Women's Tennis Ends Season at SoCon Championship

For the first time all season, Southern Conference Player of the Year Ansley Speaks dropped a set to a SoCon opponent as freshman Jordan Strickland of the Western Carolina women's tennis team picked up a 6-1 second set victory as the Catamounts fell to the top-seeded Furman Paladins 4-0 Friday at the 2017 Southern Conference Championship. The set victory would not be enough to lift the Catamounts who lost the doubles point and fell at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles.



WCU Tennis Faces Top-Seeded Furman Friday

The No. 8 seed Western Carolina women's tennis team will take on the top seeded Furman Paladins at the 2017 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship on Friday, April 21 at 8:30 a.m. The championships are being hosted by Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C.



Strickland and McCall Receive Postseason Honors from SoCon

For the first time in program history, the Western Carolina women's tennis team had a doubles team honored with a year-end award. Freshmen Jordan Strickland and Lauren McCall were named Second Team All-Southern Conference at No. 2 doubles the conference office announced Wednesday (April 19) morning. The pair is the first WCU doubles team to earn all-conference since the SoCon began giving out the award in 1993. Strickland was also named to the SoCon All-Freshman team joining teammate Savannah Taranto, who earned the distinction last season, and former Catamount great Stacia Kissell, who was named all-freshman in 2013, as the only three all-freshman honorees in program history. Strickland also brought home the Sportsmanship Award which she shared with Catherine Martin of Wofford. Strickland is the first Catamount to win the Sportsmanship Award since Suzanna Sjokvist in 2007.



WCU Tennis Closes Out Historic Regular Season

The Western Carolina women's tennis team closed out its historic 2017 regular season Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Wesleyan and Tusculum. The two wins gave WCU 13 seasonal victories which set a new program record for wins in a season. The Catamounts broke the record which was set last season when WCU won 12 matches. It also marks the first time in program history in which WCU has had back-to-back double-digit win seasons.



WCU Tennis Falls in Final Conference Match

The Western Carolina women’s tennis team traveled to the site of the 2017 Southern Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon to take on the Paladins of Furman University in both teams final regular season SoCon match of the year. The Catamounts fell to the Paladins 7-0 but will be back to Greenville in just over a week to compete for the 2017 tournament crown.

The Western Carolina women’s tennis team fell in its final home Southern Conference match of the season 7-0 to visiting Samford Sunday afternoon. WCU’s No. 2 doubles team picked up a victory put it was not enough to secure a point for the Catamounts.



Freshmen Break Western Carolina Program Record

The Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped a Southern Conference match 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Wofford College but a pair of freshmen broke the WCU single season doubles wins record. Freshmen Jordan Strickland and Lauren McCall each picked up their 14th doubles win of the season as they teamed up to win at No. 2.



Gardner-Webb Tops WCU Tennis, 5-2

The Western Carolina women’s tennis team dropped a non-conference match 5-2 to Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon. WCU picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles while the two teamed up to win No. 2 doubles. Freshman Jordan Strickland won at No. 1 while freshman Lauren McCall took the match at No. 6.



Catamounts Drop Dramatic Conference Match

For the seventh time this season the Western Carolina women's tennis team had a match decided by the score of 4-3 and for the fourth time WCU came out on the losing end as the Spartans of UNCG topped the Catamounts Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex. Three of the six singles matches went to third sets including the match clinching No. 1 singles match.



WCU Tennis Drops Saturday Afternoon Match with Chattanooga

The Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped its third Southern Conference match of the season Saturday afternoon to the visiting Mocs of Chattanooga. The Mocs jumped out to an early lead after doubles and hung on to win the match 5-2 over the Catamounts. Freshman Madison Riley moved within two singles victories of tying the WCU program record for wins in a season currently held by former Catamount Stacia Kissell who won 16 matches in both 2014 and 2016.



ETSU Shuts Out Catamounts at Home

In a match that was closer than the final score indicated, the Western Carolina women’s tennis team fell 7-0 to the defending Southern Conference champions ETSU Sunday afternoon in both teams second Southern Conference match of the season. WCU nearly pulled off the doubles point and fought hard in nearly every singles contest but the Bucs were able to pick up the sweep.



Owls Edge Catamounts 4-3 on the Courts Saturday

For the sixth time this season a Western Carolina women’s tennis match was decided by the score of 4-3 and for the third time WCU came out on the losing end as the Kennesaw State Owls topped the Catamounts Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Alexa Webb moved into a tie for third on the single season charts for individual victories as she captured her 13th win of the season.



WCU Tennis Captures Closely Contested Match at USC Upstate

The Western Carolina women’s tennis team traveled to Spartanburg, S.C., to face the Spartans of USC Upstate Thursday afternoon. WCU and USCU battled on every court with WCU using a pair of nearly impossible comebacks to capture a 4-3 victory. Junior Elizabeth Ansari and freshman Madison Riley used an incredible comeback in doubles to capture the point for the Catamounts while Riley repeated the feat in singles to clinch the match for WCU.



Catamounts Win Final Match in Orlando

The Western Carolina women's tennis team added a late match to their annual Spring Break trip as the Catamounts took on Seton Hill University Saturday afternoon. The match featured a rare occurrence as WCU head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins faced off against her mother, Kim Kissell, who is the head coach of Seton Hill.



Catamounts Split Final Day of Spring Break Trip

The Western Carolina women's tennis team lost a hard fought battle with Radford Wednesday morning, 4-3, before sweeping Haverford in the night cap, 7-0, to finish up its annual spring break trip to Florida with a 3-1 record. Freshman Madison Riley was a perfect 2-0 in singles play as she won her 10th and 11th victories of the season to move into a tie for third in the all-time WCU records for most singles victories in a season. She now trails only former Catamount Stacia Kissell who won 16 matches in both 2014 and 2016.
