Ian Kinsler came in at the tail end of the Tigers' dynasty atop the American League Central after he established himself in Texas. He never got to see a Tigers postseason victory, and he ended his tenure at the beginning of a long-term rebuild. But with an All-Star selection, a Gold Glove and a Wilson Defensive Player of the Year honor, he made a major impact in four seasons on the Tigers.

Thu, 14 Dec 2017 13:12:48 EDT

The Tigers left the Winter Meetings on Thursday morning further along in their rebuilding project than they were when they checked into Disney's Swan and Dolphin Hotel and Resort on Sunday. It doesn't mean they've lessened the struggles ahead, but by adding to their stockpile of young talent, they've given themselves more options for the future.

Well-rounded Avila defined by formative years

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 16:24:20 EDT

Long before Al Avila ever dreamed of becoming a Major League general manager, he was an assistant baseball coach at tiny St. Thomas University in Miami. He was working under Paul Mainieri, who went on to earn national honors coaching at Notre Dame and LSU, and he was completing his education in one of the nation's few sports administration programs at the time.

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 15:31:57 EDT

Path shared by Morris, Trammell has sweet result

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 13:56:09 EDT

Before the phone calls that Jack Morris and Alan Trammell had waited a baseball lifetime to receive, there was a closed room, a rectangular table and 16 men discussing, deliberating, debating and after somewhere in the neighborhood of six hours, deciding how to cast their votes in the Baseball Hall of Fame's Modern Era ballot.

Leyland confident Gardenhire right for Detroit

Sat, 9 Dec 2017 13:10:00 EDT

Jim Leyland saw a little bit of himself in Ron Gardenhire, a scrappy player who had to pay his dues in the Minor Leagues and then coaching in the Majors before earning his chance to manage. Leyland saw how Gardenhire handled his players, got the most out of them, and handled the media. If Gardenhire ever left Minnesota, Leyland believed, he could be a kindred spirit to fans in Detroit.

Castellanos may be heart of order, Tigers in '18

Fri, 8 Dec 2017 00:00:01 EDT

Wed, 6 Dec 2017 17:22:24 EDT

Working with young players for the two-day camp was also maybe a glimpse of Lance Parrish's next task with the Tigers. It was an unexpected move for Parrish, who had been looking to move in the other direction, but it's a move he's embracing.

MLB Pipeline's Top 50 Draft prospects for 2018

Tue, 5 Dec 2017 12:08:54 EDT

For the first time in three years, the top spot on MLBPipeline.com's early Draft Top 50 list is not topped by a high school pitcher. It should come as no surprise that the top guy is still a pitcher, and one from the 2017 College World Series champion Florida Gators. Right-hander Brady Singer, who helped pitch them to that title as a sophomore, is the clear choice as the best overall talent in the 2018 Draft class.

Wed, 29 Nov 2017 16:38:36 EDT
