Men's Basketball Poised to Make SoCon Championship Run

Thu, 02 Mar 2017 11:24:00 EDT

The Western Carolina men's basketball team will begin its quest for the 2017 Southern Conference Championship Friday night as the No. 8 seeded Catamounts will take on No. 9 seed The Citadel at 5 pm inside the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The Catamounts have won two of their last three games and are playing some of their strongest basketball of the season. Sophomore Marc Gosselin has posted three-straight double-doubles and is entering the tournament following a 7-of-8 shooting night against VMI in which he was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range. WCU has advanced to two of the last five SoCon Championship games and is seeking its first title since the 1996 squad captured the crown led by current assistant coach Anquell McCollum. WCU has made an appearance in eight-straight quarterfinals and a win on Friday would extend that streak to nine.

Western Carolina Closes Out Regular Season at Home

Sun, 26 Feb 2017 13:51:00 EDT

The Western Carolina men’s basketball team closes out the 2016-17 regular season Monday night at home against VMI with Southern Conference Championship seedings at stake. The Catamounts and Keydets are currently tied with The Citadel for eighth in the SoCon standings. With a win on Monday, WCU will secure the No. 8 seed in the upcoming SoCon Championship and a date with either The Citadel or VMI on Friday at 5 pm in Asheville. With a loss, WCU would need The Citadel to lose against Chattanooga on Monday to guarantee a re-match with the Keydets on Friday at 5 pm. If the Bulldogs defeat Chattanooga and WCU drops the game with VMI, WCU would drop to No. 10 and face either Mercer or Samford on Friday at 7:30 pm. WCU fell to VMI by one point earlier this season in Lexington but have won seven of the last 10 meetings with the Keydets. VMI has dropped five-straight heading into Monday’s game but have the SoCon’s leading scorer in guard Q.J. Peterson who is averaging 19.4 points per contest.
