How To Produce Under Pressure Like A Concert Pianist

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 15:32:58 -0600

Last night I attended a performance by the Seattle Symphony of Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto. If you've ever seen the movie Shine, you know how daunting this piece is to a concert pianist. It's a 40-plus minute workout, consisting of 30,000 individual notes, all of which have to be performed-often at lightning speed-in a particular order; with nuance, dynamics, and passion; live; from memory; in front of a discerning audience of several thousand people, and an even more discerning orchestra and conductor.

Why Do We Overlook The Simple Answer?

Wed, 15 Nov 2017 07:08:52 -0600

I could kick myself. I love to do Sudoku, particularly the jigsaw puzzles. To complete them, I have to look at each section from every possible perspective. It is always a joy when the missing numbers are right there, in front of my eyes. The reason I could just kick myself is because my life would be so much easier and much less stressful if I only looked at every situation the same way. I would save myself so much wasted time and energy if I just realized that there is probably a simple answer. Technological issues are the worst, because I always assume that the underlying causes are much too complex for me to determine.

How To Keep From Crashing When The Engine Stops

Wed, 11 Oct 2017 15:16:07 -0500

The single-engine Cessna 172 was about 1,500 feet above the Pacific Ocean when that engine stopped. I still don't know why it stopped. All I know is that I was the pilot and the sole occupant of the plane. I had just taken off from a small airport in Western Washington. The pre-check had been routine. The takeoff had been uneventful. The sky was blue, the wind was calm. It was a beautiful day for flying.

Measurement Defines the Goal

Fri, 06 Oct 2017 08:14:13 -0500

Reichheld wrote, "what gets measured 'creates' accountability. With no standard, reliable metric for customer relationships, employees cannot be held accountable for them and so overlook their importance" (2006, p. 17). Instead of measuring the quality of our customer relationships, all we can measure is time and expense, which are inadequate descriptors. So while we can resolve to devote a particular amount of time to an activity there is no way to ensure that the time is well-spent.

Is Lack Of Preparation Adding To Your Pressure?

Wed, 04 Oct 2017 07:07:58 -0500

You've felt the pressure of the clock too, haven't you? The pitch meeting to the prospective client begins at 8:30am, and you have five minutes to make your case. Your negotiation in Hong Kong has to be completed-successfully-by 3pm on Thursday so you can make your flight to London. You have to be finished cleaning your house by 9:59am because the house cleaner gets there at 10. (Yeah, I know. I never quite got that one either.)

Why Not Use the Tools We Have?

Thu, 21 Sep 2017 07:32:16 -0500

We have professional tools and resources at our fingertips that we forget we have, so we neglect to use them and make our tasks unnecessarily more difficult. We are always hustling on to the next thing, assuming that someone else will have the answers if we can only find them, without recognizing that we might already have the tools we need.

Using Occam's Razor At Home

Sun, 25 Jun 2017 10:35:32 -0500

Yet unfortunately, I occasionally find that I ignore the principles that I know and teach others to follow! Take, for instance, Occam's razor. If only I had applied it in my own life, I would have avoided a lot of time, stress and expense.

Getting Over Excel Phobia

Sat, 24 Jun 2017 09:31:39 -0500

When I was in high school, I took a statistics class that, to this day, has left me in abject terror whenever I am faced with anything related to statistics. Our teacher decided that since we were an "honors" class, the best way for us to learn statistics was to find the errors in a statistics book. It didn't work, for obvious reasons. If you don't know what you are supposed to be looking at, how can you tell if it's wrong? What You Call "Practice" Might Be Hurting You

Wed, 11 Jan 2017 07:35:51 -0600

I used to play a lot of tennis. I was never terribly good at it. For example, some serves are referred to as a "weapon." Mine was referred to as a "gift." But what I lacked in quality, I made up for in quantity. I played a lot of tennis. I suppose I got incrementally better over time, but I never improved substantially. Why? Because I wasn't intentional about improvement. You've probably heard the phrase practice makes perfect. This isn't quite accurate, as we'll see shortly-but let's use it as a starting point. Practice makes perfect. Notice how you never hear the phrase repetition makes perfect. Repetition does not make perfect! Repetition merely reinforces whatever it is that you're repeating. In my case, I was continuously repeating-and therefore reinforcing-crappy tennis habits.
