Hosted at Army West Point in the Holleder Center, Tang competed for Navy in the all-around event, while Beltran tested himself in the event finals of the floor exercise and vault.
Sat, 22 Apr 2017 00:54:00 EDTThe Navy gymnastics team had a stellar showing at the NCAA Championships on Friday night as the Mids went toe-to-toe with nation’s best programs and recorded 400.65 points to place fifth overall in the second session of the qualifying meet. Competing as one of six teams at the Army West Point’s Holleder Center, Navy registered its highest-ever finish at the national meet as it outscored California by 0.4 points. With the combination of both the afternoon and night sessions, the Mids finished 11th overall of 12 teams.

This will mark the second straight season that Mids will be challenging for national glory as the team traveled to Ohio State University in 2016. All-time this is the third time that Navy has competed at the NCAA Championship as a qualified team. The action on Friday begins at 7 p.m. with a championship qualifying session before potentially the team and selected individuals will have the chance to compete in the championship finals on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Tue, 11 Apr 2017 22:49:00 EDTThe 2017 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship qualifying selections were announced on Tuesday and Navy was one of 12 teams to garner a bid and a chance to compete for the national title in 10 days. The championship qualifying meet will take place Friday, April 21 at Army’s Christl Arena. Navy has now earned a spot in the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet in each of the last two years. Prior to 2016, the last and only prior appearance by a Midshipmen team in the national meet was in 2009.
Sat, 08 Apr 2017 23:26:00 EDTIn a hard-fought postseason championship event, the Navy gymnastics team went head-to-head with William & Mary over six rotations at the ECAC Championships on Saturday. Competing as part of a five-team field at the University of Illinois-Chicago, the Mids led through four rotations before a late charge by the Tribe gave the team from Williamsburg a 404.7-402.55 victory at the UIC Pavilion. Army finished third with 392.45 points, while Springfield was fourth at 392.2 and UIC was fifth at 384.55.

On Saturday, eight members of the team travelled to the BWI airport to welcome a host of military veterans as they came to the Nation’s Capital. The Honor Flight Network honors America’s veterans for their sacrifices and transports them to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials.

Competing in the Cadet West Gym, the Mids (10-9) used a lineup heavy on underclassmen and reserves versus the Falcons (10-5) with postseason action just one week away. He was joined as an ECAC honoree with teammate Tanner West (Fr., Cypress, Texas), who was selected as the ECAC Specialist of the Week. Tang and West drew the attention of the CGA and ECAC for their respective efforts in Navy’s upset win over No. 9 Air Force on Friday night.
Sat, 11 Mar 2017 00:01:00 EDTThe Navy gymnastics team closed out the home portion of its 2017 schedule with a passionate and precise effort on Friday night in a three-team meet versus Air Force and William & Mary. After celebrating the careers of seniors Jonny Tang (Malvern, Pa.) and team captain Wyatt LaPointe (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) in a pre-meet ceremony, the Mids (10-8) came out before a loud home crowd at Macdonough Hall and defeated the Falcons (8-5) and Tribe (7-4) with a final score of 404.1. Air Force finished second with 396.3 points, while William & Mary was just 0.05 points behind the Falcons with 396.25 points. The win was the first for Navy over Air Force in a regular season meet since the 2009 All-Academy Championships.
