The University of North Dakota said Wednesday it would resume using its contentious Fighting Sioux nickname despite threats from the NCAA, marking the latest twist in a protracted fight about a name its critics consider offensive.

A state law that required the university to use the nickname and a logo that shows the profile of an American Indian warrior was repealed last year. But on Tuesday, supporters of the name filed petitions demanding that the issue be put to a statewide vote.

University president Robert Kelley said in a statement that the school decided to use the name and logo "to reaffirm our respect for the laws of the state and the processes guaranteed under the North Dakota Constitution."

The school had stopped using the name and logo when the law was repealed. The NCAA has told the university that continued use of the nickname and logo would expose the school to sanctions.

MLB: The Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Clayton Kershaw avoided a potentially contentious salary arbitration hearing by agreeing to a two-year, $19 million contract on Tuesday. Kershaw, 23, who was paid $500,000 in his Cy Young Award season last year, will receive $7.5 million next season in addition to a $500,000 signing bonus. He will earn $11 million in 2013.

The Miami Marlins' Emilio Bonifacio was awarded a $2.2 million salary by a three-person arbitration panel rather than the Marlins' offer of $1.95 million.

Shortstop Elvis Andrus and the Texas Rangers have finalized a $14.4 million, three-year contract that avoided salary arbitration.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed outfielder Ryan Ludwick to a one-year contract and lefthanded starter Jeff Francis to a minor league deal.
