The 2004 Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Kelley transformed the Mids into a perennial NCAA Championship contender as the team competed on the national stage 12 different times during his time in charge of the Midshipmen.

For achieving at least a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester, the quartet of Brandon Pippin, Thomas Sarant, Joshua Watson and Kestrel Kuhne were honored.

Combined with the program's 2295 points on Friday during smallbore, it placed ninth overall with 4621 points. Amongst a tightly-grouped field of nationally-ranked teams shooting at Akron's Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Fieldhouse, the Mids finished within nine points of sixth place.

Shooting at Akron’s Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Fieldhouse, the Mids received three of the top 19 individual scores on their way to a cumulative amount of 2295 points. Navy currently sits seventh overall, but more importantly just 11 points out of third place and 16 out of second with the air rifle competition ahead on Saturday.

For the second straight season, Daniel Jonas (Sr., Allentown, N.J.) earned recognition as he was named to the All-GARC Second Team in smallbore.

Starting Friday morning and running through Saturday afternoon, the Mids will shoot at Akron’s Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House against a highly skilled national field with nine of the NCAA’s top 16 teams. The first relay with Midshipmen competing in it is at 10:15 a.m. on Friday for smallbore. On Saturday, the competition moves onto the air rifle discipline.
Sat, 18 Feb 2017 23:39:00 EDTThe Navy rifle team completed its regular season with a 4633-4418 victory over John Jay in the 2016-17 NCAA Qualifying Match for both squads. The Mids (9-6) won both the smallbore and air rifle portions of the competition over the Bloodhounds (3-5) on their way to the victory at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range on Saturday. Underclassmen Josh Watson (So., Enterprise, Ala.) and Kestrel Kuhne (Fr., Everett, Pa.) led Navy with respective aggregate totals of 1163 for Watson and 1161 for Kuhne.

The Mids (8-6, 2-6 GARC) ran into a Black Knights (5-6, 3-5 GARC) team that used their experience, home-range advantage and a scorching first half in smallbore to earn the victory.

Shooting at the Black Knights' Tronsrue Marksmanship Center, Navy (8-5, 2-5 GARC) will go shoulder-to-shoulder with Army (4-6, 2-5 GARC) beginning at 9 a.m. In what promises to be a tight match, the two teams come into Saturday's competition separated by just 12.44 points in the NCAA standings with the Black Knights' 12th with an NCAA average of 4658.67 and the Mids' 15th at 4646.33. Army has come out on top of tight matches in each of the last three years by margins between nine and 18 points. Army leads the all-time series against Navy, 44-31.
