Men’s Track & Field DMR Squad Earns First Team All-America Honors

Following their eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships last week, the Wildcats distance medley relay squad was named first team All-Americans by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday afternoon. Villanova had a lineup of junior Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom), sophomore Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland), sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) in the national championship race.

Wildcats Finish Eighth in Men’s DMR at NCAA Championships

Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) ran a strong anchor leg to help Villanova clinch a top-eight finish in the national championship race of the distance medley relay on Friday night. A lineup of junior Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom), sophomores Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) and Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland), and Wetzel registered a time of 9:39.38 and came in eighth out of 12 teams at Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the first night of the NCAA Championships.

Slade and Wetzel Lead Wildcats with Multiple All-BIG EAST Honors

Junior middle distance runner Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom) and redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) each earned multiple All-BIG EAST honors as the league announced its full slate of all-conference honorees on Thursday evening. Slade and Wetzel were among 10 athletes from Villanova who combined for 15 top-three finishes at the BIG EAST Championships last weekend. Slade garnered All-BIG EAST recognition individually in the Mile, as well as for running a leg on the Wildcats conference champion 4x800 meter relay and distance medley relay. Wetzel also ran a leg of both winning relays.

Men’s Track & Field Distance Medley Relay Earns NCAA Bid

The list of accepted athletes and relay entries for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships was released late Tuesday night, and the men’s track & field team has earned a bid to the national meet in the distance medley relay. Villanova posted a qualifying time of 9:30.16 at the UCS Invitational on February 18 and is ranked seventh among the 12 relay teams accepted to the NCAA Championships. The national meet will be held on March 10-11 at Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas.

Men's Track & Field Wins 4x800 Relay, Finishes Fourth at BIG EAST Meet

In a relay that has typically been one of the team's strongest events, Villanova won the 4x800 meter relay on Saturday afternoon at the BIG EAST Championships and also had four athletes make the awards podium in their respective individual events as the team tallied a fourth place overall finish at the conference championships. Two days of competition at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex wound up with the Wildcats having a total of nine top-three finishes.

Men's Track & Field Wins Distance Medley Relay at BIG EAST Championships

Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) anchored Villanova to a first place finish in the distance medley relay and the Wildcats finished the first day of action at the BIG EAST Championships in second place in the team standings. Villanova scored in the distance medley relay, the pole vault and the weight throw during the first day of competition. In addition, the team qualified six athletes for the final of their respective events.

Men's Track & Field Heads to BIG EAST Championships

Seven men's teams and eight women's teams will converge on the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex this Friday and Saturday afternoon for the BIG EAST Championships. The two-day conference meet in Staten Island, N.Y. runs from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. All of the action can be seen live on BIG EAST Digital Network via the Fox Sports GO app both days. A link to the broadcast, as well as to live results and other pertinent championship information, can be found at the top of this release.

Men’s Track DMR Team Posts Strong Time at UCS Invitational

On a weekend that offered one of the final chances to post times that will hopefully qualify for the NCAA Championships next month, Villanova traveled to North Carolina to compete in the distance medley relay on Saturday afternoon. It was a successful endeavor for the Wildcats, who posted a time of 9:37.90 while running in the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track. The race was run on a flat 200-meter track, and the conversion factor should lower that mark to one which will rank at least in the top 10 of the current national performance list.

Slade and Comber Post Strong Times in Mile at FastTrack Meet

Junior middle distance runner Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom) and redshirt freshman Casey Comber (Maple Glen, Pa.) each had strong results in the Mile as Villanova competed in the FastTrack National Invitational at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex on Friday afternoon. Five different runners competed in the Mile for the Wildcats, who tallied several strong efforts across the board during the meet.

Lampinen Wins 800 Meters at Villanova Invitational

Sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and junior Ishmael Muhammad (Mays Landing, N.J.) combined for a 1-2 finish in the 800 meters at the Villanova Invitational on Saturday evening. In their final home meet of the indoor season, the Wildcats tallied a total of six top-three finishes at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex, including wins in the 800 meters and the 4x400 meter relay. Muhammad and Lampinen ran the first half of the relay, while sophomore Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) and freshman Konrad Bayer (Naperville, Ill.) took the baton for the final two legs.

Wildcats Tally Personal Bests, Strong Finishes at Home Meet

The meet was the first of five straight for the Wildcats at the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex.

Lampinen and Purcell Open Up Strong at Nittany Lion Challenge

Sophomore sprinters Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) were among several Villanova athletes who opened up the new calendar year on a strong note at the Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The pair each competed in the 600 meters and finished in the top four in a field of 20 runners. Overall, the Wildcats had 14 athletes competing in 10 individual events and a relay during the meet at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

Villanova Track & Field Great Frank Murphy Passes Away

One of the legendary names in Villanova track & field history passed away on Thursday afternoon in his native Ireland. Frank Murphy, 69, died following a long illness. He was a noteworthy member of the “Irish Pipeline” of Wildcats track & field athletes, and was a three-time NCAA champion and a two-time Olympian during his career.
