PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference announced the winners of the 2016-17 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards on Wednesday, July 26. Providence College senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) was announced as the winner of the Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award for men’s outdoor track and field.



General News. David Longo Named Assistant Athletic Director For Facilities And Game Day Management

Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced today [July 26] that Dave Longo has been hired as Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Game Day Management. Longo spent the previous nine years at Brown University, most recently as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Facilities and Operations. While at Brown, he also has held the positions of Facilities & Operations Coordinator (2009-12), and Manager, Athletic Facilities & Operations (2012-16). Longo will assume his duties at Providence College on Aug. 7.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– It was announced on Monday, July 24 that the Providence College Volleyball team earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award honors for the second year in a row. Providence was one of six BIG EAST volleyball teams to earn team academic honors.

The Hockey East Association announced today (July 20) that Providence College women's hockey's Natasia Burzynski (Rye, N.H.) was added to the Hockey East All-Academic All-Star Team for earning a 4.0 GPA during the 2016-17 season.

Providence College field hockey Head Coach Diane Madl announced today [July 17] that five student-athletes will begin their academic and athletic careers as members of her program this fall. Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario), Sydney Cramer (Sciota, Pa.), Cassie Kincaid (Hammonton, N.J.), Manon van Weezel (Waalre, Holland) and Oliva Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) join a team hoping to build off of an exciting 2016 season, during which the Friars finished tied for second place in the BIG EAST Conference (5-2) and posted a 13-6 overall record.



W. Basketball. Nogic And Che Complete Play At 2017 FIBA U20 European Championship

The Providence College women’s basketball program was well-represented at the 2017 FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship, held July 8-16 in Matosinhos, Portugal. Juniors Jovana ‘Yoyo’ Nogic (Lisbon, Portugal) and Clara Che (Valencia, Spain) each earned roster spots for their respective countries, as Nogic played for Serbia and Che competed for Spain.

General News. Providence College Ranked 79th In Final Learfield Directors' Cup Standings

Providence College is ranked 79th in the final Learfield Directors’ Cup standings. The final tally was released over the weekend, and it marked the 13th time that the Friars finished inside the top-100, including three of the last four years. Providence finished third among NCAA Division I non-FBS/FCS institutions and second among BIG EAST Conference members. The Friars picked up a total of 252.00 points.
