Cherrypicking

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 17:15:37 +0000

It will be cherry-picking time for Bath and Gloucester when they meet on Friday night. Gloucester will want to pick both their team and their targets carefully. Second in their pool, they stand a chance of success in the Anglo Welsh Cup, but must balance that tournament against the Premiership and Europe. Still in touch with the leading group, they could force a way into the Premiership Top 6 and top flight European rugby for next season. In the ECC, as seed number two, they have a home quarter final and realistic ambitions of silverware. They must now pick who to play and who to rest for the visit to the Rec. Bath’s hopes of AWC progress are theoretical only and selection options will be restricted by international squad calls. Their picks are likely to be with rest in mind, to preserve key players for more significant tasks – in the European Challenge Cup and Premiership. As well as squad players, Friday may see the inclusion of returners from injury. Some of these – such as David Denton - will want to put their hands up for international recognition, while others, perhaps Sisi, Wilson, Hastings or Clark will be looking at contract renewal. Adding some spice to the mix is the fact of a home tie in a derby with history. Third priority or no, the Rec faithful will want to see Bath gobble up the cherries and spit out the stones: so will many of the players.

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 14:24:34 +0000

Wasps secured the bonus point win they needed to end up on top of pool 2 of the Champions Cup and now face a trip to Dublin, for a quarter final against Leinster, but it was far from easy.

Sarries vs Toulon - Match Report

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 13:54:32 +0000

As we prepared to leave the ground last night, and it certainly was last night, perhaps the latest ending that I have seen an afternoon kick-off, I was asked which fairy-tale I would borrow to tell the tale of what we had just witnessed.  Well, it was no fairy-tale, and the only person capable of doing justice to the events was Richard Wagner, creator of some of the longest, most dramatic and gripping tales of men and gods ever staged.

Chelsea Juggernaut Marches On Towards Triumph

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 13:51:50 +0000

Hull City succumbed to a second two-nil defeat of the season against the league leaders, with Costa scoring in both encounters. However, the east coast team proved to be anything but a pushover. Their resistance was only eventually surmounted when Gary Cahill headed home a Fabregas free kick from close range. Cahill himself had been involved in a sickening collision with Ryan Mason in the first half which resulted in serious concussion for the latter. That drama aside, the Premiership favourites cashed in on a weekend of dropped points for Liverpool and Tottenham, whilst the two also rans of Manchester also mustered a mere solitary point.

You can't win 'em all

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 12:02:38 +0000

London Irish's winning streak comes to an end. A team filled largely with youngsters were faced by a resolute and dogged team in Osprey's Premiership Select, who refused to be beaten. With 10 minutes on the clock (I guess, difficult to tell this season!) and over points up, the Osprey's came out fighting and took the win.

Arsenal Keep Title Hopes Alive? Player Ratings

Sun, 22 Jan 2017 18:53:14 +0000

Arsenal passed and controlled the midfield well in the first half but were let down by our “front three”. We had a bloke upfront who wants crosses into the box and Wenger  played two “wingers” who just want to come inside all the time.

Ged Ladd describes the fourth day of the Taunton match from his work perspective. Having spent part of the previous week in Scarborough and having scheduled more time off the coming Thursday and Friday for the test match, Ged was planning on getting his work done during the Somerset match…until the match got very interesting! There are links to MTWD reports covering all 4 days at end of the report to confirm it really happened. This was the day most of us dared to believe we could really be champions.

Pujara To Lead Rest of India in Irani Cup

Thu, 19 Jan 2017 21:41:04 +0000

Pujara leads a strong Rest of India team against Gujarat starting tomorrow January 20th at Cricket Club of India's venerable Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.  Recently the Rest of India has done really well against the Ranji Champions with the Rest winning 9 out of the previous 11 ocassions.  This time too the pattern is likely to be the same.  The match also has some added interest as the one-off Test against Bangladesh and the four Test series against Australia is coming up soon.  A good performance here will definitely catch the selectors' eye in case any slots open up in the Test team, either from injury or lack of form.

New Year, New Captain is 2017 the one?

Mon, 09 Jan 2017 05:01:44 +0000

Welcome to 2017 everyone.  The club skipper Tom Abell will welcome you I am sure as will the rest of the squad who have all been stating their desire to get on with this season after having a good go at winning the CC1 for the first time last summer.  What are the prospects and what are we in store for... so many years of promise that haven't delivered.  Is this the one that will?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Steps Down as Limited Overs Captain

Thu, 05 Jan 2017 17:34:26 +0000

India's most successful captain in both the limited over and Test format has called it quits on captaincy.  He remains available for selection as a specialist wicketkeeper batsman.  This is indeed very noble of him, as even now there is nobody who can fill his quite enormous boots as keeper/batsman in the limited format.  Virat Kohli the logical succesor to Dhoni will be grateful that he has decided to ease the transition.  Like his Test retirement, this has been a low-key affair that has kept the team's needs in mind.  This sums up the man.

Williams team silly season

Wed, 21 Dec 2016 02:16:30 +0000

With Technical Chief Pat Symonds confirmed as leaving the Williams team and with continued reports that Paddy Lowe will be leaving Mercedes to join Williams, as well as the uncertainty as to whether or not Valtteri Bottas will leave the team to be replaced by Felipe Massa, it is certainly turning out to be Williams' own silly season. This is not the best of situations as the team prepares for the 2017 F1 season, a season that will see some of the biggest changes in Formula One in recent times.

Williams 2017 driver line-up uncertain

Sat, 17 Dec 2016 08:47:18 +0000

Recent reports have the Williams team considering to allow Valtteri Bottas to leave the team to join Mercedes in 2017. But any such move would only be considered if an experienced driver could be found to replace him. This has seen Felipe Massa come into the picture. Is any decision regarding Valtteri becoming more of a financial decision with the Williams team gettting a reduction in the cost of their Mercedes engines. If the Williams team allows Valtteri to move to Mercedes is it going to be a decision that they live to regret?

Abu Dhabi GP: Massa ends his career with points finish

Mon, 28 Nov 2016 10:07:42 +0000

The final race of the 2016 Formula One season, the 2016 Abu Dhabi GP, would see Williams Martini driver Felipe Massa end his time in Formula One with a points scoring finish with a 9th place. For team-mate Valtteri Bottas his race would end in disappointment with a retirement with a suspension issue. The Williams Martini team would finish 5th in the Constructors Championship.

Abu Dhabi GP: Massa 10th in his final qualifying

Sat, 26 Nov 2016 14:35:48 +0000

The results of qualifying for the 2016 Abu Dhabi GP would see the Williams Martini team secure 10th and 11th. For Felipe Massa this would be his last qualifying session in Formula One so it was a great way to finish his carer ahead of his team-mate. Valtteri Bottas would finish in 11th and would have the choice of tyres for the strat of the race.

Abu Dhabi GP: Bottas 9th for Williams Martini in FP3

Sat, 26 Nov 2016 11:26:25 +0000

After an encouraging start to the final practice session for the 2016 Abu Dhabi the results of the session was somewhat disappointing. Valtteri Bottas was able to keep in the top ten finishing in 9th but for team-mate Felipe Massa his session would see him down in 14th. His session was marked by a difficult qualifying simulation near the close of the session where he would spin as well as run wide seeing him drop down the times. Of more concern was the fact that both Force India cars were ahead of the Williams pair.
