Depth and Lower Boats Shine for Heavyweight Crew at Eastern Sprints

The Navy heavyweight crew program began postseason action on Sunday with six boats racing in the 61st annual Eastern Sprints. When the day-long competition with both heat and finals racing was complete at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., the Mids' fourth, fifth and sixth varsity eight boats all found themselves as recipients of medals for top-three results. As a team, Navy finished in 12th place in the Rowe Cup standings amongst a field of talented east coast programs.

The event annually hosts some of the top rowing squads from across the country in a day-long competition. The heat racing begins at 8 a.m. before championship final action kicks off at 1 p.m.

Heavyweight Crew Concludes Regular Season at Mercer Lake

The Navy heavyweight rowing program wrapped up its regular season on Sunday with action at a four-team competition at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. The No. 14 Mids raced in four varsity eight events, as well as a varsity four contest. No. 15 George Washington, No. 17 Columbia and R/V Hobart joined Navy on the 2,000-meter stretch of water. At the completion of the day, the Mids were successful in the three lower boat races with victories in the third and fifth varsity eight events, as well as in the fourth varsity four.

The No. 13 Navy heavyweight rowing team went up against a challenging pair of EARC rivals on Saturday in racing on the Schuylkill River against No. 3 Harvard and No. 10 Penn. When the Adams Cup action was complete the Mids turned in a win in the fifth varsity race and runner-up performances in the second, third and fourth varsity contests.

The five-race slate begins at 8:40 a.m. and will run through 10:15 a.m. with competition on the Cayuga Lake Inlet. In what promises to be a tight meet, all three teams are ranked between 14th and 18th overall in this week's USRowing National Coaches Poll; Cornell is 14th, Syracuse is 15th and Navy is 18th in the nation.

Tim Tracey ('16) Named to Cambridge Blue Boat

The prestigious Cambridge University Boat Club named its squad listing for the 2017 Boat Race on Tuesday and 2016 United States Naval Academy graduate and former heavyweight rower Tim Tracey was announced as the four seat in the blue boat. The Boat Race is a competition between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club has been held since 1829 with annual occurrences beginning in 1856. The 163rd Boat Race will take place on the Thames River on April 2.
