WCU Men's Basketball Contest with Southern Wesleyan Postponed Due to Winter Weather

Winter weather throughout Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina has forced the postponement of Friday night's scheduled men's basketball game between Western Carolina and Southern Wesleyan inside the Ramsey Center. With the cancellation, the Catamounts and Warriors are working on rescheduling the contest for late January. An official make-up date will be announced on once all details are finalized.

Catamounts Host Southern Wesleyan on Star Wars Night

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team will end a grueling stretch of its schedule, that features three games in just five days, Friday night by hosting Southern Wesleyan in non-conference action. The WCU marketing team is also holding Star Wars Night at the game which will feature giveaways, a costume contest and Star Wars music throughout the game. The top-three best dressed will receive Star Wars prize packs with the overall winner earning four free tickets to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi premier at Cherokee Phoenix Theater. There will also be an auction for a Star Wars inspired Western Carolina jersey with all proceeds going to Coaches vs. Cancer. The Catamounts will look to maintain a perfect record at home this season where they are 2-0 so far in 2017-18. The Warriors of Southern Wesleyan have dropped four-straight and hold a 1-8 record on the young season.

Catamounts Fall to Nationally-Ranked Tar Heels

For the third time this season, the Western Carolina men's basketball team faced a top-15 ranked team in the form of No. 11/10 North Carolina. WCU took an early 5-0 lead before a 33-3 run by the Tar Heels blew the game open the first half. UNC would go on to earn the victory 104-61. The Catamounts knocked down 12 3-pointers in the contest but it was not enough to keep pace with the Tar Heels who had 16 which tied for second-most in UNC program history for a single game.

Catamounts Travel to Defending National Champion Tar Heels Wednesday

For the third time this season the Western Carolina men’s basketball team will take on a top-15 ranked team in the nation as the Catamounts travel to No. 11/10 North Carolina. The Tar Heels are coming off a National Championship winning season and are off to an 8-1 start while the Catamounts are coming off a thrilling 72-71 victory over mountain-rival Appalachian State. The meeting is just the second all-time between the two programs and the first since 1957 when the top-ranked Tar Heels played inside Reid Gym in Cullowhee. The game will be broadcast locally on Fox Sports South with online coverage through ACC Network Extra.

Amius' Slam Sinks Mountaineers, 72-71

Junior Mike Amius of the Western Carolina men's basketball team scored 19 points Monday night against the Mountaineers of Appalachian State but none were bigger than the final two he scored with just over seven seconds to play as he spun around his defender and slammed home the ball to put the Catamounts ahead 72-71. Appalachian State came up empty on the other end as the Catamounts remained perfect at home this season with a 72-71 victory over their former conference-rival Mountaineers.

Catamounts Set for Home Rivalry Game with Appalachian State

For the first time since 2014, the Mountaineers of Appalachian State will visit the Ramsey Center Monday night for a rivalry game with the Western Carolina men's basketball team at 7 pm. The Catamounts renewed the rivalry last season in Boone as WCU picked up a 58-53 victory. The Mountaineers are coming off an 84-61 victory over South Florida while the Catamounts dropped a close 69-60 contest at the College of Charleston. WCU is 1-0 at home this season after the 76-67 victory over Hiwassee while Appalachian State holds a 0-2 mark in road contests. WCU looks for the guard combo of Devin Peterson and Matt Halvorsen to return to form after a tough College of Charleston contest while junior Mike Amius hopes to build off an impressive 22 point performance against the Cougars. The entire Proud of the Mountains Marching Band will be in attendance at the game and will perform throughout. WCU is also offering the first 300 students free Beat App! t-shirts courtesy of Miller Direct, River Walk Apartments and the Law Office of Nathan Earwood while the first 500 students will receive free pizza courtesy of WCU Athletics and Little Caesars.

Catamount Comeback Falls Short in Charleston

Trailing by as many as 18 points in the second half, the Western Carolina men’s basketball team attempted a late comeback against the College of Charleston but fell 69-60 inside the TD Arena Thursday night. The Catamounts led early in the game but CofC took 16 more trips to the charity stripe than the Catamounts which proved to be too tough to overcome. Fifty of WCU’s 60 points came from three players including junior Mike Amius, senior Deriece Parks and junior Marc Gosselin.

Catamounts Head to Former SoCon Rival College of Charleston Thursday

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team heads to the South Carolina Lowcountry Thursday night to take on the Cougars of the College of Charleston. The Catamounts are coming off their first NCAA Division I victory of the season, a 82-72 victory over Alabama A&M that featured 14 WCU 3-pointers. The College of Charleston are returning home after a trip the final Great Alaska Shootout in which they finished 2-1 with victories over Sam Houston State and Alaska Anchorage. The Cougars are 1-0 at home after opening the season with a 68-60 overtime victory over Siena while the Catamounts are searching for their first true road win after an 0-4 start with losses at Clemson, Cincinnati, Minnesota and UMass. Freshman Matt Halvorsen continues to lead the WCU squad as he averages 13.0 points per game but senior Devin Peterson has led the way in the two WCU victories this season including a season-high 21 points against the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.

Catamounts Shoot Lights Out From Three in Victory

The Western Carolina men's basketball team drained a season-high 14 3-pointers Saturday afternoon as the Catamounts defeated Alabama A&M in their final game of the Barclays Center Classic, 82-72. WCU shot 60.9 percent from 3-point range in the game with Marc Gosselin, Matt Halvorsen and Deriece Parks all draining three 3-pointers. Senior Devin Peterson added a pair of triples while leading the team with 21 points, seven assists and three steals.

UT Arlington Uses Late Push to Trip Up Catamounts

Playing in the 2017 Barclays Center Classic, the Western Carolina men’s basketball team saw a single-digit deficit explode to nearly 30 points late in the second half against the Mavericks of UT Arlington. UTA boasts a pair of 7-foot plus centers on its squad which gave WCU trouble most of the night inside the paint. The Catamounts tried to overcome the inside presence with a flurry of 3-pointers but late in the contest a number of offensive rebounds and put backs cost the Catamounts. The Mavericks pulled away for a 89-65 victory which puts them in a championship showdown with host Niagara University while the Catamounts will face Alabama A&M in the consolation contest.

WCU Men’s Basketball Ready for Barclays Center Classic Regional

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team will wrap up its nine-day road trip this weekend as the Catamounts compete in the Barclays Center Classic Regional hosted by Niagara University. The Catamounts will open play Friday, Nov. 24 against a strong UT Arlington squad before facing either Niagara or Alabama A&M on Saturday. If WCU defeats UTA the Catamounts will face the winner of Niagara and Alabama A&M, if WCU loses they will face the loser of the previously mentioned contest. Freshman Matt Halvorsen continues to lead the 2017-18 WCU squad in scoring as he notched another career-high Tuesday night at UMass with 18 points. Fellow freshman Desmond Johnson recorded his first career double-figure performance against the Minutemen as he scored 17 points in the loss.

Freshmen Lead Catamounts at UMass

Freshmen Matt Halvorsen and Desmond Johnson combined for 35 of Western Carolina men’s basketball’s 76 points. Halvorsen led the squad with a career-high 18 points while Johnson also surpassed his previous career-best with 17 points. The Catamounts fell to UMass 85-76 after leading the majority of the opening 20 minutes. The game was WCU’s second of the 2017 Barclays Center Classic.

The Western Carolina men's basketball team will continue play in the Barclays Center Classic Tuesday night in Amherst, Mass., as the Catamounts take on the Minutemen of UMass. The UMass sideline will be patrolled by a familiar face in Matt McCall who served as the Chattanooga head coach for the past two seasons. The Catamounts are in search of their second win of the season and first against an NCAA Division I opponent. WCU shot lights out from 3-point range Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn., against the nationally-ranked Golden Gophers. Especially in the opening half where the Catamounts connected on seven of their 10 attempts from 3-point range. The game marks the second of a four-game, nine-day road trip for the Catamounts which will swing through three states.

Second Half Run Staggers Catamounts at #14/15 Minnesota

Freshman Matt Halvorsen led a hot-shooting Western Carolina men’s basketball team in the first half at No. 14/15 Minnesota Sunday afternoon before a second half surge by the Golden Gophers downed the Catamounts, 92-64. WCU nailed seven 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes against the nationally-ranked Golden Gophers and trailed by just nine points at the half. Halvorsen contributed four of the seven triples in the opening half and added another in the second half before finishing with a team-high 17 points in the loss.

Tough Road Continues for WCU Men’s Basketball

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team will hit the road once again Sunday as the Catamounts take on their second nationally-ranked team in the last three contests. WCU takes on No. 14/15 Minnesota inside Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The Catamounts are coming off their first won of the season while the Golden Gophers boast a perfect 3-0 record. The contest is the first of a four-game road trip that will see the Catamounts travel to Minnesota, Massachusetts and New York. Sunday afternoon’s contest will be aired nationally on Fox Sports 1 with a tip time of 4:30 pm.
