Bill Kelley Retires from Navy Rifle Program After 18 Years as Head Coach

Bill Kelley announced on Tuesday his retirement as head coach of the rifle team at the United States Naval Academy after 18 years at the helm of the highly-competitive program. The 2004 Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Kelley transformed the Mids into a perennial NCAA Championship contender as the team competed on the national stage 12 different times during his time in charge of the Midshipmen.

Four Mids Named CRCA Scholastic All-Americans

The Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association recently announced its 2016-17 postseason awards and in the national press release four Navy rifle student-athletes were recognized for their prowess in the classroom. For achieving at least a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester, the quartet of Brandon Pippin, Thomas Sarant, Joshua Watson and Kestrel Kuhne were honored.

Navy Shoots a 2326 on Final Day of GARC Championship

The Navy rifle team completed the two-day Great American Rifle Conference Championship on Saturday with a 2326-point effort in air rifle. Combined with the program's 2295 points on Friday during smallbore, it placed ninth overall with 4621 points. Amongst a tightly-grouped field of nationally-ranked teams shooting at Akron's Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Fieldhouse, the Mids finished within nine points of sixth place.

Navy Finishes Day 1 of GARC Championship with 2295 Points

The Navy rifle team opened the Great American Rifle Conference Championship on Friday with a solid showing in smallbore that has the team right in the thick of the nine-team field. Shooting at Akron’s Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Fieldhouse, the Mids received three of the top 19 individual scores on their way to a cumulative amount of 2295 points. Navy currently sits seventh overall, but more importantly just 11 points out of third place and 16 out of second with the air rifle competition ahead on Saturday.

Jonas Repeats All-GARC Recognition

Thursday evening at the awards banquet prior to competition at the Great American Rifle Conference Championship, the conference announced its all-league honorees. For the second straight season, Daniel Jonas (Sr., Allentown, N.J.) earned recognition as he was named to the All-GARC Second Team in smallbore.

Live Targets | The No. 15 Navy rifle team will conclude its 2016-17 season this weekend with two days of action at the Great American Rifle Conference Championship. Starting Friday morning and running through Saturday afternoon, the Mids will shoot at Akron’s Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House against a highly skilled national field with nine of the NCAA’s top 16 teams. The first relay with Midshipmen competing in it is at 10:15 a.m. on Friday for smallbore. On Saturday, the competition moves onto the air rifle discipline.

Navy Scores 4633 Points in NCAA Qualifying Match

The Navy rifle team completed its regular season with a 4633-4418 victory over John Jay in the 2016-17 NCAA Qualifying Match for both squads. The Mids (9-6) won both the smallbore and air rifle portions of the competition over the Bloodhounds (3-5) on their way to the victory at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range on Saturday. Underclassmen Josh Watson (So., Enterprise, Ala.) and Kestrel Kuhne (Fr., Everett, Pa.) led Navy with respective aggregate totals of 1163 for Watson and 1161 for Kuhne.

No. 15 Navy and John Jay Set to Conclude Regular Season with NCAA Qualifier

The No. 15 Navy rifle team (8-6) is set to conclude its regular season on Saturday morning with a home match versus John Jay (3-4) at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range. The 9 a.m. competition will act as the NCAA Qualifying Match for both programs.

Rifle Falls in Star Match at Army

The Navy rifle team's attempt to secure the 2017 Star came up short on Saturday at Army's Tronsrue Marksmanship Center by a final score of 5823 to 5788. The Mids (8-6, 2-6 GARC) ran into a Black Knights (5-6, 3-5 GARC) team that used their experience, home-range advantage and a scorching first half in smallbore to earn the victory.

2017 Star on the Line for Navy Rifle

Live Targets | After a strong start to the second half of its 2016-17 season in January, the Navy rifle team has its sights set on securing the 2017 Star for the sport this Saturday on the road at Army. Shooting at the Black Knights' Tronsrue Marksmanship Center, Navy (8-5, 2-5 GARC) will go shoulder-to-shoulder with Army (4-6, 2-5 GARC) beginning at 9 a.m. In what promises to be a tight match, the two teams come into Saturday's competition separated by just 12.44 points in the NCAA standings with the Black Knights' 12th with an NCAA average of 4658.67 and the Mids' 15th at 4646.33. Army has come out on top of tight matches in each of the last three years by margins between nine and 18 points. Army leads the all-time series against Navy, 44-31.
