And yours!! I sincerely appreciate the help of this community.
I love wordpress and was starting to bang my head against the wall.
I do have a new issue (archive related as well) but will start a new thread for that one as it really is different.

Good to know that it worked out for you finally atmasphere. The line breaks/problems with ftp uploading must be the reason why it did not work so far. I admire your persistence.

Thanks to some help in the irc channel last night and an email I received an appropriate .htaccess file. I'll post the text below, but just a fair warning, when I cut and pasted it, it failed. When I used the email attachment or perhaps if you just retype this it will work.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /wp/
RewriteRule ^archives/([0-9]{4})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9a-z-]+)?/?([0-9]+)?/?$ /wp/index.php?year=$1&monthnum=$2&day=$3&name=$4&page=$5 [QSA]
RewriteRule ^archives/category/?(.*) /wp/index.php?category_name=$1 [QSA]

Hello,
I have the same problem ... I want my permalinks to be like this:
/archives/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%.php
But now the archives links don't work. What can I do to solve this problem?
Thanks for help!
Toaster

OK - I just blew everything out and re-installed. Nothing - same issue.
Is it possible that something is wrong in my DB? Where would I begin to even check this?

Pair Networks says mod_rewrite is active...
I've deleted the archives directory as well. It does not exist on the new or original install.

carthik on "urgent archive assistance"

Tue, 13 Apr 2004 16:13:17 +0000

From his phpinfo.php file, mod_rewrite is loaded.
I think the archives dir is deleted, since /archives/ returns a 404 error.
Puzzling.

my archives are also hamstrung by this as the previously entered URLs which are findable, cannot be linked to.

Is there anything anyone else might recommend here? This is quite frustrating...

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Mon, 12 Apr 2004 06:13:42 +0000

cut and pasted it in, overwriting the previous attempts, but nothing...
still file not found, when changed from the default.
argh!!

carthik on "urgent archive assistance"

Mon, 12 Apr 2004 01:38:25 +0000

The same problem occured to me in the beginning and then, I got a solution from the forums, so here goes.
Try

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /wp/
RewriteRule ^archives/category/?(.*) /wp/index.php?category_name=$1 [QSA]
RewriteRule ^archives/([0-9]{4})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9a-z-]+)?([0-9]+)?/? /wp/index.php?year=$1&monthnum=$2&day=$3&name=$4&page=$5 [QSA]

That is, swap the order of the two rewrite rules, and remove the $ from between the first and second parts of the second rewrite rule after swapping.
Please use the code as I have made it out, and do let me know when it works ;)

I've tried a variety of things with the permalink structure and anything beyond the default seems to break.

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sun, 11 Apr 2004 08:47:48 +0000

One more thing which I am noticing now that the permalink structure is deactivated... my RSS feed no longer works as that was also effected by the link naming.
How can I get this to work again? I really want to use the nice name url...

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 22:35:25 +0000

I reverted back... redid the permalink stuff... dead.
Not really sure why this won't work.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /wp/
RewriteRule ^archives/([0-9]{4})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9a-z-]+)?([0-9]+)?/?$ /wp/index.php?year=$1&monthnum=$2&day=$3&name=$4&page=$5 [QSA]
RewriteRule ^archives/category/?(.*) /wp/index.php?category_name=$1 [QSA]

I love finding bugs...
I was shooting for this :
/archives/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%
If I switch back, do I risk losing anything?

I believe I am running the daily 4/8
Currently I have the format for permalinks "off" which gets them as the ?p=ID

Alex King on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 15:23:07 +0000

What version are you using?
What is the format you've chosen for your permalinks?
What are your permalink settings?

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 14:42:07 +0000

Thanks for stepping up!!
What would you like to know?
If I use any mod-rewrite options, my archives, categories and permalinks all break.
If I leave mod-rewrite off, all that stuff works, but the urls are not what I would really like to have. Though working is better than not.

Alex King on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 14:37:31 +0000

Can you explain in detail how you have it set up now and what isn't working? I'm happy to help, but you have to give more information.

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 14:11:42 +0000

I can only get the postID - default to work. No rewrite rules are working and (as I think you will recall) that was key in the switch over from MT, not too mention a much nicer way to leave the links.

Alex King on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 14:04:11 +0000

So it's fixed now? I don't understand this last post...

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 13:56:32 +0000

OK - disabled... erased and said update. the basic links now work including archives!
trying again... does not work with an .htaccess file and the re-write options included.

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 13:51:02 +0000

I currently have no .htaccess and no archive folder and nothing is working.
I am not sure how else to disable mod_rewrite... do I just select postID?

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 13:46:55 +0000

I did create the folder... after it was not working I thought I'd give that a go...
I'll kill the .htaccess and try again. Had not thought to try that

markku on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 11:58:10 +0000

You are using a nightly, right? This can be very confusing, since nightlies do change a lot. Try disabling mod_rewrite first, meaning, don't use the clean url options in WP, then remove or rename your .htaccess file. That should help isolate the problem.

Alex King on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 10:42:14 +0000

Why did you create an 'archives' folder? That is probably the problem, it interferes witht he mod_rewrite rules. I imagine it was working before you did that?

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 09:50:52 +0000

no permalink is working!!

atmasphere on "urgent archive assistance"

Sat, 10 Apr 2004 09:33:29 +0000

Just hopinng someone will see this post and help me...
Here's what I've got in .htaccess... I just created an archives folder within /wp and set it to 777. Nothing but file not found for any archive.
RewriteEngine On

RewriteRule ^archives/author/(.*)/(feed|rdf|rss|rss2|atom)/?$ /wp/wp-feed.php?author_name=$1&feed=$2 [QSA]
RewriteRule ^archives/author/?(.*) /wp/index.php?author_name=$1 [QSA]
RewriteRule ^archives/([0-9]{4})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([_0-9a-z-]+)?([0-9]+)?/?$ /wp/index.php?year=$1&monthnum=$2&day=$3&name=$4&page=$5 [QSA]

Other than the links on my home page the archives are dead. I've entered info on this before here - http://wordpress.org/support/3/4005
but I was just checking my site traffic and realized that external links in are not found. This are for posts I'd written in MT and imported as well as posts that just no longer appear on my first page.
The site is - http://www.atmasphere.net/wp archive links are on the right and don't work. If you search, you'll get results within the past two months but not through ALL my posts which you should and used to get.
help, please!
