Wildcats Travel to Indiana for WNIT Quarterfinal Game Sunday

Thursday night’s 69-67 overtime win over James Madison was Villanova’s fourth overtime game of the season. The Wildcats are now 4-0 in extra session games this year (70-69 win at Butler on Jan. 20; 61-58 home win versus Butler on Feb. 19; 76-71 double overtime home win against Xavier on Feb. 17; 69-67 overtime win at JMU on March 23). Villanova and North Texas are the only Division 1 teams to be 4-0 in overtime games this season.

In the third round of the WNIT on Thursday night at James Madison, the Villanova Wildcats tallied a thrilling 69-67 overtime win over the James Madison Dukes. With the victory, Villanova improves to 19-14 overall, while the Dukes finish the year at 26-9.

The Wildcats will play their second straight CAA opponent when the Wildcats travel to James Madison on Thursday evening. Villanova tallied a 56-51 win over CAA member Drexel last Sunday in the second round of the WNIT. This will be the first all-time meeting between Villanova and James Madison.

The Villanova Wildcats advanced to the third round of the WNIT on Sunday afternoon with a 56-51 win at Drexel. With the victory, Villanova improves to 18-14 on the season, while Drexel finishes the season at 22-11.

Drexel is coached by former Villanova star Denise Dillon who played for Harry Perretta and the Wildcats from 1992-96. Dillon currently ranks ninth all-time on both the Villanova scoring (1,355 points) and rebounding lists (677). As a junior and senior, she helped lead Villanova to a 40-16 (.714) record. She was a first team All-Big Selection as a junior and a second team honoree as a senior. Dillon also served as a Villanova assistant coach under Perretta from 1997-2001. The Wildcats will be playing in their 34th Big East Tournament this week and own an all-time record of 32-30 in the conference tournament. Villanova has three Big East Tournament titles to its credit, capturing the crown in 1986, 1987 and 2003. In the past 33 Big East Tournaments, the Wildcats have advanced to the semifinals 13 times and the title game on four occasions.

The Wildcats and Golden Eagles enter play on Sunday tied at 9-9 in the all-time series. The Wildcats won both meetings against the Golden Eagles last year and have won four of five overall versus Marquette. The Golden Eagles registered a 77-71 win at Villanova earlier this year in the Big East opener on Dec. 28.
