Hegarty and Fortson Garner CoSIDA District II All-Academic First Team Nods

The 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Women’s Soccer Teams were announced on Thursday and the Navy women’s soccer pairing of senior midfielder Meghan Hegarty and sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Fortson were recognized as two of the top 11 student-athletes in the region. Made up of NCAA Division I schools in the D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia area, Fortson was District II’s only goalie, while Hegarty was one of three midfielders named to the team.

In a matchup of the two best teams in the Patriot League, the fans at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Sunday were treated to an exciting Patriot League Women’s Soccer Championship Final that featured break-neck scoring throughout the first half and a furious comeback attempt by the host Navy women’s soccer team. When the final whistle blew, the second-seeded Bucknell Bison (12-8) came out on top of the top-seeded Navy Midshipmen (16-4-1) by a score of 3-2.

In a rematch from Oct. 28, the top-seeded Mids will take on second-seeded Bison after both teams secured victories on Friday night in the semifinal round of the tournament. An Ash Fairow hat trick led the Mids to a 3-0 win over Colgate, while Bucknell used an Alex Catanzarite goal in the 87th minute to edge Boston University, 1-0. The match kicks off at 12:00 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Playing in the first semifinal of the Patriot League Tournament, the Mids (16-3-1) rode a red-hot Ash Fairow, who recorded just the third hat trick in the 27-year history of the conference tournament, to the tune of 3-0 victory over Raiders (10-7-2) at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

For the third straight year, senior midfielder Meghan Hegarty found herself named to the exclusive list that celebrates the best and most complete student-athletes in the conference. For the first time in program history a second Mid was named in the same year, as sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Fortson also garnered a spot on the 11-person team.

Looking to keep its hold on first place in the Patriot League standings, the Mids (13-3-1, 6-0-1 PL) used a goal by Natalie Dzhandzhapanyan (Sr., Diamond Bar, Calif.) in the 78th minute to break the scoreless tie and lead to the eventual one-goal victory over the Leopards (3-8-2, 1-5-1 PL).
