Villanova wrapped up two days of competition at the local meet with several sprint races and the pole vault being contested on a cold and damp afternoon.

Mon, 17 Apr 2017 16:12:00 EDTA new class of inductees to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame was announced on Monday afternoon and Villanova will continue its unrivaled history at the world’s most historic track meet with both an individual athlete and a relay team among the Wall of Fame honorees. Distance runner Brian McElroy will be inducted onto the Wall of Fame for his accomplishments as both a scholastic runner and during his collegiate career. The women’s 1984 distance medley relay team of Mary Ellen McGowan, Veronica McIntosh, Patty Bradley and Lauren Searby will also be inducted.

Villanova had five of the top six finishers in the 800 meters at Cobb Stadium, part of a big day of competition overall for the team.

This is the first time since 2009 that Villanova has sent any of its athletes to the renowned Florida meet.

Smith ran the 3000 meters and posted a time of 10:14.39 to place 18th in a field of 45 runners. The race marked the first time she ran the 3000 meters in collegiate competition.

Piccirillo, who had used up her indoor collegiate eligibility, was part of the Wildcats successful start to the outdoor season on a busy day at Franklin Field. Villanova had a total of 27 athletes competing in 13 different events.

Cleirigh Buttner highlighted a total of six All-America honors for Villanova, which had two individual athletes and one relay team in action at the NCAA Championships last week.

This is the fourth straight year that the Wildcats have had a runner finish in the top eight of the mile at the national championships, and it is also the ninth consecutive year in which Villanova has scored team points at the NCAA meet.

Cleirigh Buttner posted a time of 4:35.79 in the first of two preliminary heats at Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the Texas A&M campus to punch her ticket for Saturday night's final. Also on Friday night, the Villanova distance medley relay squad tallied a 12th place finish with a time of 11:13.59.

The league office announced its full slate of All-BIG EAST awards, and the Wildcats had 14 athletes recognized after posting top-three finishes in their respective events during the conference meet. Middle distance runners Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Dublin, Ireland) and Kaley Ciluffo (LeClaire, Iowa), and freshman sprinter McKenna Keegan (West Grove, Pa.) each earned a total of three all-conference honors.
