SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Providence College men's and women's Cross Country teams competed at the Joe Piane Invitational on Sept. 30 in South Bend Ind. The Friars finished first in the women's race and fourth in the men's race.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's and women's Cross Country teams return to action at the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on Sept. 30. This will be the first time since 2009 that Providence has competed at the Joe Piane Invitational. In the latest USTFCCCA poll, the women were ranked No. 1 in the nation and the men received votes towards being ranked in the top 30. The women's race will start at 2:00 p.m. ET and the men's race will start at 2:45 p.m. ET.



Women's Cross Country Ranked First In Nation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The USTFCCCA released their latest national poll on Sept. 27, ranking the Providence College women’s cross country team first in the nation. The Friars have slowly but surely closed the gap on the number one spot since being ranked third in the Pre-season poll on Aug. 30. The Friars received four first place votes and have a four-point lead over Colorado and New Mexico, who are both tied for second place. This is the first time the women have been ranked number one in the nation since November 18, 2013.



Cross Country's Oakley, Collins Earn BIG EAST Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST announced that Providence College cross country’s graduate students Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) earned BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors on Sept. 20. This was Oakley’s first honor of the season while it was the second time this season that Collins has won the honor.

Both the men and women were ranked in the latest USTFCCCA national poll. The women are ranked third overall, while the men are ranked 20th. The women’s race will begin at 3:00 p.m. followed by the men’s race at 3:30. A mixed open race will follow the men at 4:15 p.m.

The Providence women and men’s Cross Country programs retained their preseason rankings of first and second, respectively, in the Northeast Region. These rankings are based off of the first two weeks of the season, which saw both the men and women win the UNH Tri-Meet with a perfect score of 15 points.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The BIG EAST Conference announced its first Athlete of the Week honors for the Cross Country season on Sept. 7. Graduate student Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) won the Women’s Athlete of the Week and junior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) won the Men’s Athlete of the Week to complete a Providence sweep of the honors.

This meet has been the traditional season opener for Providence Cross Country program. The men have begun their campaigns competing against UNH every season for the past 30 years. The women started their tradition of opening up against the Wildcats 20 years ago. Last season, both the men and women took home the victory, with the men scoring 15 points and the women scoring 16.



Men's Cross Country Ranked 21st in Nation, Second in Region.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Track Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the first national rankings today (Aug. 30). The Providence College men's cross country team is ranked 21st in the poll. The Friars are also ranked second in the Northeast region. Providence was only ranked behind Syracuse University, last year's NCAA Champions, in the Northeast.
