Cubs get even at Fenway with a little help

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 20:41:49 EDT

A resilient Cubs offense grinded their way back from an early three-run deficit on Saturday and made a winner of John Lackey in his return to Fenway Park. Moments after Miguel Montero hit a game-tying homer in the top of the seventh, Kyle Schwarber's RBI single up the middle put the Cubs ahead for the first time during that crucial three-run rally, and the bullpen held it over the final three innings for Lackey in a 7-4 win over Boston.

Montero a calming presence on both sides

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 21:07:28 EDT

Before Saturday's game, Cubs manager Joe Maddon was talking about how important it was for players to avoid getting angry. Getting frustrated is understandable, but Maddon didn't want to see them mad. Then there's John Lackey.

Maddon preaches patience with Baez

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 15:59:36 EDT

Javier Baez was uncharacteristically out of position and missed a grounder on Friday night, and he also hasn't been as consistent at the plate, but Joe Maddon isn't worried. He's quick to point out Baez is young, as are the majority of the Cubs' hitters, and they will go through phases.

Son of Sox draftee, Bryant homers at Fenway

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 00:27:34 EDT

Kris Bryant had hit one time at Fenway Park when he was a collegian and playing in the Cape Cod League, but he didn't clear the Green Monster during that visit. Bryant did just that Friday. He launched his third home run of the season in the first inning, sending an 0-1 pitch from the Red Sox's Drew Pomeranz over the Monster.

Cubs can't complete rally for Arrieta in Boston

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 23:58:35 EDT

An electric atmosphere at sold-out Fenway Park made April feel like October, and the sea of blue shirts in the stands made it clear how many Cubs fans made the trek to Boston for this much-anticipated weekend series. But the Red Sox stood their ground on their home turf, utilizing a big burst of offense in the bottom of the first and a strong late-inning effort by the bullpen en route to Friday night's 5-4 victory over the defending World Series champions.

Arrieta settles, but 42-pitch 1st sets tone

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 00:46:45 EDT

It didn't take long to realize that Jake Arrieta was not going to have the same kind of success at Fenway Park on Friday night that he did in 2014, when he flirted with a no-hitter. The Red Sox roughed up Arrieta for five runs in the first inning en route to a 5-4 victory over the Cubs to start the Interleague series.

Epstein makes 1st Fenway trip as Cubs boss

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 20:46:09 EDT

He walked into a utility closet trying to get to the field from the visitor's clubhouse at Fenway Park, but Theo Epstein did eventually find his way. One could say the same about the path he's taken from the Red Sox to the Cubs, which Epstein, now president of baseball operations in Chicago, is reliving this weekend.

Schwarber the DH; Zobrist handles Monster

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 20:03:09 EDT

Kyle Schwarber was the designated hitter for the first game of the Cubs' Interleague series against the Red Sox, partly to give him a breather and also because Ben Zobrist is a little more familiar with how to deal with the Green Monster in left field at Fenway Park.

The last time the Cubs played in Boston was in 2014. Anthony Rizzo drove past Massachusetts General Hospital at the time and got a knot in his stomach, because that's where he began his treatment for cancer. He was diagnosed in 2008 while a Minor Leaguer in the Red Sox's organization.

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 01:00:28 EDT

Tyler Mahle's chances of throwing his second straight perfect game came undone just two batters into his start on Thursday. The Reds' No. 10 prospect still was plenty good, tossing six dominant frames to extend his scoreless innings streak to 19 2/3 for Double-A Pensacola.

Thu, 27 Apr 2017 00:03:50 EDT

Wed, 26 Apr 2017 00:16:49 EDT
