109 SFA Student-Athletes Named to Spring 2017 SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll

Another successful academic year for Stephen F. Austin was capped Tuesday as 109 Lumberjack and Ladyjack student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the spring 2017 semester.



SFA Track and Field Places Seven Athletes to the SLC All-Academic Team

Seven individual track and field student-athletes were selected among the ranks of 35 males and 41 females that comprised the 2017 Southland Conference All-Academic teams. Incarnate Word had the most names on the list with 13 selections. Then, SFA and Lamar were tied with seven selections each. Both UIW and SFA led the conference with five male nominees apiece.



NCAA Dreams Cut Short for Ruiz in Pole Vault Finals

The final juncture of the of national pole vault stage awaited Stephen F. Austin’s sophomore Antonio Ruiz at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The vaulter faced the top 24 pole vaulters in the nation at the 2017 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championship. Ruiz, though had to bow out of the competition early in competition after failing to clear the opening height of 5.15m (16-10.75).



Head Coach Phil Olson Announces 2017 Richardson and Barnett Award Recipients

After the culmination of the 2017 Track and Field season, head coach Phil Olson has announced the winners of the Joe Richardson Track Award and the Carolyn Barnett Track Award for the 2017 Indoor/Outdoor season. The awards are part of the Champions Dinner and Award presentation tradition as endowed award named after former track coaches; however, the track team was still competing at the time of the dinner awards, barring the selection of an athlete.



Ruiz Aims for High Marks in 2017 NCAA Track and Field Championships

The Stephen F. Austin Track and Field program travels to its final event of the outdoor season, the NCAA Track and Field Championships at the historical Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Lumberjacks have one athlete who made it through the gauntlet and advanced to the national championships this month. Sophomore Antonio Ruiz makes his first trip to the national meet after making three competition jumps to clear a height of 5.35m (17-6.5). The product of Tomball, Texas, finished seventh at the Regional Round, two weeks after he placed second at the Southland Conference Championship. Ruiz set a new personal best of 5.52m (18-1.25) this season at the Tom Tellez Invitational in early May, which gave him the fifth best mark in the nation.



Men’s 4x400 Hits Season High Mark at Final Day of the NCAA West Region

The final day of the NCAA West Preliminary began with the men’s discus as the first event of Saturday morning. The sophomore Trenton Bridges was SFA’s lone representative in the throwing ring, coming in with a PR of 54.34m (178-3.75) from the Texas State Bobcat Classic. Bridges was ranked 34th in the region before the NCAA meet. His first throw would come out to a 50.44m before he maxed out on his second throw, marking a 51.86m (170-2.0). The distance would place him 18th in the competition after the first two flights. He would finish 33rd overall.



Antonio Ruiz Punches Ticket to Nationals in the Pole Vault

The 2017 NCAA West Regionals were held from May 25 through May 27 at Mike A. Myers Stadium at The University of Texas at Austin. The Lumberjacks had 14 individuals and one relay qualify for a chance to continue their season through Nationals. For the running events, an athlete had to place within the top three of their heat in the first round or be the next six fastest times to advance to the quarterfinals. From there the competition then narrowed down from 24 runners to 12 runners who would get a shot at the NCAA Championships in Oregon. The field events took a pool of the top 48 athletes in the region and gave them three attempts to compete for the 12 spots that got to advance to Oregon.



NCAA Track and Field West Regionals Begin Thursday

The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s track and field team will send 14 student athletes and one relay to compete against the best athletes in the region at the 2017 NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round on Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27. The three days of competition will take place inside Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin. Qualifying individuals and relays from the regional round advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 7-10.



SFA Places 22 Individuals on All-Southland Conference Outdoor Teams

The Stephen F. Austin Track and Field program filled up all three of the 2017 All-Southland Conference teams as announced by the league office on Monday morning. SFA landed a total of 24 selections between the three teams. While Head Coach Phil Olson was named the 2017 SLC Coach of the Year on the women’s side.



Fourteen Lumberjacks Qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds in Austin

The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee announced, on Thursday afternoon, the participants for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary competitions. The west regional meet will be held this year at The University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas from May 25-27.



Track and Field Women Clinch Southland Conference Title; Men Runner-Up

The women's team won their eighth SLC team title and first since 2015. The team garnered 166 points, squeezing by Sam Houston who finished with 164.50 points. SFA totaled 25 medals between the men and women's teams. The men had 14 total medals, three of them gold, while the women had 11 total medals.



Explosive First Two Days for SFA Track and Field; Nine Medals, Two Titles, and One Record

The Stephen F. Austin Track and Field team has already claimed nine medals, two titles, and one record through the first two days of the Southland Conference Championship. The first day proved tough for the Lumberjacks as they faced bouts of torrential down pour and several lightning delays. The Lumberjacks dug deep and persevered through it all, emerging with several tremendous marks.



SFA Track and Field Aims for Third Straight Southland Conference Title

The Stephen F. Austin Track and Field team will be traveling down to New Orleans on Friday for the 2017 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The Lumberjacks will be looking to make school history again as they pursue their third straight Southland Men’s Team Title. Last year, the men clenched the program’s first back-to-back title with 172.0 points, 23 points more than the second place Sam Houston State. The SFA men have four total team Southland Conference Championship titles and 67 individual, the second best in the SLC.



Imani Nave Chosen as Southland Athlete of the Week

At the Texas State Bobcat Classic last week, freshman Imani Nave set two new personal bests in the 200m and 100m events. Her performance earned her recognition from the Southland as she was chosen as this week’s Women’s Athlete of the Week presented by Universal Coin & Bullion. The freshman from Tomball was one of the nine SFA athletes that claimed individual titles at the Bobcat Classic. Both of Nave’s finishes helped add points to the women’s team overall second place finish with 178 points.



Olson Announces the Addition of Eight Signees to 2018 Track Roster

Stephen F. Austin Track and Field head coach Phil Olson has announced the signing of eight athletes to National Letter of Intent during the spring signing period. Both the men's and women's team add four sprinters, one jumper, and four distance runners to the roster.
