No. 13 Navy Drops GARC Match at No. 16 Akron

The Navy rifle team fell in its final competition of the 2017 calendar year by a score of 4,657-4,641 on the road at Akron on Saturday. In a Great American Rifle Conference match, the Mids (2-2, 1-2 GARC) shot within a point of their season average, but host Zips (3-3, 1-3 GARC) shot a school record on their way to the 10-point victory. Kestrel Kuhne and Thomas Sarant led the Mids with respective aggregate scores of 1,165.

Navy Rifle Heads to Akron for GARC Matchup

The Navy rifle team will look to keep its momentum rolling this weekend with a Saturday morning matchup at the University of Akron. In a Great American Rifle Conference competition, the Mids will attempt to improve its team scoring for the third time in four meets, as well as knock off a skilled league opponent. The first shot between the Mids and Zips is set for 8:30 a.m. at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.

Navy Rifle Battles to Third Place Result at President's Trophy Match

The 2017 President's Trophy Match on Saturday was one for the record books as the top-three teams all recorded aggregates of 5,800-plus points and were separated by just 13 points. After the final shots were fired at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range, the 12th-ranked Air Force Falcons defended their title with 5,821 points. The host No. 13 Navy Midshipmen and No. 16 Army Black Knights were close behind Air Force in the standings as Army edged Navy for second place by two points at 5,810 to 5,808. The Coast Guard Academy finished in fourth with a score of 5,610.

Mids to Host President's Trophy Match on Saturday

The Navy rifle team is set to host the annual President's Trophy Match on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. Beginning at 8:00 AM, the Mids will take on the squads from Air Force, Army and the Coast Guard Academy in an eight-up, five-count competition that tests the depth of each respective program.

The 13th-ranked Navy rifle team was felled Sunday in a road matchup at No. 3 Kentucky by a final score of 4,711 – 4,640. Shooting at the Wildcats’ Buell Armory, the Mids performed well, but were unable to overcome two outstanding halves of competition by the host Kentucky (1-0, 1-0 GARC) squad. Josh Watson led the effort for Navy (2-1, 1-1 GARC) on Sunday with a career-high 586-point score in smallbore on his way to a team-high aggregate of 1,164.

The Navy rifle team earned its second straight victory to open the 2017-18 season as the Mids rolled to a 4,643 to 4,553 win over the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday. Shooting at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range for the first time in the season, Navy (2-0) recorded the top-seven aggregate scores with Torrance Kang earning top-billing with a total of 1,164 points.

After opening its 2017-18 campaign with a GARC conference win at Memphis on Sept. 24, the Navy rifle team will host the Coast Guard Academy in its season home opener on Saturday. Shooting at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range, the Mids (1-0, 1-0 GARC) and Bears (0-0) will begin competition at 9:00 a.m. The matchup is the first of two this season, in which the programs will shoot at the range. On Saturday, Nov. 4, Navy and USCGA will be two of the four service academy teams competing in the 2017 President's Trophy Match.

The Navy rifle team began its 2017-18 season on Sunday in impressive fashion as the nation’s 14th-ranked team went on the road and knocked off No. 11 Memphis in a Great American Rifle Conference match by 39 points at 4634 to 4595. In the first competition for the Mids under first-year head coach Mike Anti, the team posted a 2,297-point output in smallbore and a 2,337-point result in air rifle. Junior Josh Watson highlighted Navy’s performance with a career-high 1,167-point aggregate score.
