Apple's iPad2 Announcement

Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:09:00 +0000

Todd Cochrane of Geek News Central talks about the iPad2 announcement from Apple in the latest eposide of his show. He talks about it being a so-so upgrade and why he will not upgrade.

I guess I'm an Apple fanboy because I think it's a great upgrade and will most likely purchase one when it's available March 11, 2011. The new features that won me over is the faster processor, faster graphics, build-in camera, and HDMI output with the ability to mirror the iPad's screen. I don't think this will be a great photo/video capture device with the built-in cameras, but I will use the front camera for conferencing.

I'll talk about this more on March 11, but in the meantime check out Todd's show and check out his website.

Thanks,

Tom

Heading to Vega (and CES)

Thu, 31 Dec 2009 19:55:00 +0000

It's been a busy few months and it's just about to get busier. I'm heading out next week to Las Vegas to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that's held every year in January. I've been to CES a few times and to Comdex more times than I can remember, but this is the first time I'm going to "work the show."

Working the show means we will be video interviewing as many companies as we can fit into our week-long schedule. There will be nine of us divided into two camera crews, including Todd Cochrane from Geek News Central, Andy McCaskey from SDRNews and Jeffrey from Geekazine. Our goal is to find interesting companies and do three to five minute video interviews for each. The interviews will be edited and posted on the internet as fast as we can make it happen. There will also be some streaming video (via Ustream.com) and back-channel videos posted.

This will be an interested event because video is beginning to make it's presence on the internet. Leo Laporte with his TWIT network is moving to video and I know Leo and his crew is going to CES to cover the show too. Todd Cochrane sees this shift to video and is gearing up to meet this new demand. Video coverage at CES is just one part of that change.

One big unknown is Internet access. I'm sure we won't be the only group covering the show and trying to push media to the web. Between cell phones, twitter/facebook, and streaming video, CES 2010 may bring down the Internet.

We do live in interesting (and exciting) times!

You can follow what's happening at the Geek News Central website. I will be posting some things on this blog and on my Twitter account: fogview.

Let me know if you're going to CES or know of anything that you would like to see us cover. You can email me a myfogview at gmail dot com.

73's and Happy New Years

Tom

Comcastic -- This is So Wrong on So Many Levels

Fri, 29 Aug 2008 14:48:00 +0000

The current buzz on the Internet is Comcast's formal policy about capping customer's Internet bandwidth at 250 GB/month (Comcast calls this excessive use). Customers who exceed this monthly bandwidth will get a warning notice and those that exceed it twice within a six month period will have their account canceled and banned from the Comcast service for one year. This policy goes into effect October 1, 2008. I have heard stories in the past few months about users having their Comcast service suddenly stop, forcing them to call customer service to hear that they exceeded their monthly bandwidth. I'm a Comcast user and have read through my customer agreements and didn't see anything about bandwidth limits. It does state that they can change the "terms of service" but that's it. Frank, who has @ComCastCares on Twitter, says that this policy has been in effect for a while now and Comcast is just making the number public after getting requests from Comcast users. Comcast is also saying that if you haven't received a warning under the current policy, you have nothing to worry about. Well, I'm worried for the following reasons: They are telling you that you can't exceed 250 GB/month but don't give you any way to tell what your current usage is. They did give some guidelines about what this limit means but that doesn't cut it in my book. It's like your electrical company saying you can't exceed a certain amount of electricity per month but not telling you how much you consume per month. Instead, they tell you how many lights, TVs, radios, and computers you could use that may exceed the limit. Comcast's answer is to search the Internet for bandwidth meters. I'm sure the general public is going to do this and install some unknown software on their system that has the potential to be a major spyware/virus source."If you haven't received a warning under the current policy, don't worry." This doesn't mean that my usage will not change in the future. Content is moving more and more to the Internet. Streaming video, streaming audio, movies, photo sharing all consume lots of bandwidth. Multiply this by the number of people in a household, and I could see you getting close to, or even exceeding the 250 GB cap. It goes back to the first point of Comcast not telling you what's you're consuming. Is there a conflict of interest here? Who are the users that are consuming high bandwidth? They are the ones who are consuming content on the Internet instead of Television. These users are also using the Internet to replace their telephone service through services like Skype and Vontage. What other services does Comcast offer: Television and Telephone. The last issue deals with shutting down your service if you exceed the cap. If I exceed the number of cell phone minutes, I get charged for the excess minutes. They don't threaten to shut off my service (or shut it off and force me to call customer service). Comcast has stated that there is no tiered service and users who exceed the cap twice in a six month period, will have their service terminated. What about moving these users to a higher data plan? Maybe they don't want the additional Internet revenue, but instead want to reverse the downward trend in their Television and Telephone business. In many areas of the country Internet users have very few choices for Internet providers and I'm afraid if Comcast is allowed to continue this policy, it will push back technology explosion we are seeing now. I'm involved in what some are calling "new media" and that would not be possible without the Internet and the ability to consume/deliver high bandwidth con[...]

Fogview 45: New Media Expo?

Thu, 28 Aug 2008 01:22:00 +0000

Welcome to the Fogview Podcast In this show I talk about the Olympics, my Half Marathon run, New Media Expo and an update on my failing iMac. As always I update you with technical news and tips and play some great podsafe music. Try GoToMeeting for 30 days! Visit www.GoToMeeting.com/podcast to start your free trial today. Download Podcast FV-045.mp3 On Today's Show (length: 39:15) Intro music : "Fogview Intro" by Geoff Smith Half Marathon Run in San Francisco Earlier this month I ran one half of the SF Marathon. I woke up at 3 am and headed to SF for a 6:05 run. Runners were grouped in waves to avoid traffic jams and to control the flow over the Golden Gate Bridge. The run was great and the highlight (as always) is running over the Golden Gate Bridge. Next up is the Silicon Valley Marathon at the end of October. Summer Olympics — pictures Opening ceremonies were great and I was amazed at the technology used: underwater cameras; super imposed images showing world record timing. GoToMeeting Ad (06:45) Running can slow aging process This research study followed a group of 500 runners (starting at age 50) for 20 years and found that running allowed them to live longer and reduced the risk of disease.  The study didn’t find any increase in total knee replacements as scientists originally feared. New Media Expo  — review The show was held in Las Vegas this year and some said it was smaller and lacked the excitement of previous shows. I went last year but didn’t go this year because I was afraid the show would be lost in the big city and limit the ability to network and see the people that are important to the podcasting community. Leo Laporte did go and did two days of streaming live on TwitLive.TV with great interviews with podcasters. Music: “My Monkey” by Jonathan Coulton Jonathan is know for his song “Code Monkey” and was a database programmer before doing his music full-time. He quit his job and set a goal to write one new song a week. Microsoft Hires Seinfeld for Ads Microsoft is losing in the “ad wars” with Apple so it’s going to start it’s own series of ad starting with Jerry Seinfeld. So, is this going to be a commercial about nothing? Seinfeld will team up with Bill Gates in some of the commercials. If they are trying to improve their image, why have Bill in the commercials? iMac Shut Down Problem — update I’ve been having problems with my almost-a-year-old iMac shutting down without warning. It generally happens when I’m editing in iMovie or in iDVD burning a disk. I took the computer into the local Apple store twice now. They couldn’t duplicate the problem but they changed out the power supply and logic board on the last visit. I have my fingers crossed that it fixed the problem. The machine gets so hot and I’m afraid that is causing the problem. I purchased Apple Care as additional insurance. Tech tip: Get rid of your (old) USB card readers!  Older USB card readers are slow (USB 1.1 vs. 2.0): 12 mb/sec vs 480 mb/sec. (1.5 MB/sec vs. 60 MB/sec). If you are using older USB card readers on a newer computer, you’re wasting a lot of time waiting for your transfers to finish. My suggestion is to get rid of your old USB card readers and purchase a USB 2.0 reader. This Week in Photography TWIPPHOTO.com  This is a great podcast about photography from Alex Lindsay and Scott Bourne. Show #44 has an interview with David Griffin, Director of photography at National Geographic and has some great insights to how they made the switch f[...]

VidBlaster Pro Demo Video

Fri, 08 Aug 2008 15:37:00 +0000

Here is a screencast demo I did for VidBlaster Pro. VidBlaster is a great way to create a short video or stream your video live on Ustream and other live streaming sites. VidBlaster supports multiple cameras and allows you to intermix live video with pre-recorded video and audio clips.

Take a few minutes and check out demo. You can find more information at www.vidblaster.com

One additional note. You can download the trial version of VidBlaster and try it out for free. You can create unlimited length videos and the only difference from the registered version is a small “trial” bug in the upper corner of the video output.

The Microsoft Zune -- A Great iPod Ad

Fri, 16 Nov 2007 02:49:00 +0000

Last Tuesday Microsoft released the Zune 2 devices in 80 GB, 8 GB, and 4 GB versions. Below is the front page of this week’s Target ad showing the flashed-based Zune device (4 and 8 GB).

Which item would you pick, the Zune (on the left) or the iPod Touch (on the right)? Did you even notice the Zune? (I thought it was the last generation iPod Nano until I took a closer look.)

I know there’s a $150 price difference between the two but that issue is answered when you turn the page.

(image)

This is what you see on the inside page. A nice ad telling you the iPod makes the perfect gift. So where’s the Zune? If I didn’t know better I would think this whole thing was an Apple ad and they included the Zune for comparision purposes.

(image)

The Microsoft Zune is so far behind the iPod in Marketing and sales, you would think Microsoft would pay to make a splash for the release of the Zune 2. I bet many won’t even notice the Zune but will notice the iPod Touch on the front page and the new iPod Nano and iPod Classic on the second page.

I paid $250 for my first generation 30 GB Zune over a year ago so I’ve been watching Microsoft and were they were going with the Zune. Where they went was reducing my Zune by $100. They finally released a product that competes with the last generation iPods but I don’t expect many buyers to get excited about this device and ads like this doesn’t help either. At least they provided the loyal first gen Zune users with a firmware upgrade so they could experience the new Zune 2 user interface.

Before this year I’ve never owned an iPod (or any Apple product for that matter) so I was really hoping Microsoft would make the Zune a success. I recently purchased an iPod Nano and iPod Touch because the Zune just didn’t do what I wanted. Time will tell if Microsoft can convince buyers that the Zune 2 is as sexy and cool as the iPod.

I’ve downloaded the new Zune Desktop software and upgraded the firmware in my older Zune and I plan to write up my experiences. I’ve also talked about my initial reaction on my last podcast and will talk more about it soon. I’ll let you know about the new Zune experience and how it compares to the iPod.

More to come. Stay tuned.

Zooomr Up and Running with Stickers

Sun, 17 Jun 2007 01:53:00 +0000

(image)

I’ve blogged before about Zooomr and the problems it had with the re-launch of Zooomr Mark III but I’m happy to report it’s now up and running. Granted there still are a number of features not yet working (like SmartSets) but the site is stable and users are uploading photos and exploring Zooomr’s new features. Check out the Discovery 100 feature of Zooomr where it shows the best pictures of the past hour, day, week, and year.

To help spread the word Randy Carranza (randyman) has printed up some Zooomr sticker (see above photo) that you can order and paste wherever you like. He has started a Zooomr group (StickerWalking) where users can post photos of their pastings. You can find more information about ordering the Zooomr stickers here.

You can also checkout my photos on Zooomr here.

Zooomr Mark III Launch Video

Wed, 06 Jun 2007 02:07:00 +0000

This is a video of the first attempt to re-launch Zooomr  Mark III. This was recorded on the Zooomr Ustream.tv feed. At this launch attempt the Zooomr site was only up for 20 minutes before it crashed and burned. The site finally re-launched (the second time) on Saturday, May 2, 2007. Zooomr is running a little slow but Kris Tate and Thomas Hawk are slowly getting out the bugs.

You can watch this 17:08 minute video here or watch it full screen here (click on the Full Screen link). If you want to see the Zooomr chat room text you will need to view the full-screen version of the video.

The Zooomr Ustream feed stopped right before the Zooomr launch so the video shows the minutes leading up to the launch and after the launch. Sorry for the audio quality in this video.

Why Apple vs. Microsoft?

Sat, 12 Aug 2006 00:26:00 +0000

Apple's announcements at last Monday's WWDC generated a lot of press about OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and Vista, and which one was better. I thought David Pogue's article in the NY Times times ("Getting Hung Up on the Apple-Microsoft War") did a good job summarizing the key points.

+++++

"Followers of both camps, in other words, can save themselves a lot of ulcers if they just acknowledge a few facts:

* Microsoft gets a lot of ideas from Apple; Apple also gets ideas from Microsoft. It doesn't matter; the most expensive lawyers in Silicon Valley have established that it's all perfectly legal.

* Microsoft has won the market-share war, because it dominates in corporations.

* Both companies are profitable and have very long futures ahead of them.

* If market share were measured by individual buying decisions (rather than quantity of computers), Apple's rank would be much higher.

* Even if the grand prize for the "war" is individuals, families and small businesses, the perception of a much bigger war is useful; Windows Vista and Mac OS X Leopard may in fact be on completely different playing fields, but they're both looking like the best versions ever."

+++++

I'm a Windows XP user and have never used a Mac but after all the security issues I see on Windows I see myself thinking about the Mac more and more. I'm getting more into media and I know the Mac OS handles that must better than Windows.

At lunch today I went to the bookstore and picked up a copy of "Switching to the Mac" so ... Stay tuned.

A Mid-Week Update

Wed, 19 Jul 2006 06:56:00 +0000

Just an update about the last podcast and leaving comments on this website.

1. Thanks to Jack for the correct link to the Daily Giz Wiz podcast that I mentioned in episode #9.

2. Jack and others also pointed out that there is a problems leaving comments on this site if you're using the Firefox browser (ver. 1.5). I found that you have to submit the comment twice (entering the security number both times) before it saves the comment. I've contacted Libsyn (the host of this site) and they are aware of the problem but don't have a solution yet.

Update: I've joined the Blubrry ("e"-less fruit) network. Take a look at Blubrry.com to find great podcasts and interact with both podcasters and listeners. I'll talk more about Blubrry on my next podcast.

Thanks and have a great week.

Hello from Gnomedex (Seattle)

Sun, 02 Jul 2006 17:27:00 +0000

 Hi Everyone,

It's been a while since I've done a podcast or even a blog post. I've been busy with work, vacation, and more work. This past weekend I attended the "geek fest" called Gnomedex in Seattle. I had a great time and plan to share a summary of the conference and my thoughts and views in upcoming blogs and podcasts.

An interesting speaker that did make the front page of the Seattle PI newspaper was Senator John Edwards. He had some interesting things to say on both politics and technology. The Senator claims he came to listen to us and educate himself about issues surounding the internet. Stay tuned.

I want to thank our conference hosts: Chris and Ponzi for putting on a great conference. I also want to give out special thanks to Jack B. and Janet.

Talk to you soon.

Tom

Hi,

This is a special edition of my Podcast (length 21:22) talking about RFID tags and viruses. This was a big news story late last week and I wanted to give my opinion of the information since I've worked with RFID tags.

If you're not technical and get bored easy, this may not be a good podcast to listen too. You can listen to my latest podcast (show #5) or my first podcast if you are new to podcasting.

Thanks for stopping by and please take a listen.

Mid-Week Update

Thu, 16 Mar 2006 07:35:00 +0000

I just thought I would update you with a few things happening this week. I mentioned in my last podcast that we had some strange weather here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The picture on the right is Mt. Diablo and was taken from my bedroom Monday morning. I know snow is not rare in the winter time but it is around here. Over the weekend they had snow on the Santa Cruz beach which I've never heard of before.

Adam Curry played my audio feedback on this Daily Source Code #353. I sent him feedback about the Podshow Music Network. He played the audio clip near the end of his show (49:46).

Speaking of Podshow, it sounds like they are getting ready to open the network for businesss and let podcasters and listeners into the network. This should happen next week and I hope they enable the purchasing of songs too (typicaly 99 cents and no DRM).

Have a great week and I'll talk to you on my next podcast (this weekend).

Tom
