Do you eat the typical three meals a day? Well, you might think that but in reality, if you’re making unhealthy drink choices, you could be consuming one or two additional meals’ worth of calories each day. The last thing you want is to consume an extra meal after already eating dinner so here are the worst drinks to have at night if you’re trying to lose weight.   [Photo: Shutterstock]1. Cocktails   After a long day, you want to unwind with a drink. We get it! However, according to Registered Dietitian, Kathleen Zelman, “coolers may sound light and airy, but they are heavy on calories.” She says the healthier option is a glass of wine but that’s still extra calories. Even though a shot of hard liquor has fewer calories than a glass of wine, if you mix it with soda or any other mix, it could have upwards of 700 calories. Fancy coffee   First of all, you shouldn’t drink coffee too late in the day because it will ruin your sleep, which in turn can cause weight gain. So white breads and pastas, pretzels and chips that come in bags, you get the idea.      Sears says, "The worst carbs are those that enter the blood at a rapid rate (i.e. refined carbs) because they increase insulin secretion that drives down blood sugar levels inducing rapid hunger and the tendency to overcome consume more calories." Ask anybody who's training what the most important diet rule is--and 9 out of 10 of them will say eating plenty of protein.   Registered dietitian Matthew Kadey explains that we need protein for a multitude of reasons--to repair and rebuild muscles, to speed up our metabolism, to reduce hunger cravings, and "slow the release of carbohydrates into your bloodstream, which can prevent the sudden spikes in blood sugar that are thought to encourage fat storage and sagging energy levels." With so many reasons to love protein--is it ever not okay to eat something that's protein-packed? The answer is yes--not every protein is created equal--especially for fat loss.    Click to find out which proteins might actually be undermining your weight loss. Processed meats   Processed meats like deli meats and hot dogs aren't metabolised as easily by the body because of the chemicals they contain.
