Spring Football Practice Update #3: Monday, March 19

Peppered by sporadic rain showers, the Western Carolina football team held its fifth practice session of the spring on Monday afternoon, working out for right at two hours in full pads on the turf of E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.

Spring Football Practice Update #2: Saturday, March 17

Western Carolina football concluded its first week of spring practice on Saturday afternoon at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field, working out for right at two hours with its first of seven practices in full pads. Saturday's practice -- one of just two sessions scheduled for Saturday this spring -- was the Catamounts' first in full pads. WCU returns to practice Monday afternoon.

Catamount Football Opens 2018 Spring Drills

Blustery and wintry conditions greeted the Catamount football team as it opened its 2018 spring drills on Monday afternoon on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. Despite bright sunny skies, a gusting wind accompanied frigid temperatures as WCU held its first of consecutive helmet-only practices, working out for right at two hours in the first of 15 sessions slated for this spring.

Catamount Football Opens Spring Drills on Monday

Western Carolina football is scheduled to open its annual spring drills on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field following the university's spring break, holding the first of its NCAA-regulated 15 spring practices on Monday, March 12. The Catamounts will hold their annual Spring Game, presented by Wells Fargo, on Saturday, April 7.

Tripp Weaver Joins Catamount Defensive Coaching Staff

Western Carolina head football coach Mark Speir has announced the addition of former James Madison assistant coach, Tripp Weaver, to his defensive staff as the defensive backs coach and the defensive passing game coordinator.

Mark Speir Adds Justin Hood as Outside Linebackers Coach

Western Carolina head football coach Mark Speir today announced the addition of Justin Hood to his defensive coaching staff. Hood, who has over a decade of experience at all three division of collegiate football as a player and a coach, will oversee the Catamount outside linebackers on the defensive staff.

Catamount Football Adds 16 on 2018 National Signing Day

Western Carolina seventh-year head coach Mark Speir today announced the addition of 16 student-athletes that join five early-signees and two mid-semester transfers, bringing the total of the incoming class to 23 for the Catamount football program. It is the second-largest incoming class for Speir and his staff since inking 24 back in 2013.

Western Carolina Unveils 2018 Catamount Football Schedule

Catamount Football Adds Two Mid-Semester Transfers to 2018 Class

Western Carolina seventh-year head coach Mark Speir has added a pair of mid-semester transfers to his 2018 incoming class. Redshirt junior transfer wide receiver Nate Mullen and junior safety Brandon Bawn have enrolled in classes and join the Catamount football roster where they will take part in spring drills slated to begin in late February.

Newsome to Play for National Team at NFLPA Collegiate Bowl

Western Carolina all-purpose running back Detrez Newsome will suit up for the National Team in the seventh-annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl slated for this Saturday, Jan. 20 at the historic Rose Bowl Stadium. Slated to wear jersey No. 32, Newsome is one of 22 NCAA FCS players among the combined 112-man roster that was divided into two teams – National and American.

Ian Berryman Selected to FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team

Western Carolina redshirt junior punter Ian Berryman was today selected to the 20th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star team. He is the sixth Catamount all-time to earn the selection and WCU's first since 2013 giving the Catamounts a combined seven honors all-time.

Detrez Newsome to Play in 2018 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl

Western Carolina All-American running back Detrez Newsome has accepted an invitational to play in the 2018 National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) Collegiate Bowl. Billed as the "premiere postseason all-star game," the seventh annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be played on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at America's Stadium, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., which has been the site of five Super Bowls and numerous major college football games including the epic FBS national semifinal on New Year's Day.

Trio of Football Catamounts Honored by HERO Sports

Three Catamount football players were among those recognized by HERO Sports following the 2017 season as the website selected its postseason honors. Senior running back Detrez Newsome again graced another All-America first team as an all-purpose back, while redshirt junior punter Ian Berryman was listed on the third team.

WCU's Owen Cosenke Named Freshman All-America by Phil Steele

Western Carolina freshman tight end Owen Cosenke has been selected to Phil Steele's 2017 FCS Freshman All-America second team announced this week. Publication also released its postseason All-Southern Conference team with 14 Catamounts on the list.
