Postseason Accolades Continue for Berryman, Newsome

Two Western Carolina football players continue to receive postseason accolades this week, coming in the form of selection to two additional All-America teams. Senior running back Detrez Newsome and redshirt junior punter Ian Berryman were both tagged on the NCAA FCS All-America teams by both Phil Steele and College Sports Madness, the publications announced.

Western Carolina landed two players on the Associated Press (AP) NCAA FCS All-America team unveiled on Tuesday afternoon. Redshirt junior punter Ian Berryman collected second team honors while senior tailback Detrez Newsome was a third team selection as the AP unveiled three squads chosen by a panel of 10 media members who cover NCAA FCS Football.

Carlton Selected to the 2018 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute

Western Carolina third-year assistant coach Tyler Carlton has been selected to participate in the AFCA / NCAA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, presented by the American Football Coaches Foundation and NCAA Leadership Development. One of eight NCAA FCS coaches selected – and the first from WCU – Carlton will participate in the event slated for Jan. 7, 2018 in Charlotte as a part of the AFCA Convention.

Catamount Athletics Mourns the Loss of Don Powers

Western Carolina and Catamount Athletics were saddened to learn of the passing of former Catamount football student-athlete and coach, Don Powers, on Monday at his home in Mount Pleasant, S.C., after a lengthy illness. Powers, 73, was enshrined in the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame this year, and was honored on Hall of Fame Weekend on Nov. 11 as many of his former colleagues, players, family, and friends gathered in Cullowhee for his induction.
