Hoffman sent to Triple-A as rotation battle heats up

The Rockies optioned right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman to Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday as they began narrowing the competition for the season-opening starting rotation. The Blue Jays' ninth overall pick in the 2014 Draft, and key to the deal that sent shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto, Hoffman went 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA in three official Cactus League games this spring.



Ynoa homers, Senzatela struggles on mound

Third baseman Nolan Arenado finished what had been a difficult World Baseball Classic with two singles in Team USA's 8-0 championship game win over Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The good news for Rockies lefty reliever Jake McGee, also a member of Team USA, was his tournament went well. Bad news was he threw one inning, with one hit and one walk, through the whole tournament.

Rockies manager Bud Black said Thursday that surgery on first baseman Ian Desmond's broken left hand went so well that Desmond could be back in the Rockies' lineup by mid April. Dr. Donald Sheridan conducted the operation in Scottsdale on Wednesday. Desmond was hit Sunday on the second metacarpal of the left hand by a pitch from the Reds' Rookie Davis during Sunday's game. The club didn't initially indicate a timetable, but now Black said it's looking like four to six weeks.



Oberg finds success in getting back to basics
