Colorado jail deaths doubled from 2011 to June of 2015

The number of people who died in Colorado's jails more than doubled in four years, following a national trend of a rising death toll among inmates in city and county jails across the country. Jail deaths in Colorado grew from 11 inmates in 2011 to 24 in 2015, according to data compiled by The Denver Post .

CU doctor appointed to oversee troubled state facility for intellectually disabled in Pueblo

A University of Colorado physician with experience in caring for adults with intellectual disabilities will serve as an independent monitor at a Pueblo facility for people with disabilities, state officials announced Friday. Dr. Barry Martin, a primary care doctor at the CU School of Medicine in Aurora, will review "critical incident" reports at the Pueblo Regional Center and make recommendations for improvement.

Advocates for repealing the death penalty in Colorado are back with a legislative effort for the first time in four years, motivated by their belief the issue is gaining traction in battleground and red states. The Better Priorities Initiative of Colorado hopes to build off of work in the right-leaning state of Nebraska, where the legislature there repealed the death penalty in 2015, despite opposition led by Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts.
