s path to redemption. Audiences in Tucson and San Jose embraced the show, and given the timely nature of its setting, Arizona Theater Company audiences are sure to be enthralled as well when The Kite Runner opens tomorrow at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix.Interview by Neil Cohen, resident film critic of Movie Dearest and Phoenix's Echo Magazine.[...]

Reverend's Reviews: A Riveting Parade 2009-10-16T10:56:43.491-07:00 The Jason Robert Brown-Alfred Uhry collaboration Parade, which had a brief run on Broadway in 1998, is a true contemporary musical classic. That it hasn't yet been recognized as such by the general public is unfortunate, but the Center Theatre Group's riveting production playing now through November 15 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles may change things. The show has a widely-perceived deficit against it in that it isn't a work of splashy, feel-good spectacle. Inspired by the 1915 lynching of a Jewish man in Georgia, Leo Frank, who was accused of killing a teenage girl and the legal-political circus leading up to it, it's hard-hitting stuff. But Parade is brilliantly conceived and, under the care of the LA production's director-choreographer Rob Ashford, it is not only moving but ultimately redemptive.A great cast headed by out actor T.R. Knight, late of Grey's Anatomy, certainly helps. It includes Broadway vets Davis Gaines (who has played the title role in The Phantom of the Opera more than 2,000 times) and Charlotte d'Amboise, who is initially unrecognizable — to her credit — as Mrs. Phagan, mother of the murdered girl, Mary. Recent Tony winner Christian Hoff, who originated the role of Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys, also stars.Knight's performance is a revelation. He reportedly hasn't done a musical since he played a minor role in a high-school production of Camelot, yet he displays fine song-and-dance chops. Knight really hit his stride opening night during the courtroom number "Come Up to My Office," and his final duet with Lara Pulver, who plays Frank's wife Lucille, is heart wrenching.Speaking of Pulver, the British actress is both musically and dramatically exceptional. What's more, her Southern accent — often mangled by Brits (just listen to the London cast recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind if you don't believe me) — sounds authentic.Ashford's staging on the multi-level set is fine. Although Parade isn't a dance-heavy show, Ashford mines every opportunity for it. Particularly demanding and impressive are the paces he puts the cast (especially Michael Berresse, who plays Georgia's then-Governor, John Slaton) through during Act 2's "Pretty Music." Ashford knows this material well, having co-choreographed the original Broadway production, which was directed by Harold Prince.More local/regional performances of Parade have been popping up in recent years as theatre companies discover it. I encourage, and would love to require, everyone to seek out a production in your vicinity and see it. If you're in the greater LA area, though, be sure to catch Center Theatre Group's Parade before it passes by.For more information or tickets, please visit Center Theatre Group's website. Reverend’s Interview: Eating Out with Mink Stole 2009-10-16T10:56:43.538-07:00 Eating Out: All You Can Eat, opening in New York this Friday, Los Angeles on October 16 and expanding from there, is the third film in the gay comedy franchise originated by writer-director Q. Allan Brocka. It may begin with the funeral of a major character from the previous entry in the series, but don’t let that fool you into thinking the sequel is in any way a serious drama. As soon as actress Mink Stole opens her mouth to eulogize the deceased, fans of Eating Out and Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds will find themselves back in hilariously tasteless territory. Reprising her role as Helen from Eating Out 2, Stole plays a woman who is arguably a little too accepting of first her son’s and then her nephew’s homosexuality.“I was trying really hard to be a good gay mom in the second film,” the outspoken and delightful Stole told me in a recent phone interview. In the new sequel, Stole says her character “has embraced the gay lifestyle wholeheartedly; after all, they call me ‘the coolest mom in the world’ in the film!”Stole (who was born Nancy Paine Stoll in 1947) is best known for her work in virtually all the movies made by her longtime friend, gay filmmaker John Waters. She is considered one of the “Dreamlanders,” the name given to Waters’ ensemble of regular cast and crewmembers.“John and I first met through a mutual friend back in Provincetown in the 1960’s,” Stole explained. “Although we’re both from Baltimore, we lived in different neighborhoods and probably never would have met there.” Stole still lives in Baltimore, directly across the street from the house in which she was raised.I asked Stole whether she has a favorite role or film out of her extensive body of work with Waters. She replied: “I have several: Taffy Davenport in Female Trouble; Pink Flamingos I love because it was such a shocker and made such a statement; and I loved working with Kathleen Turner in Serial Mom.”Of her turn as prim and proper Dottie Hinkle in Waters’ cult fave Serial Mom, Stole says “It’s not every actor who gets to say to Kathleen Turner, ‘You’re a mother-fucking cocksucker’!” She still keeps in touch with Turner, and it is clear Stole thinks fondly of her former co-star.I had to inquire as to what Stole thinks of the phenomenal success Waters’ Hairspray has had, first as a well-received movie, then as a splashy Broadway musical, and finally as a big-budget movie musical. Stole played Corny Collins’ assistant, Tammy, in the original 1988 film.“I liked Hairspray a great deal and it’s so much fun, but I never thought it would have the life it has had. But then, I never thought any of the films we made would have the life they’ve had.”Other GLBT-interest films Stole has appeared in that weren’t directed by Waters include But I’m a Cheerleader, Leather Jacket Love Story, Splendor and Out at the Wedding. “I’m thrilled to have so many gay fans,” Stole told me. “We act to do good work, but our fans make the opportunities possible.”Expanding on the topic of homosexuality, Stole said, “I worry about young gay kids, so every time there is a message that it’s OK to be who you are, it’s a good thing.” It is this concern that led Stole to play the role of Helen in the Eating Out films. “I think it’s really important that the message be as loud and persistent as possible.”Eating Out: All You Can Eat centers on the efforts of young, new-to-town Casey (played by Daniel Skelton), Helen’s nephew, to win over the volunteer manager of the local Larry Craig LGBT Center (the gorgeous Chris Salvatore). Of course, it would[...]
