Slumping Seattle not using injuries as excuse

Wed, 24 May 2017 23:50:45 EDT

The Mariners may have one of the more injury-depleted rosters in baseball at the moment, but they believe that shouldn't stop them from being competitive every game. In Wednesday's 5-1 loss against the Nationals, Seattle was unable to climb out of yet another early deficit, getting shut out by Washington after the first inning. On the night, the offense was held to 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, including seven men left on base. The club has scored just one run in each of its last five games -- all losses.

Pagan's relief saves 'pen, gives confidence

Wed, 24 May 2017 00:42:16 EDT

The cost of having a starting rotation decimated by injuries is the trickle-down effect it can have on the bullpen. This is the reality the Mariners have been living in for the last few weeks, relying on inexperienced arms to give them length and keep the ever-evolving relief corps fresh. That hasn't always been easy, which is why rookie reliever Emilio Pagan's effort in Tuesday's 10-1 loss to the Nationals stood out to manager Scott Servais.
