Track & Field Announces Coaching Staff for 2017-18

The complete coaching staff for the Villanova track & field and cross country teams was announced on Monday afternoon by Marcus O’Sullivan, who begins his 20th season as the Frank J. Kelly Endowed Track & Field Coach. O’Sullivan announced the hire of Matt Valeriani as a new Wildcats assistant coach. Also joining the staff in 2017-18 are familiar faces Patrick Tiernan and Angel Piccirillo in the capacities of volunteer assistant coach and graduate assistant, respectively.

Women's Track & Field Has Eight Earn National Academic Honors

Eight members of the Villanova women's track & field team were named to the national All-Academic Team announced on Friday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The honorees included sophomore Bella Burda (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), sophomore Sammy Bockoven (Hudson, Ohio), sophomore Kaley Ciluffo (LeClaire, Iowa), junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland), sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.), freshman Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.), senior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) and freshman Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica). In addition, the Wildcats were named an All-Academic Team for having a grade-point average above a 3.0 for the 2016-17 academic year.

World Championships Preview: Wildcats Will Be Well Represented

A contingent of six current and former Villanova athletes are headed to London for the IAAF World Championships, which will be held at London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from August 4-13. The six athletes competing at the world championships represent four different countries and they will combine to run at five different distances ranging from 800 meters up to the marathon.

Bella Burda Earns Second Team Academic All-America Honors

Cleirigh Buttner, Hutchinson Are Honorable Mention All-Americans

Junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) were named honorable mention All-Americans for the outdoor track & field season in an announcement Monday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The pair represented Villanova at the NCAA Championships last week, where they competed in the 800 meters and the 1500 meters, respectively.

Hutchinson, Cleirigh Buttner Wrap Up Successful Season at NCAA Meet

On the first night of the women’s national championships meet Thursday night, sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) ran in the semifinal heats of the 1500 meters and the 800 meters, respectively. They concluded an outstanding 2016-17 year of competition as the two Villanova qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, which returned to the famous Hayward Field track in Oregon for the fifth straight year.

Sophomore Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) and junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) will each be on the track at Hayward Field this evening to run in the national semifinals of their respective events at the outdoor NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Hutchinson is competing in the 1500 meters and Cleirigh Buttner in the 800 meters, with both of their races airing live on ESPN2 and the WatchESPN mobile app.

Junior middle distance runner Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) was named the women’s Mid-Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year in an announcement on Sunday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Cleirigh Buttner was named the region’s top athlete for the outdoor season in advance of the national championships which get underway later this week.

Caroline Hamilton Wins Michael Tranghese Leadership Award

Senior javelin thrower Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) was announced on Wednesday afternoon as the BIG EAST female winner of the 2017 Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete from a BIG EAST-sponsored sport and is selected by the BIG EAST Conference Academic Affairs Committee. Hamilton is the first Villanova student-athlete to earn this prestigious honor.

Sophomore middle distance runner Nicole Hutchinson (West Vancouver, B.C.) ran a blistering time of 4:13.71 in the national quarterfinal heats of the 1500 meters and secured a spot at the NCAA Championships in her latest remarkable race on Saturday night. Hutchinson was one of 12 qualifiers from the NCAA East Preliminary at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex who punched their ticket to the national meet in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

Siofra Cleirigh Buttner Heads to NCAA Championships in 800 Meters

After running the fastest 800 meter race of her collegiate career, junior Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) is headed to the NCAA Championships as the top qualifier from the national quarterfinal heats run during the NCAA East Preliminary at the Kentucky Outdoor Track & Field Complex on Friday evening. Cleirigh Buttner crossed the finish line in a blistering 2:02.11 to win her heat and lead the 12 qualifiers from the East region who will compete at the national championships next month.
