Grand opener: Padres slam reigning champs

Mon, 29 May 2017 21:38:21 EDT

Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks cruised through the Padres' lineup once on Monday afternoon. Then, in the fourth inning, Hunter Renfroe turned around a Hendricks fastball -- and the game -- in an instant. The Padres right fielder launched a grand slam into the left-field seats, turning a two-run deficit into a two-run lead and sending San Diego on course for a 5-2 series-opening victory over the Cubs at Petco Park.

Statcast of the Day: Don't run on Renfroe

Mon, 29 May 2017 22:24:06 EDT

Against most outfielders, Kyle Schwarber's second-inning fly ball would've easily plated Addison Russell and given the Cubs an early three-run lead over the Padres on Monday. Hunter Renfroe is not most outfielders.

Sun, 28 May 2017 21:22:16 EDT

Searching for a spark plug to ignite their dormant offense, the Padres received a boost from perhaps the most unlikely of candidates. Chase d'Arnaud, playing in just his fifth career game for the Friars, filled up the stat sheet in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Nationals.

Former Nat Stammen thriving in San Diego

Sun, 28 May 2017 13:32:31 EDT

Craig Stammen has dozens of cherished memories from the seven seasons he spent pitching with the Nationals. His last appearance is not one of them.

Pickoff perfectionist Richard utilizing move

Sat, 27 May 2017 20:49:35 EDT

On the mound, Clayton Richard is a perfectionist. That much holds true, even when he isn't throwing to the plate. The owner of one of the best pickoff moves in baseball, Richard again put it on full display Saturday afternoon, nabbing two over-aggressive Nationals baserunners.

Richard solid, but hitting woes persist in loss

Sat, 27 May 2017 21:24:28 EDT

In one of the most dominant outings of his career, Stephen Strasburg racked up a career high 15 strikeouts Saturday afternoon at Nationals Park as he led the Nationals to a 3-0 victory against the Padres.

Padres call up Cordero for center field duty

Sat, 27 May 2017 19:29:16 EDT

The Padres recalled Franchy Cordero, their No. 23 prospect, on Saturday as a replacement for injured center fielder Manuel Margot. In 42 games with Triple-A El Paso, Cordero was hitting .289 with an .869 OPS and seven homers.

Perdomo's outing evidence of progression

Fri, 26 May 2017 23:45:37 EDT

Coming off the worst start of his career, Luis Perdomo again did not have his best stuff Friday night. But over the past year, Perdomo has matured immensely as a pitcher. And in that sense, Friday's 5-1 loss to the Nationals offered a testament to how far he's progressed.

Injuries have decimated projected outfield

Fri, 26 May 2017 16:19:39 EDT

The Padres had a workable outfield plan developing in spring training. Rookies Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe would be the starters in center and right, respectively. Alex Dickerson and Travis Jankowski would primarily platoon in left with Jankowski also spelling both Margot in center and Renfroe in right.

Max Scherzer delivered another stellar performance Friday night, nearly finishing off a complete game as he dominated the Padres offense for 8 2/3 innings to lead the Nats to a 5-1 victory.

The soreness in Manuel Margot's right calf has not yet subsided, and the Padres center fielder was placed on the disabled list before Saturday's game against the Nationals. In his place, the club recalled outfielder Franchy Cordero.

Padres taking committee approach at closer

Fri, 26 May 2017 01:00:52 EDT

It's not rocket science, but it's not exactly the baseball norm either: The Padres will use their best relief pitcher in the highest-leverage situations, save opportunities be darned.

Renfroe's 440-ft HR caps Padres' comeback

Thu, 25 May 2017 00:30:38 EDT

An inning after the Padres completed a comeback from down four runs, Hunter Renfroe smashed a go-ahead homer into the second deck at Citi Field in the eighth that had a projected distance of 440 feet, according to Statcast™. That vaulted the Padres to a 6-5 win over a Mets club that, for most of the evening, seemed to have victory firmly in its grasp.

Sleight of Hand: Lefty pulls Houdini escape act

Thu, 25 May 2017 01:16:54 EDT

Brad Hand didn't know he'd be closing Wednesday night until the bullpen phone rang in the top of the ninth inning. The Padres left-hander certainly didn't take the easy route, loading the bases in the bottom of the frame before he recorded an out. But Hand struck out two Mets before getting Juan Lagares to fly out to right field, sealing a thrilling 6-5 victory at Citi Field.

Hedges' superb D goes beyond diving catch

Wed, 24 May 2017 19:20:29 EDT

Austin Hedges' brilliant diving catch Tuesday night might go down as the best defensive play made by a catcher this year. It's not often that a backstop, in full gear, engages in a face-first all-out dive. And that's not to mention the ground Hedges covered to reach the warning track in the first place.

Could Maurer, Hand be tandem closers?

Thu, 25 May 2017 14:38:12 EDT

I expect to see Brad Hand closing more games for the Padres.

Padres can't climb out of early hole vs. Mets

Wed, 24 May 2017 01:08:49 EDT

Matt Harvey's struggles this season have been both well-documented and well-defined. And while Harvey did little to boost his fading reputation on Tuesday, his teammates boosted him plenty with a seven-run first inning in the Mets' 9-3 win over the Padres at Citi Field.
