Sprinters Have Success on Final Day at Larry Ellis Invitational

Despite a cold and raw day with intermittent rain, Villanova nevertheless put up several fast times in the sprint events at the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Sophomores Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) and Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) led the Wildcats with impressive races at Weaver Stadium as the team wrapped up two days of competition at the nearby meet.

Logan Wetzel Leads Wildcats at Larry Ellis Invitational

Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) recorded a personal best time in the 1500 meters to lead Villanova at the Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday evening. The two-day meet got underway at Weaver Stadium with the Wildcats competing in four races and one field event.

Penn Relays: McElroy, 1984 Women’s DMR Earn Wall of Fame Induction

A new class of inductees to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame was announced on Monday afternoon and Villanova will continue its unrivaled history at the world’s most historic track meet with both an individual athlete and a relay team among the Wall of Fame honorees. Distance runner Brian McElroy will be inducted onto the Wall of Fame for his accomplishments as both a scholastic runner and during his collegiate career. The women’s 1984 distance medley relay team of Mary Ellen McGowan, Veronica McIntosh, Patty Bradley and Lauren Searby will also be inducted.

Ville Lampinen Wins 800 Meters at Hurricane Alumni Invitational

It was a successful day for the Villanova sprinters on Saturday afternoon, as sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) won the 800 meters at the Hurricane Invitational to highlight a number of strong results for the Wildcats. Lampinen paced a field of two dozen runners in the 800 meters at Cobb Stadium. Villanova also tallied an eighth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay and a pair of top-eight finishes in the pole vault.

Ben Malone Places Fifth in 1500 Meters at Sam Howell Invitational

Junior middle distance runner Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) came in fifth out of 36 runners in the 1500 meters to lead Villanova during the second day of the Sam Howell Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet at Weaver Stadium on the Princeton campus wrapped up with the Wildcats tallying a total of four top-eight finishes for the day.

Six athletes were in competition for Villanova at the Sam Howell Invitational on Friday night, as the Wildcats kicked off a busy weekend of competition. Three races were on the schedule for the team at Weaver Stadium, with Villanova running in the 800 meters, the 1500 meters and the 5000 meters.

O’Mara, Wetzel, Marston and Malone Win 4x1500 at Colonial Relays

A winning lineup that consisted of sophomore Colin O’Mara (Little Rock, Ark.), redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.), redshirt freshman Andrew Marston (Wayne, Pa.) and junior Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) won the 4x1500 meter relay with a terrific race at the 52nd annual Berkeley Realty Colonial Relays at Zable Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Villanova’s winning relay team held off meet host William & Mary by nearly four seconds at the finish line.

Cartwright and Pierce Run Well for Wildcats at Colonial Relays

Senior sprinter Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and sophomore Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) were among the top performers for Villanova during a full day of action Friday at the 52nd annual Berkeley Realty Colonial Relays. The pair each recorded strong times in their respective events and the Wildcats had athletes entered into seven different events in all on a wet and cool day at Zable Stadium.

Power Records Personal Best Time in 3000 Meters at Colonial Relays

Redshirt freshman distance runner Paul Power (Phoenixville, Pa.) lowered his personal best in the 3000 meters on the opening night of the 52nd Annual Berkley Realty Colonial Relays on Thursday evening. He recorded a time of 8:42.92 in the 3000 meters at Zable Stadium and finished 13th in a field of 37 runners. His time eclipsed the previous top mark of 8:51.87 he had run indoors at the BIG EAST Championships just over a month ago.

Young Villanova Team Got its Start at Penn Challenge on Saturday

Villanova kicked off the outdoor season at the Penn Challenge on Saturday afternoon, where the team had entries in 13 different events and featured nine athletes who were competing for the team for the first time in an outdoor meet. Several personal bests and other strong performances highlighted the day at Franklin Field, including third place finishes in the 400 meter hurdles, the pole vault and the javelin.

Men’s Track & Field DMR Squad Earns First Team All-America Honors

Following their eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships last week, the Wildcats distance medley relay squad was named first team All-Americans by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday afternoon. Villanova had a lineup of junior Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom), sophomore Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland), sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) in the national championship race.

Wildcats Finish Eighth in Men’s DMR at NCAA Championships

Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) ran a strong anchor leg to help Villanova clinch a top-eight finish in the national championship race of the distance medley relay on Friday night. A lineup of junior Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom), sophomores Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland) and Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland), and Wetzel registered a time of 9:39.38 and came in eighth out of 12 teams at Gilliam Indoor Stadium on the first night of the NCAA Championships.

Slade and Wetzel Lead Wildcats with Multiple All-BIG EAST Honors

Junior middle distance runner Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom) and redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) each earned multiple All-BIG EAST honors as the league announced its full slate of all-conference honorees on Thursday evening. Slade and Wetzel were among 10 athletes from Villanova who combined for 15 top-three finishes at the BIG EAST Championships last weekend. Slade garnered All-BIG EAST recognition individually in the Mile, as well as for running a leg on the Wildcats conference champion 4x800 meter relay and distance medley relay. Wetzel also ran a leg of both winning relays.

Men’s Track & Field Distance Medley Relay Earns NCAA Bid

The list of accepted athletes and relay entries for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships was released late Tuesday night, and the men’s track & field team has earned a bid to the national meet in the distance medley relay. Villanova posted a qualifying time of 9:30.16 at the UCS Invitational on February 18 and is ranked seventh among the 12 relay teams accepted to the NCAA Championships. The national meet will be held on March 10-11 at Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas.

Men's Track & Field Wins 4x800 Relay, Finishes Fourth at BIG EAST Meet

In a relay that has typically been one of the team's strongest events, Villanova won the 4x800 meter relay on Saturday afternoon at the BIG EAST Championships and also had four athletes make the awards podium in their respective individual events as the team tallied a fourth place overall finish at the conference championships. Two days of competition at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex wound up with the Wildcats having a total of nine top-three finishes.
