Um...yes? :ninja:

Um... probably not. You'd probably be better off playing what you already have or finding something different. I mean I recently picked up Pandemic Iberia, but I don't have Pandemic (because I am not a huge fan of it). I don't really see the need to buy more 'editions' of the same game since the money would be better off spent on something more original.

One of my favorite 2 player games. The problem I can see you having is that if you are not playing to be competitive you'll probably play it a few times and then never again. The reasoning is that once you've played it twice you will most likely have seen all the cards with rule-breaking powers. Third and fourth play you'll get used to the combos and knowing what works. By the fifth time playing you'll have a good idea of what correct play is and then it comes to down to luck and sticking to perfect play.

Found it! It was in a geekmail, so I'll repost it here. My question is below his answer.

ShaunGamer wrote:

Hi Mo,

I will try to explain it ...

Card = Forward
1d6 (2) = Infantry > GEV > Armor
1d6 (5) = 2:1

Movement you got right

Priority you got right - attack infantry first, then GEV, then Armor.

Strength is the Ratio - 2:1 (Not very clear ... I realize now)

The Ogre will try to use weapons to achieve the desired ratio.
In the above example, it will use two Antipersonal weapons per Infantry, so that it gets the 2:1 ratio.
If it has an odd number of Antipersonal weapons then it would use the last one at 1:1 odds

Another example are:
Two Strength 3 Secondary weapons to attack a Defence 2 GEV
Note you get 3:1 odds (Str 6 to Def 2) but you have to use both weapons because you cannot use the 1:1 odds.
If you had only one Secondary weapon left then you could fire at 1:1 odds

This is a bit hard to explain in writing but I hope it helps!

Cheers Shaun

mo7189 wrote:

Hey, Shaun.

A couple of dumb questions, please.

I tried out the solo Ogre cards you posted to the forum. I have the pocket edition; not that it matters that much. Anyway, I draw a card and roll two dice as such:

Card = Forward
1d6 (2) = Infantry > GEV > Armor 1:1
1d6 (5) = Strength of 5

I get the movement - go forward.

I get the priority - attack infantry first, then GEV, then Armor.

What is the 1:1 ratio mean? Does that mean all Ogre attacks are at a 1:1 ratio no matter what the actual ratio is? I'm lost.

And what does Strength 5 mean? Do I use all weapons up to an attack value of 5? Or only use weapons that are Attack-5 (which there are none on a Mk.III, so use the Attack-4 weapon only)? Again, I'm a bit lost.

Whenever you have time to offer some help would be appreciated. No hurry!

Thanks.
Mo

I like Arkham Horror with 2 players, but each player use 2 characters each. I also like to play london and Through the ages as a 2 player.

for 3 players, The Queen Necklace MUST be played with 3 players. 2 and 4 don't work well for me. Clank! also works well for 3, Trajan, Tzolkin...

For 4 player, I would say, Tribune, Shogun, Gang of Four (of course) Powergrid, Rise of Empire, Galaxy trucker... 7 wonders.

I rarely play with 5 or more, but usually it's a group of non-players, so we play Ticket to ride, dixit and other light or party games.

He did it again here and had no trouble understanding and remembering and using properly the strengths of different units and terrain and other items on the board. We played the Liberation of Paris with me as the Axis and he as the Allies as it is supposed to favor the Allies quite a bit and I still won, but it was pretty close. He wants to play that same round again with each of us on the opposite side of the board. So, we'll do that. Good stuff and I'm definitely enjoying this game.

Thanks for giving me your current games count.

Your math is interesting but I cannot figure out what H=25 means.

H-Index. Multiple plays, x games played x times each. It's a self imposed condition that this year, I won't buy any new games (barring three exemptions) unless I reach H = 25.

So, this challenge is very supportive of that goal.

PS my math is highly questionable since it's a specific area where I'm often told of my mistakes.

Onra

Ronnie,

Okay, I listened to Onra last week, and I've been listening to the Sound Defects tonight. I like it! I didn't know that this style had a name (Low Fi). There is another song that might be counted in this style that I've listened to for a few years now that I think you might like called "Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth"

I usually don't really pay attention about upcoming games. I mostly look at games that have received many reviews, where the art is available and the idea of the gameplay is fully available. If i get interested (or if someone recommend to me  ), then I will consider buying.

My exceptions are my 2 KS. Planetarium is shipping now, as originally expected, but Massive Darkness is delayed until this summer (instead of March). No biggy I guess.

This was likely one of my Top-10 boardgaming experiences in my life.

Gosh!!

Well, I'm glad that I was there!

Great write up! It was a fantastic game. This was only my second time playing. I normally don't do this, preferring to let discovery take its course, but I did mention my experiences to Dimitri, hoping that it might ease the learning curve a bit. I'd have to say, he played quite a game!

I generally feel that we played the game very well. No big mistakes or suboptimal play. Well, I probably made some bad choices, but I only see that in retrospect. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure what I would do differently. The game simply has a great balance. Almost just unbelievable balance, given how different the sides are. Moreso even than WotR, which is saying an awful lot! That game has exquisite balance.

I gambled. I had not generated enough forces to sustain the assault, so I sent the boys forward and left stuff unguarded. I paid the price for that. That's really all there is to it. On the flip side: poor Thorin! He really took one for the team. I had incredible luck with Bolg at the Front Gate, and Thorin didn't stand a chance. Still it wasn't enough to carry the day. Brave sacrifice! I can't wait to play again!!

I'd sign up for that trip to Mars.

About 7 years ago I did some analysis work on body fluids collected from the cosmonauts who were training for the Mars 500 project. Basically, they lived in isolation for 500 days as the first stage in researching the effect on human health of long term isolation. They lived in a system of chambers like this one:

We analyzed blood and urine samples taken over the course of this experiment. The first study was inconclusive. They basically just learned what to do and not to do on studies of this magnitude. And it only took 500 days of isolation to figure that out!

"Well boys, we're going to have to repeat this..."

Aaaaaaaaaand, I'm out.

But I digress... Ironically, given my fear of heights, I would probably opt for a trip up Everest. There is something fascinating in taking myself with my own two feet into the margins of the next layer of the atmosphere.

My next choice would be hang gliding.

I've played all of them, and the most 'Lovecraftian' games are the new Arkham Horror card game and, especially, Mythos Tales. Fighting otherworldly beasts (and winning!), while fun, has little to do with the stories. Mythos Tales has some genuinely creepy moments, and I highly recommend it to fans. Just make sure to download the errata before playing.

Yeah, Mythos Tales is excellent. I agree that AH doesn't "feel" like a Lovecraftian story, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to play.
