America is addicted to oil, and the President would have none of it. This he made clear Tuesday evening in his annual State of the Union speech. President Bush has already stated earlier that he has no plans of nailing out Detroit's struggling automakers. Bush encouraged an increase in federal research into alternative fuels, like ethanol made from sources other than corn. He also pushed for new nuclear power plants along with increases in wind, solar and clean-coal technologies. American automakers do not exactly have stellar reputations when it comes to pursuing fuel-efficient vehicles. (Can anyone spell SUV?) Compared to its Japanese competitors, our friends in Detroit have some serious catching up to do in terms of fuel efficiency. While Toyota's domestic passenger cars averaged 34.3 miles per gallon and Honda's 36.7 mpg in 2005, GM's domestic passenger cars averaged only 28.8 mpg, with Ford's averaging 28.2 and DaimlerChrysler's 28.7 mpg. The success of the Toyota Prius however now has every automaker scurrying to offer their own hybrid vehicles. Aside from Toyota and Honda, Ford, Chevrolet and GM are now also offering their hybrid models. The latest to join the hybrid bandwagon is GM which would be offering a hybrid Cadillac Escalade come 2007. Looks like Ford is aiming to make the ultimate environmental statement. According to company officials, Ford has reportedly begun a secret research project that will result in the ultimate green vehicle - a car that can be completely recycled. The mission, known within the company as the "Piquette Project" (after the name of the Detroit plant where the original Model T was designed), has a goal of "developing renewable, clean and safe vehicles that would be both socially conscious and provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace." According to media reports, the struggling U.S. automaker hopes to have something to show by 2008 as part of the company's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Model T. Ideally, the desired end product should be a fully recyclable car based somewhat on the Model U concept from 2003, its recyclability stemming from the fact that it will be completely easy to disassemble; and that all parts not reusable in automaking will be biodegradable. I couldnt help but nod in agreement to Autoblogs Eric Bryant when he says, ok, enough with the technology reigns supreme crap. Of course, having the latest technological innovation in your car is a good thing. After all, many of todays automotive technology have been designed to make driving our vehicles better and safer. Indeed, having technology such as stability control, active cruise control, and pre-safety systems are only as good as having a driver with the proper attitude and understanding about the seriousness of operating an automobile. I also wonder about the wisdom of driving around in a vehicle which has plasma TV screens inside, x-boxes, crazy sound system and all those incredible add-ons you see sometimes in shows like Pimp My Ride. Its one thing to want to express your individuality, but having an excess of these things enough to distract you from the real purpose of having the car (getting from point A to point B) is completely another. Also, some people tend to get some sort of false sense of security when behind the wheels of certain cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with the latest in automobile technology. Technology is great, but to make it really effective, it should be coupled with good old common sense. It really boils down to being a responsible driver. And that includes keeping your vehicle in shape. The holidays = parties = more drunks on the road than usual. And who do Americans want to drive them home when they’re under the influence? Autoblog reports: Drunks want Katie Couric and George Clooney as Designated Drivers. The report was based on Anheuser-Busch’s annual Designated Driver Survey in celebration of its “self-proclaimed” National Designated Driver Week (December 11-17). According to Autoblog: “the poll found that a plurality of the respondents would most prefer George Clooney and Katie Couric to drive their drunk asses home, with the pair garnering 41 percent of the vote. Coming in second was Mariah Carey, with Tom Cruise and Orlando Bloom following close behind. The HUMMER topped out the list as the vehicle respondents would most like to be driven home in, with Mustang, MINI Cooper and Corvette behind it.” The report also shared an encouraging note that showed a whopping 97 percent of respondents were familiar with the concept of a designated driver, with 21-24 year-olds leading the pack in using them with 86 percent of respondents having been a DD or having been the lucky recipient of a ride home by a DD. Nevertheless, I’m still reminding everyone to not drink and drive, and to keep their vehicles in shape, as winter can be harsh even on the most reliable vehicles. Earlier in this blog I raved about the hotness of the roadster. Today the 2-door, 2-passenger convertible sports car is GM's newest star, winning over critics and earning respect especially after being taken for test drives (usually with its closest rival, the Mazda MX-5). And who could resist the Solstice's sexy, curvy, fresh good looks, superior driving performance and comfort, and that famous base sticker price of $19,995? I sure can't. Forbes Autos says, The Solstice is one of the most stylish convertibles on the road at any price. Its clean design rivals that of the twice-as-expensive Porsche Boxster and is more imaginative than the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The Solstice summarily trumps the familiar and conservative look of its only direct rival, the new-for-2006 MX-5 Miata. And with the recent announcement of the Pontiac Solstice being one of the three finalists for the 2006 North American Car of the Year awards, along with the bestselling Honda Civic (a very tough competitor indeed) and the boldly designed Ford Fusion – the Pontiac's place among today's great cars is cemented. You could only wish that GM will make more cars that excite as much as the Solstice. The latest I heard was that the giant (but problematic) automaker is going back to the ‘50s for inspiration for their next models.
