Sun, 31 Jul 2016 19:00:00 EDTMicrosoft took another step toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this gives Microsoft. Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly different for some of the configurations -- I can't tell you how many nights I have lost sleep because of environments being slightly different! Development and hosting are two completely different things. What Microsoft did is one-upped Google and Amazon.

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 19:15:00 EDTManaged IT services wasn't even a phrase until the early 2000s and, today, there are over 75,000 IT service providers in North America alone. By 2020, there are going to be 50 billion connected devices, and managed IT services might cease to be a phrase again. Unless the MPSs adapt to the new, connected world, we are going to see diminishing returns in that space. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Kirill Bensonoff, CEO of Unigma, will discuss the different opportunities IoT will create for MSPs and IT service providers – from on-site services, to monitoring, managing and consulting.

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 13:00:00 EDTTwo-thirds of organizations implementing hybrid cloud report they’re already gaining competitive advantage from their hybrid environments and are nearly three times as likely to use it to assemble data assets or monetize data, according to findings released by IBM (NYSE: IBM). With a hybrid cloud approach, organizations can be selective about when to use cloud and when to use traditional IT infrastructure – delivering the best functionality while meeting speed and flexibility needs, as well as resiliency, security and regulatory requirements.
Sat, 05 Mar 2016 11:00:00 ESTThere is little doubt that Big Data solutions will have an increasing role in the Enterprise IT mainstream over time. Big Data at Cloud Expo - to be held June 7-9, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY - has announced its Call for Papers is open. Cloud computing is being adopted in one form or another by 94% of enterprises today. Tens of billions of new devices are being connected to The Internet of Things. And Big Data is driving this bus. An exponential increase is expected in the amount of information being processed, managed, analyzed, and acted upon by enterprise IT. This amazing is not part of some distant future - it is happening today. One report shows a 650% increase in enterprise data by 2020. Other estimates are even higher. Big Data at Cloud Expo New York is the place where you can see the technologies and use cases that are delivering Big Data to enterprise IT.
Sat, 27 Feb 2016 18:45:00 ESTCIOs and those charged with running IT Operations are challenged to deliver secure, audited, and reliable compute environments for the applications and data for the business. Behind the scenes these tasks are often accomplished by following onerous time-consuming processes and often the management of these environments and processes will be outsourced to multiple IT service providers. In addition, the division of work is often siloed into traditional "towers" that are not well integrated for cross-functional purposes. So, when traditional IT Service Management (ITSM) meets the cloud, and equally, DevOps, there is invariably going to be conflict.

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 21:00:00 EDTThe OpenStack cloud operating system includes Trove, a database abstraction layer. Rather than applications connecting directly to a specific type of database, they connect to Trove, which in turn connects to one or more specific databases. One target database is Postgres Plus Cloud Database, which includes its own RESTful API. Trove was originally developed around MySQL, whose interfaces are significantly less complicated than those of the Postgres cloud database. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Fred Dalrymple, product manager for EnterpriseDB's Postgres Plus Cloud Database, addressed the issues encountered in using Trove to abstract a complicated cloud database, including gaining access to database functionality not native in the standard abstraction, providing portability for the database interface into non-OpenStack contexts, and preventing the database from being commoditized by abstraction.

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 18:15:00 EDTEnthusiasm for the Internet of Things has reached an all-time high. In 2013 alone, venture capitalists spent more than $1 billion dollars investing in the IoT space. With “smart” appliances and devices, IoT covers wearable smart devices, cloud services to hardware companies. Nest, a Google company, detects temperatures inside homes and automatically adjusts it by tracking its user’s habit. These technologies are quickly developing and with it come challenges such as bridging infrastructure gaps, abiding by privacy concerns and making the concept a reality. These challenges can’t be addressed without the kinds of agile software development and infrastructure approaches pioneered by the DevOps movement.
Tue, 12 Aug 2014 11:00:00 EDTAs an enterprise and software architect the one thing I hate most about my job is documentation, yet the importance of doing documentation on sizable projects is what I find myself preaching about the most. One reason I understand the importance of documentation is that I came from an electronic engineering background. As an electronic engineer 93% - 97% of my time was consumed doing proof of concepts and documentation. Almost all of that time was documentation.

Sat, 02 Aug 2014 14:15:00 EDT“At Cloud Expo in NYC last week I sat in on the Internet of Things power panel and then presented about how to monetize the Internet of Things. The room was packed, standing room only and I stuck around for a full 30 minutes afterwards answering questions before I had to tear myself away. Wow, I have to say I’ve never seen so much buzz about anything. And this isn’t my first rodeo. The interest in all things IoT is nothing short of amazing, and we’ve only just begun. Take a look!”

Mon, 26 May 2014 11:00:00 EDTAdopting an Application Performance Management (APM) strategy will help you manage the quality of the Customer Experience. The challenge is that APM has evolved into a mosaic of monitoring tools, analytic engines, and event processors that provide many solutions to different problem sets. When you step back and look at the big picture it all comes into focus, but when you’re trying to rationalize one technology over another, things aren’t so clear at close range. Product overlaps, ongoing costs, and ownership come into question, and then someone will eventually ask why so many tools?
