In fact, for some of these songs, I'd never even seen the sheet music until I pulled up a chart on my iPhone seconds before playing the song live. Was I nervous? Nope. Did I feel pressure? Nope. Did I choke? Nope. Okay, so how is that possible? How is it possible that I wasn't nervous, didn't feel pressure, and didn't choke? It's not because I'm a brilliant keyboardist. I'm not.

Why Do We Overlook The Simple Answer?

Wed, 15 Nov 2017 07:08:52 -0600

I could kick myself. I love to do Sudoku, particularly the jigsaw puzzles. To complete them, I have to look at each section from every possible perspective. It is always a joy when the missing numbers are right there, in front of my eyes. The reason I could just kick myself is because my life would be so much easier and much less stressful if I only looked at every situation the same way. I would save myself so much wasted time and energy if I just realized that there is probably a simple answer. Technological issues are the worst, because I always assume that the underlying causes are much too complex for me to determine.

Measurement Defines the Goal

Fri, 06 Oct 2017 08:14:13 -0500

If you don't know what you are supposed to be looking at, how can you tell if it's wrong? I tell this story to explain how my phobia about statistics led to a phobia about Excel- because Excel uses statistical symbols and formulas.

What You Call "Practice" Might Be Hurting You

Wed, 11 Jan 2017 07:35:51 -0600

Because I wasn't intentional about improvement. You've probably heard the phrase practice makes perfect. This isn't quite accurate, as we'll see shortly-but let's use it as a starting point. Practice makes perfect. Notice how you never hear the phrase repetition makes perfect. Repetition does not make perfect! Repetition merely reinforces whatever it is that you're repeating. In my case, I was continuously repeating-and therefore reinforcing-crappy tennis habits.
