Kern Earns Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week Laurels

Just three games into his career, Navy goalkeeper Ryan Kern is making quite a name for himself. He became just the third Navy freshman to start a season-opener in goal and the first since Mickey Jarboe in 1997 when he made his debut on Feb. 7 against eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins. On Monday, he became Navy’s first freshman goalkeeper to earn Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors following a stellar performance in front of a hometown crowd Saturday at Delaware.

Dove Garners Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week Honors

Navy's Brady Dove (Sr / Stevensville, Md.) earned his fourth career Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week citation after putting together a record-setting performance in games against #2 Maryland and #8 Johns Hopkins last week. In addition to Dove, Bucknell's Connor O'Hara (offense), Army West Point's Reaves Klipstein (defense) and AJ Barretto (goalkeeper) and Lehigh's Conor Gaffney (rookie) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as Corvias Players of the Week at their respective positions.

The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team outscored #10 Navy 8-1 over the final 20 minutes of play to secure a 15-8 victory over the Midshipmen at Homewood Field in Baltimore. Navy came into the contest having won each of its last 15 season openers, last losing on Feb. 24, 2001, in an overtime decision to UMBC, 9-8.

The Navy men’s lacrosse team returned from the holiday break a week ago with its first practice held on Jan. 5 in preparation for the 2017 season. The Mids will play their first of three preseason scrimmages a week from Saturday (Jan. 21, 11:00 am) when they travel to State College, Pa. to face Penn State. The following week the Mids will make the trek to North Carolina where they will face both the Tar Heels (9:30 am) and Richmond (1:30 pm) in their final preseason tuneup before opening the season on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Johns Hopkins (5:00 pm).

Navy Men's Lacrosse shares quality time with the Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County

Prior to finals, the Navy men's lacrosse team, along with the Mayor of Annapolis Mike Pantelides, spent time with members of the Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County. The team introduced the youth to the game of lacrosse, played catch with the boys and girls, suited them up in Navy game gear, head coach Rick Sowell taught the youngsters about healthy eating habits, MIDN 2/C David Jones led the group in holiday songs and the entire team signed autographs. It was a memorable experience for all!

Navy head coach Rick Sowell and 2016 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year John Connors are among the finalists for US Lacrosse Magazine’s annual “Best of Lacrosse” Awards. Fan voting begins this week and runs through Monday, Dec. 19 (5:00 pm ET). The winners, which will be determined ultimately by the US Lacrosse Magazine staff, will be announced on Dec. 27. Fans can vote on the US Lacrosse Magazine web site at or via social media using the hashtag #BestOfLax.
