The meeting marked the 190th meeting between the two mountain schools. Junior Haboubacar Mutombo led the Catamounts with 13 points while classmate Devin Peterson added 11.

The Catamounts and Mountaineers played every year from 1928 to 2014 minus a two-year break for World War II and will continue that rivalry this Saturday. WCU last met ASU in the regular season of the 2013-14 campaign, Appalachian’s final in the Southern Conference. The Mountaineers hold a 118-71 advantage in the series but the Catamounts have won six of the last eight meetings. The game will be aired on ESPN3 with audio coverage through the Catamount Sports Network.

The game will be carried nationwide on Fox Sports 2. WCU is coming off its first road win of the season and second contest of the year in which the Catamounts have held an opponent under 50 points while the Golden Eagles are riding a two-game win streak in which they have scored over 100 points in each contest.

WCU shot just 27.5 percent from the field, 24.0 percent from three and 44.4 percent at the free throw line. The Buckeyes took advantage and pulled away for a 66-38 victory, their fourth-straight to open the 2016-17 campaign.

The game will be carried nationally on the Big Ten Network. WCU is 0-1 all-time against the Buckeyes but head coach Larry Hunter holds one career victory over OSU when his Ohio Bobcats upset the Buckeyes to open the 1994-95 season. The game was part of the Preseason NIT which the Bobcats went on to win with victories over Virginia, George Washington and New Mexico State. Two current members of the WCU roster call Ohio home including sophomore guard Elijah Pughsley and freshman forward Onno Steger.
