Catamounts Fall to SoCon Leader ETSU, 72-61

A strong second half was not enough to propel the Western Carolina men's basketball team to victory Saturday afternoon as the Southern Conference leading ETSU Buccaneers hung on for a 72-61 victory inside the Ramsey Center. WCU outscored the Bucs 36-32 in the second half but it was not enough to erase a 15-point halftime deficit. Senior Deriece Parks led the Catamounts with 17 points including nine in the second half in the losing effort.

Catamounts Unable to Complete Comeback Against Wofford

For just the second time in the last 10 meetings in Cullowhee, the Wofford Terriers came away with a victory over the Western Carolina men's basketball team Thursday night, 84-69. The Terriers used a 39-25 advantage on the glass to control the game including a 12-7 edge in offensive boards. WCU has earned just two victories all season when losing the rebounding battle and the Terriers took advantage of that fact scoring 17 second chance points including 13 in the opening 20 minutes.

Western Carolina women's basketball and men's basketball will host a doubleheader Thursday in Southern Conference action in the Ramsey Center. Women's basketball hosts Mercer at 5 p.m. and men's basketball welcomes Wofford at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be seen on ESPN3 and WMYA MY40. The women's game will be the team's annual Play4Kay game and we encourage fans to wear pink and support the purple and gold.



Men's Basketball Drops Road Contest at UNCG

For the first time in the last four games the Western Carolina men's basketball team found itself on the losing end of a contest Saturday night as the Spartans of UNCG topped the Catamounts 65-48 inside Fleming Gymnasium. Junior Marc Gosselin led the WCU effort as he scored a game-high 15 points while collecting nine rebounds. He also led the team with a trio of assists in the loss.



Men's Basketball Faces UNCG Inside Fleming Gymnasium Saturday Night

For the first time since 2009, the Western Carolina men's basketball team will take on UNCG inside the Spartans on campus home, Fleming Gymnasium. UNCG normally plays their Division I home games at the Greensboro Coliseum but due to a scheduling conflict the Catamounts and Spartans will do battle inside their former home, Fleming Gymnasium. The Catamounts are 6-7 all-time inside Fleming Gymnasium compared to 5-3 inside the Greensboro Coliseum. WCU is riding its first three-game win streak of the season while UNCG has won two-straight after dropping a double overtime contest at Chattanooga. The Spartans edged the Catamounts 66-55 earlier this season in Cullowhee and boast an impressive 12-1 mark at home this season with their lone loss coming against UNC Asheville back in December. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with audio coverage through the Catamount Sports Network.

Catamounts Capture Third-Straight Victory Thursday Night

The Western Carolina men's basketball team picked up its third-straight victory Thursday night after edging VMI 72-60 in Lexington, Va. The win marks the Catamounts first road victory since Jan. 4 and moves WCU into a tie with Furman for fourth in the Southern Conference standings. Three Catamounts reached double-figures in the victory with senior Deriece Parks leading the way with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Men's Basketball Hits the Road in Search of Third-Straight Victory

The Western Carolina men's basketball team travels to VMI Thursday night in search of its third straight victory after picking up wins over Chattanooga and Samford at home this past week. The Catamounts have not won a road game since Jan. 4 but have won four of the last five games in Lexington, Va. WCU enters the contest ranked 16th in the NCAA in steals per game (8.3) while senior Deriece Parks and freshman Desmond Johnson rank seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Southern Conference for steals per game. WCU defeated VMI 65-58 in Cullowhee earlier this season with junior Marc Gosselin leading the way after scoring 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3 with audio coverage through the Catamount Sports Network.

Head Coach Larry Hunter Captures 700th Career Victory Saturday Night

Western Carolina men's basketball head coach Larry Hunter became one of just 40 NCAA men's basketball coaches with 700 career victories with a 88-71 win Saturday night over Southern Conference foe Samford. Hunter is one of just 29 head coaches who have spent at least 10 years at the Division I level to achieve the feat. Hunter's squad was led by a pair of career performances from junior Mike Amius and senior Devin Peterson. The duo combined to score 53 of Western Carolina's 88 points against the Bulldogs.

Amius' Free Throws Lift Catamounts over Chattanooga, 70-68

With just 16 seconds left in the game, junior Mike Amius of the Western Carolina men's basketball team sunk a pair of free throws to put the Catamounts ahead 70-68 over the visiting Mocs of Chattanooga. The Catamount defense held up on Chattanooga's final possession and captured the two-point victory for WCU. Senior Deriece Parks led the WCU attack with 17 points while Amius added 12 points and six rebounds.
