The United States Naval Academy announced its major athletic award winners Thursday afternoon at the annual Prizes and Awards Ceremony at Alumni Hall.

Fennell, Rees and Torain Garner USILA All-America Honors

Navy senior defenseman Chris Fennell, senior long-stick defensive midfielder Matt Rees and sophomore midfielder Greyson Torain were among the 104 student-athletes named to the 2017 USILA All-America teams announced on Wednesday morning. Navy has had at least one player (277 different Mids) earn All-America recognition in 94 of the 96 years in which the awards have been handed out, including each of the last four years under head coach Rick Sowell.



Navy’s Brady Dove Named Finalist for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award

Navy senior lacrosse standout Brady Dove has been named a finalist for the 2017 Yeardley Reynolds Love (YRL) Unsung Hero Award it was announced by The One Love Foundation on Wednesday. Dove joins four men - Liam Driscoll (Holy Cross), Tyler Pfister (Ohio State), Mark Rizzo (North Carolina) and Ryan Lukacovic (Virginia) - and five women - Maddie Curley (Boston University), Katie Burgee (Ohio State), Alina Atayan (Marquette), Lauren D’Amore (Penn) and Abigail Finkelston (Princeton) - as the 10 finalists who were chosen from an extensive applicant pool.

Rees and Fennell Earn Inside Lacrosse All-America Honors

Three-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Chris Fennell and three-time All-Patriot League long pole Matt Rees garnered All-America recognition by the media publication and web site Inside Lacrosse. ESPNU unveiled IL’s inaugural All-America Teams on Sunday night’s broadcast of the opening-round NCAA Tournament game between Syracuse and Yale.

Matt Rees Named MVP at Men's Lacrosse Team Banquet

Last weekend Navy held its annual men's lacrosse team banquet where head coach Rick Sowell acknowledged the multiple game, season and career records that were broken over the course of the spring, while also recognizing Navy's senior class for its contributions over the last four seasons.

Despite a second-half rally by the fourth-seeded Navy men’s lacrosse team (6-8, 4-4 Patriot League), the Mids’ season came to a close Tuesday evening with an 11-7 loss to fifth-seeded Holy Cross (5-9, 4-4 PL) in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.

Navy will play host to Holy Cross in the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Tuesday at 6:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids, who enter the game 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the Patriot League, are led by sixth-year head coach Rick Sowell, while the 4-9 Crusaders are under the direction of third-year head coach Judd Lattimore. Tuesday's contest marks the 15th meeting in a series that dates back to 2004.



Fennell Headlines Navy’s List of Men’s Lacrosse All-League Selections

Four members of the fourth-seeded Navy men’s lacrosse team were named to the 2017 All-Patriot League Team announced Monday, including Chris Fennell who was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year for a third consecutive year. Three of Navy’s four all-league selections were named to the 15-player first team, while one was selected to the second team.

Kern Named USILA Defensive Player of the Week

Just a handful of days after making his Army-Navy debut and guiding the Mids to a 10-6 win against their archrival, Navy freshman goalkeeper Ryan Kern has been named USILA/BSN Sports Div. I National Defensive Player of the Week. Drexel’s Reid Bowering, meanwhile, was named the offensive player of the week.

Navy senior men’s lacrosse standout Chris Fennell has been selected as the Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Ryan Kern has been named both the Corvias Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week and Rookie of the Week it was announced Monday afternoon by the Patriot League. Kern was also named the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week on Monday.



Mids Score Final Seven Goals to Beat Army in Star Game

A crowd of 12,705 gathered at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis on Saturday to watch one of the most storied rivalries in college sports - the 98th edition of Army-Navy men’s lacrosse. Navy (6-7, 4-4 Patriot League) went on a 7-0 run over the final 16 minutes of the game to overcome a three-goal deficit and defeat #8 Army West Point (10-2, 6-1 PL), 10-6. The Mids also clinched the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA for the 19th time in the last 21 years.
