WSOC Closes the Spring with Three Matches in Next Two Weeks

Wed, 19 Apr 2017 12:20:00 EDT

MILWAUKEE—The Marquette University women’s soccer team will head to Indiana to face Notre Dame at 2 p.m. Central time on Saturday, April 22 in its last road match of the spring before finishing up at home on April 30 against Wisconsin and Northwestern.“We have three really tough competitive road games, two spring dates, going down to Notre Dame, the ACC regular season champions last year, should be a good a good set up for us coming out of Easter Break,” Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. “Finishing at home, a little like last year playing Wisconsin and Northwestern. Finishing off the spring I think we can hopefully take another step forward not just in play now, but a spring board going into the fall.”Marquette previously tallied spring victories over Iowa State and Milwaukee at Valley Fields on April 2, and drew at Valparaiso on March 31.“I thought we competed at a real high level with this group, considering how early it is and trying to put them in place. Beating Iowa State, for a spring match. We had a real competitive, feisty affair against Milwaukee,” said Roeders. “I think for as hard as we have worked and as fun it has been this spring, I don’t think any of us knew or they definitely didn’t know what it would be like going out without those seniors.”Roeders has seen strides from Eli Beard, Madison Dunker and the rest of the rising senior class. “I think they are doing a great job on the field already, and just really trying finding their role off the field.”In addition to the returning seniors, there are a number of Golden Eagles seeing action for the first time in their college careers after the graduation of 10 individuals. “I think what we need to keep in mind a little is that some of these players are getting playing time for the first time ever,” Roeders said. “Mary Kate Simon, Abby Hess, Josie Fowler, some of those players haven’t been out there and weren’t out there in the fall. Jamie Kutey is finally healthy again. We are seeing some players finding new roles and some players taking strides forward. Should be fun to see how the last two weeks finish here.” After the Golden Eagles face Notre Dame, Marquette will complete its spring campaign at Valley Fields on Saturday, April 30 against Wisconsin at 10:30 a.m. and Northwestern and 1:30 p.m. Central time. The new seasonal dome has provided positive returns that Roeders has already seen this spring. “Being able to train full field since early on in the spring has been a great benefit,” Roeders said. “I think we have really seen the rewards on the field a little bit on how we played. We’ve been training outdoors, but now having this opportunity rain or shine, whatever the weather might be, warm, cold, getting some quality training has been a great benefit.”
