Thu, 13 Apr 2017 15:17:00 EDTProvidence College men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley announced today (April 13) that student--athlete Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) has signed a scholarship offer to attend Providence College beginning in September 2017. He is one of the top point guards in the nation and is ranked in the top 38 in the country by Scout.com (No. 31), 247 sports.com (No. 32), ESPN.com (No. 36) and Rivals.com (No. 38). He is the highest ranked recruit to commit to the Friars since 2012 (Rick Ledo, No. 21 and Kris Dunn, No. 23). Ashton-Langford, joins forwards Nate Watson and Dajour Dickens (both signed a NLI in the fall) to make up a Friar recruiting class which is ranked No. 29 by ESPN.com and No. 15 by 247sports.

The honors were given out at the team’s annual end-of-year banquet at the Omni Hotel in Providence, R.I. All-BIG EAST Second Team honorees junior Kyron Carwright (Compton, Calif.) and junior Rodney Bullock (Hampton, Va.) were named the Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Players. Other highlights included senior Casey Woodring (Darien, Conn.) earning the John Zannini Coaches Award, and freshmen Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) and Maliek White being named the Coca-Cola Most Promising Prospects. Freshman Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) earned the Marvin Barnes Defensive Player of the Year honors. Sophomore Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) received the Unsung Hero Award. Junior Emmitt Holt (Webster, N.Y.) earned the Lenny Wilkens Hustle Award. Junior Jalen Lindsey (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was named the Ryan Gomes Most Improved Player. In addition, sophomore forward Tom Planek (Oak Park, Ill.) received the Thomas Ramos Academic Award after posting the team’s highest grade-point average.

It marks the third consecutive season and sixth time overall that a Friar has been named USBWA District 1 Player of the Year. The other Friars who have earned the honor were Kris Dunn (2016), LaDontae Henton (2015), Jamine Peterson (2010), Ryan Gomes (2005) and Austin Croshere (1997).

Emmitt Holt had 14 for the Friars (20-11, 10-8), who entered tied for fourth in Big East Conference standings with Seton Hall and Marquette and have clinched a first-round bye in the league tournament. Lindsey's 3 put the Friars up for good, 6-4, and Providence led 37-25 at halftime behind his 10 points and Kalif Young's 10 rebounds after shooting 43.3 percent from the floor and holding the Red Storm to 29.7 percent.
