Catamounts Welcome in the Mercer Bears Saturday Afternoon

The Western Carolina men's basketball team will host the Mercer Bears Saturday afternoon in a 2 pm contest. The Bears come into Saturday's contest riding a two-game losing streak but lost both contests by a combined four points while the Catamounts look to start their first winning streak of the season after defeating The Citadel Thursday night. WCU saw four Catamounts hit career-highs against the Bulldogs and will look to ride that momentum into the Saturday match-up. The Bears are being led by junior transfer Ria'n Holland who is third in the Southern Conference in scoring with a 17.2 points per game average. The game will be aired live on ESPN3 with audio coverage through the Catamount Sports Network.



Catamounts Snap Streak with Thrilling 100-95 Victory

The Western Carolina men's basketball team picked up its first Southern Conference victory of the season Thursday night with a high-scoring 100-95 victory over the visiting Bulldogs of The Citadel. WCU nearly doubled its seasonal scoring average as four Catamounts picked up career-highs in points while connecting on a season-best 57.9 percent from the field. Sophomore Elijah Pughsley finished with a team-high 28 points in the win as he nailed six 3-pointers and scored 18 first half points.



WCU Set for Throwback Thursday Night Against The Citadel

The Western Carolina men's basketball team will host The Citadel Thursday night at 7 pm in a game dubbed "Throwback Thursday Night." All the arena music will be selections from the 1980's and 90's and fans are encouraged to wear their favorite outfits from the two eras. WCU is looking to stop a five-game losing skid while The Citadel limps in as well having dropped its last two contests. The Bulldogs bring in a high-powered offense that is averaging an NCAA best 95.7 points per game but they also give up an NCAA worst 98.8 points per game. WCU fell to The Citadel at home last season 92-91 but was able to avenge the loss in Charleston dropping the Bulldogs 102-97. The game will be carried by ESPN3 with audio coverage on the Catamount Sports Network.



Catamounts Drop Road Contest at ETSU

The Buccaneers of ETSU used a dominating opening half to down the visiting Catamounts of Western Carolina Saturday afternoon, 75-52. ETSU shot over 70 percent from the field in the opening half to build a 46-25 halftime lead. The second half was a much closer affair as WCU fell by just two points.



Catamounts Close Out Three Game Road Swing at ETSU

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team wraps up its three game road trip Saturday at ETSU. The Catamounts, who have started Southern Conference play with an 0-4 record, face one of the top teams in the SoCon as the Buccaneers are one of just four teams with one league loss. The Catamounts will need to defy history as WCU has not won in Johnson City since 1996. The Buccaneers have won 19 of the last 20 meetings between the two programs including nine-straight in their home gym. WCU is coming off a heartbreaking loss at VMI in which the Catamounts fell by the slimmest of margins, 79-78. The Bucs are also looking to recover from a loss as they dropped their first conference game of the season Thursday night against UNCG at home, 83-79. Catamounts Drop Close Call at VMI, 79-78

The VMI Keydets connected on a season-high 13 3-pointers Thursday night to down the visiting Catamounts of Western Carolina, 79-78. WCU and VMI each placed four scorers in double-figures. Both teams lit up the 3-point line in the second half as WCU hit six of its 12 attempts in the closing half while the Keydets nailed eight of 18 from long range.



Catamounts Travel to VMI for SoCon Showdown

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team continues its three-game road swing Thursday night with a match-up against the Keydets of VMI. WCU and VMI enter the contest both searching for their first Southern Conference victories of the season. The Catamounts swept the Keydets last season including picking up a 69-60 victory in Lexington. Both Devin Peterson and Haboubacar Mutombo scored in double-figures in last season’s meeting at VMI. The Catamounts will look to slow down QJ Peterson who is averaging 18.5 points per game which ranks second in the SoCon in Julian Eleby who is scoring at a 13.7 clip. Catamounts Drop SoCon Road Opener at UNCG

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team dropped its first Southern Conference road game of the season Saturday night at UNCG, 76-57. After trailing by just six points at the half, the Catamounts saw the Spartans pull away in the second period for the 19 point victory. Two Catamounts scored in double-figures including junior Haboubacar Mutombo and freshman Onno Steger.



Catamounts Begin Three Game Road Swing Saturday at UNCG

The Western Carolina men's basketball team hits the road for the first time since Dec. 17 as the Catamounts travel to UNCG Saturday night for their third Southern Conference game of the season. The contest marks the first of a three-game road swing for the Catamounts who will also travel to VMI and ETSU this week in the all-acronym series. The Spartans are coming off an impressive 73-68 victory over the defending Southern Conference Champions Chattanooga while WCU is trying to rebound after opening the league slate 0-2 for the first time since the 2010-11 season. Last season, the Spartans snapped an eight game WCU win streak in the series and defeated the Catamounts in Greensboro for the first time since 2012.



Catamounts Second Half Surge Falls Short

The Western Carolina men's basketball team found its offensive rhythm in the second half Monday night against the Bulldogs of Samford University but WCU was unable to hold its lead down the stretch. Samford led the entire first half and most of the second but a 16-2 run by the Catamounts midway through the second half gave WCU its first lead of the game. The Bulldogs would respond with 14-2 run of their own to claim the 70-65 victory late in the period.

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team welcomes in Samford University Monday night at 7 pm to open the 2017 portion if its 2016-17 schedule. The Catamounts ended a four-game losing streak to the Bulldogs last season at home after coming from behind to win 76-71 inside the Ramsey Center. WCU is looking to rebound from a Southern Conference opening loss to defending champion Chattanooga on Saturday while the Bulldogs are looking to improve to 2-0 in league play after dropping UNCG on the road on New Year’s Eve. The game will be televised nationwide on the American Sports Network while audio coverage will be provided by the Catamount Sports Network.



Senior-laden Mocs Drop Catamounts, 64-48

The Western Carolina men's basketball team welcomed in defending Southern Conference Champions Chattanooga Saturday afternoon to open conference play. The Mocs, who returned all five starters from their championship team all of which are seniors, fell behind early but used a 14-2 run late in the opening half to take the lead and the victory. WCU held Chattanooga to its second lowest point total of the season in the 64-48 defeat.

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team opens up its 40th Southern Conference campaign Saturday afternoon as the Catamounts host preseason favorite and defending conference champion Chattanooga at 2 pm inside the Ramsey Center. The game marks the 88th meeting between the Mocs and Catamounts but just the fourth time WCU has met Chattanooga in its Southern Conference opener. WCU is 2-2 in those meetings including 1-0 at home. Catamounts Close Out Non-Conference Play With Victory

The Western Carolina men's basketball team never trailed Wednesday afternoon inside the Ramsey Center but the visiting Lions of Mars Hill kept the game close before a late run pushed the lead out of reach, 87-71. A pair of Catamounts surpassed their career-highs in points while four scored in double-figures. WCU dished out a season-high 20 assists as a number of unselfish plays led for wide-open baskets for the Catamounts.
