Catamounts Drop Road Contest at ETSU

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team fell 66-50 Saturday afternoon in Johnson City, Tenn., to ETSU who improved to 7-0 in Southern Conference play with the victory. Senior Deriece Parks led WCU with 16 points in the loss while three others chipped in eight points each. The Buccaneers shot just under 50 percent from the field to pull away for the double-digit win.



Catamounts Travel to League Leader Saturday Afternoon

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team will take its show on the road Saturday as the Catamounts travel to Southern Conference leaders ETSU. The Buccaneers are off to a 6-0 start in league play and return home to Freedom Hall after escaping Greenville, S.C., with a 62-61 victory over Furman. The Catamounts most recently defeated VMI inside the Ramsey Center 65-58 to improve to 4-2 in conference action and have had four days off to prepare for a meeting against the Buccaneers. ETSU has owned the overall series over the last two decades winning 21 of 22 meetings dating back to 1998 with WCU’s lone victory coming in the 2015 Southern Conference Championship quarterfinals. Saturday afternoon’s meeting will be carried on ESPN3 with audio coverage through the Catamounts Sports Network.

Catamounts Victorious on Star Wars Night

The Western Carolina men's basketball team picked up a 65-58 victory Monday night over visiting VMI on Star Wars Night presented by Cherokee Phoenix Theatres. The Catamounts had four players reach double-figures in the victory with a fifth coming up just shy with nine points. WCU led for nearly the entire game as the Catamounts earned their fourth Southern Conference victory of the season.



Catamounts Host VMI on Star Wars Night

The Western Carolina men's basketball team closes out its three-game home stand Monday night as the Catamounts host VMI for a 7 pm tip-off. The game has been dubbed Star Wars Night presented by Cherokee Phoenix Theatres. Fans are encouraged to come dressed in their best Star Wars look. A costume contest will be held during the game with a chance to win tickets to Cherokee Phoenix Theatre in Cherokee, N.C. A special Star Wars Catamounts Jersey Auction will also take place with proceeds going to the Coaches vs. Cancer Campaign. VMI and WCU split the season series a year ago with each team winning on its home court. The Catamounts are coming off a 66-55 loss to UNCG but have won three of their last five games. VMI has dropped five-straight entering Monday night's contest including four-straight in conference play. A win Monday night by the Catamounts would match the 4-2 conference start by the 2013-14 WCU squad which advanced all the way to the SoCon Tournament Championship game. The game will be carried live on ESPN3 with audio coverage through the Catamount Sports Network.



Spartans Use Second Half Surge to Top Catamounts

The Western Carolina men's basketball team limited its fouls and turnovers but it was not enough as the Spartans of UNCG pulled away in the second half Saturday night inside the Ramsey Center to claim a 66-55 victory. The Spartans controlled the boards all evening, an area in which the Catamounts have excelled in over the last several games, and limited WCU to just four second chance points.

Western Carolina Clips Bears in Low-Scoring Affair

In a game that saw neither team take more than a five-point lead, the Western Carolina men's basketball team outlasted the Mercer University Bears Wednesday night inside the Ramsey Center, 58-56. Junior Mike Amius continued his strong play of late and finished with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. The junior was 8-of-11 from the field in the contest and 5-of-7 at the free throw line.



Catamounts Host Mercer in SoCon Home Opener Wednesday Night

For the first time in nearly a month, the Western Carolina men's basketball team will play at home as the Catamounts host Mercer Wednesday night inside the Ramsey Center. For just the third time in program history, WCU opened Southern Conference play with three-straight road contests. Wednesday night's game marks the first SoCon home game of the season for the Catamounts who have already picked up a pair of conference victories at The Citadel and at Chattanooga. The Bears enter the contest having lost at home to ETSU and at Furman to open league play and are off to their second-consecutive 0-2 SoCon start after dropping their first two contests of the 2016-17 season. The Bears boast one of the top scorers in the league in senior Ria'n Holland who is averaging 20.2 points per game to rank second in the league. The Catamounts counter with a balanced scoring attack that features several players who can step up in be the scoring leader in a game. WCU's most consistent threat has been junior transfer Mike Amius who recently scored a career-high 27 points against Chattanooga. Catamounts Unable to Overcome Hot-Shooting Bulldogs

The Samford men’s basketball team shot 54.2 percent from the field including 52.6 percent from 3-point range in route to an 85-71 victory over Western Carolina Saturday night inside the Pete Hanna Center. The Catamounts fell behind early and were unable to slow down the Bulldogs who led by double-digits for the entire second half. Freshman Matt Halvorsen did all he could to keep the Catamounts hopes of a perfect 3-0 start alive as he tied his career-high of 18 points in the opening 20 minutes and added three more in the second half to finish with 21.



Men's Basketball Seeks to Remain Perfect in 2018

The Western Carolina men's basketball team travels to Birmingham, Ala., Saturday night to take on the Samford Bulldogs at 8 pm. WCU is off to a perfect 2-0 Southern Conference start and seeks to win its third-straight road contest Saturday night. A win on Saturday would be historic for the WCU men's basketball program as it would mark the first time in program history that WCU has won its first three road conference games. The Catamounts are coming off a strong performance in Chattanooga where WCU won 75-63 and led by as many as 20 points in the second half. Junior Mike Amius had the best game of his young Catamount career as he was nearly unstoppable inside against the Mocs scoring a career-high 27 points while ripping down eight boards and collecting four steals. The Bulldogs dropped a home contest to ETSU Thursday night to fall to 5-10 on the season and 1-1 in league action. Amius Powers Catamounts Past Chattanooga, 75-63

For just the fourth time in program history, the Western Carolina men’s basketball team went into Chattanooga and came away with a victory Thursday night as the Catamounts downed the Mocs 75-63 to open Southern Conference play with a perfect 2-0 record. The 2-0 start marks the seventh time head coach Larry Hunter has led the Catamounts to a hot start in conference play and the first time since the 2013-14 season when WCU started 4-0 in league action. Junior Mike Amius was nearly unstoppable as he led the squad with a career-high 27 points while hitting 12 of his 16 shots from the field. He also had a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.



Catamounts Seek 2-0 SoCon Start in Chattanooga

Following a thrilling two-point victory in the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Western Carolina men's basketball team is seeking its first 2-0 Southern Conference start since the 2013-14 season which saw the Catamounts open conference play with four-straight wins. Up next for the Catamounts is a battle with the Mocs from Chattanooga in a city where WCU has just three victories in 39 attempts. UTC is off to an unfamiliar 0-1 conference start after falling to Samford in its conference opener. The Catamounts have had several standout performances this season including the most recent 19-point, eight steal, eight rebound game by freshman Desmond Johnson at The Citadel. The rookie is one of four Catamount newcomers who have all scored at least 18 points in a game this season. WCU has seen seven different players lead the team in scoring over the first 13 games which gives head coach Larry Hunter more lineup options than in the past couple of seasons. Men's Basketball Opens SoCon Play with 81-79 Win at The Citadel
