Navy stood 26th with 17 points, one half point ahead of Cal Baptist and one piont ahead of West Virginia who each had one remaining wrestler in the competition.
Thu, 01 Dec 2016 14:30:00 ESTAfter stepping away from competition for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Navy wrestling team (4-0, 0-0 EIWA) returns to action on Friday when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the 2016 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The Las Vegas Convention Center will serve as the host venue for the two-day tournament slated to begin Friday at 9:00 am PT / 12:00 pm ET. The CKLV Invitational is one of the top annual events that highlights some of the nation’s best wrestlers. This year’s field features 35 teams, including nine programs ranked among the top 25 in the country and another four, including Navy, who are receiving votes. Additionally, nearly 70 ranked wrestlers will be in action.

On the strength of seven wrestlers placing in the top-four, the Mids recorded a team score of 114.5. Jadaen Bernstein (Jr., Glen Gardner, N.J.) and Steban Cervantes (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.) led Navy’s individual efforts as they won respective titles in the 174- and 197-pound weight classes.

Having won the team title in 19 of the 38 years the tournament has been held, the Mids will battle 11 teams — Binghamton, Brown, Bucknell, Campbell, The Citadel, Delaware Valley, George Mason, Indiana, Johns Hopkins, Kent State and Ohio — for the 2016 Navy Classic crown.

The victory by Wilding marked his second collegiate tournament victory and his first in a completely open event (2015 Michigan State Open Fr/So Div.).

The Mids capped off the day with their annual Blue-Gold Challenge Matches where the Gold squad narrowly defeated the Blue, 20-15.

Utilizing a pair of mats, the Mids will divide into two squads (Blue and Gold) and will face both foes at 1:00 pm and 2:45 pm. Navy will wrap up the day of action by conducting its annual Blue-Gold Challenge Matches beginning at 4:30 pm. Admission is free for Sunday’s matches.
